2008-10-04 01:08:00
In my blog finds I highlight some of the best articles I’ve found online recently. You can see all my blog finds (courtesy of Google Reader) in the sidebar. It’s been a long while since I posted a Bobspotted Blogroll post.  With Google Reader, it’s easier to share my posts one by one.  Rather then ...
Vern Poythress on the Christocentricity of Scripture
2008-09-10 23:43:00
Dr. Vern Poythress of Westminster Seminary is an ardent advocate of Redemptive Historical interpretation.  He recently contributed History of Salvation notes for the forthcoming ESV Study Bible.  Crossway just released his article, Overview of the Bible: Survey of the History of Salvation, included at the front of the ESV Study Bible.  I’d encourage everyone to ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Conclusion
2008-07-17 17:47:00
Continuing from part 7…. At last, this series is coming to a close. We’ve explored an understanding of the land promise informed by NT Scripture itself. All believers are Abraham’s heirs, and they inherit the promise that he would be heir of the world (Rom. 4:13-16). Gentile believers can expect to “live long ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Part 7
2008-07-10 02:53:00
Continuing from part 6…. I hope this post concludes my arguments, responses, and all other considerations of the matter – warning: this is a lengthy post!   :) I plan to follow up with a concluding post which explains the ramifications for holding my position. Conditionality of the Land (follow up) Before I begin, let me share a passage which ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Part 6
2008-06-29 00:10:00
As is frequently the case, when publishing a series of posts on my blog, I encounter a lot of comments and counterpoints. This can sidetrack me and lead toward my leaving a series unfinished. Of course there are other reasons for my nack for leaving series unfinished…. I do want to interact with some of ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Excursus
2008-06-24 14:31:00
Before continuing with a couple points related more directly to the land promise, and then going on to finish this series, I thought it would be good to address an important side issue. In the comments of part 5, it was again stated that I am wrong for going backward from the New Testament ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Part 5 (Answering Objections)
2008-06-20 14:00:00
–continuing from part 4. I thought that the fifth post would be the last, but Will Dudding brought up some objections in the comments of the last post. This has caused me to dig a little deeper, and in the end has only increased my confidence in this understanding of the land promise. So ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Part 4
2008-06-11 13:48:00
–continuing from part 3. Here is a fourth, and most definitive basis for “spiritualizing” the land promise…. 4) The connection between land and rest To start, read these verses in Hebrews 4. Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. For ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Part 3
2008-06-10 13:00:00
–continuing from part 2. Justification for “Spiritualizing” the Land Promise Whenever one starts talking of “spiritualizing” a text, various wrong-headed assumptions abound. Dispensationalists often use this charge to show our disregard for the Biblical text. And sometimes, any honest effort to show metaphorical language in Scripture is met with suspicion — oh so you are ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Part 2
2008-06-04 15:42:00
–continuing from yesterday’s post. The Land Promise Fulfilled? But was the actual promise fulfilled?  Were the boundaries of the land promised in Gen. 15:18-21 ever completely owned by Israel?  The dispensationalists say no, and they point to history and the Biblical record of what land Israel possessed.  The Philistines and other groups remained in the land such ...
Understanding the Land Promise: Part 1
2008-06-03 20:00:00
Some of you probably know that I am a former dispensationlist. I have since embraced Covenant Theology, at least in a broad sense. One of the key factors in my change concerning this position centered on the promise of the land. In my experience, the promise concerning a land for Abraham’s descendants plays a ...
You?re Always The Liar
2008-05-07 22:44:00
So says Proverbs 30:5-6 when you find yourself at odds with God and His revelation. God says “DO this.” You say, “It’s not that big of a deal.” You’re the liar. Every time. God says “DON’T do this.” You say, “It’s not that big of a deal.” You’re the liar. Every time. Not much need to elaborate on that ...
Speaking the Word of God
2008-03-19 01:26:00
While studying hermeneutics today, the Doctrine of Inspiration in particular, I was profoundly struck with the weightiness of the reality of such a Doctrine.  I suppose, while whole-heartedly affirming the doctrine, that I fail often to have a simple awe for this idea: that God has spoken.  The omnipotent, omniscient, holy, creator God has spoken.  More ...
Guarding Truth
2008-03-17 12:08:00
Since beginning the study of Hermeneutics, one thing has struck me as extremely important.  In acquiring a brief overview of the history of Hermeneutics, it has appeared as a dire necessity for the truth to be guarded and protected.  It does not only need to be protected by us, but also from us.  While there ...
Theology 101
2008-02-20 19:59:00
My thanks go out to Alan at Real Christianity who pointed me to this site where one can pick up theology for free if you choose to study the course materials at your pace, or get a certificate for your effort if you pay the US$100 fee. It does look like my wife and I will ...
Puppets, Popoli & The Open Theism Debate
2007-11-24 14:55:00
I’m sure my astute readers are all up to speed on the open theism debate. Then again, some of you probably aren’t. And I haven’t really ever debated the issue, so I had to do some homework too. The Issue Open Theism is the belief that God is in a sense bound by time. ...
Shotgun Hermeneutics
2007-10-29 20:45:00
There is a tendency in many Christian circles to think that if a particular theological viewpoint can quote a lot of Scripture, it must be right. For example, in a recent book defending the Five Points of Calvinism (by David Steele and Curtis Thomas), the authors seem to think that if they just quote Scripture, ...
The Hermeneutics and Divisiveness of The Crossless Gospel Debate
2007-10-28 03:24:00
My writing of the article was not planned. In fact I was going to take the weekend off from my avocation as a minister of reconciliation. I have tried to stay out of the contention between “refined” FG and “traditional” FG proponents and those who accuse the former of a “crossless” gospel. ...
Ghamidi?s interpretation post - some afterthoughts about hermeneutics
2007-09-02 11:08:00
Don’t have much time these days to write at length. Still mulling over some really thought-provoking comments on my Ghamidi’s interpretation post. Is it a plausible conclusion that this fairly recent originalist attempt of fixing the ‘original intent’ of the revealed word can be seen as another tragedy to reduce Quran to the level of computer ...
Holy Hermeneutics!
2007-07-13 16:21:00
We seem to always use large, foreign rooted words from Latin or Greek to make even the most basic matter complex and highly intellectual. When I hear the term hermeneutics, I think of the campy Batman television series that was popular in the 1960’s. The Boy Wonder, aka Robin would often come up with such ...

The hermeneutics of jazz

Some nice discussion of theology and jazz at Per Caritatem and Robertson House Collection.
It's ok to hate the word 'hermeneutics'
2006-12-02 16:09:15
I have some friends who absolutely hate the word 'hermeneutics'. Whenever I say it they make vomiting faces or noises. Afterward they look at me as if worried that they have hurt my feelings, which makes me laugh because it doesn't bother me a bit. Well, Dana and Becca, this post is dedicated to you! :-) I'd bet that many of you either share this feeling with my friends or know someone who does. To be honest, sometimes even I share this sentiment. Here's what I think causes it: even though we accept on a surface level the implicit message of our evangelical culture that we should all strive to be a Dr. D. James Kennedy or a Josh McDowell, people who know what they believe and can tell you exactly why they believe it (at least that's the image), deep down we resent being forced into this mold and made to feel inferior when we don't quite fit it. We sense that there is nothing wrong with holding a belief and not being able to defend it (especially if we are content to keep our...
