Yankees DH-LF Hideki Matsui begins running program (AP)
2008-08-08 01:19:00 New York Yankees slugger Hideki Matsui began a running program Thursday for his sore left knee. After hitting 10 home runs on 58 pitches during his second consecutive day of batting practice on the field, Matsui ran about 90 feet six times in the outfield. “I was able to run and I didn’t have any ...

Yankee Hideki Matsui Collects Homeruns, Porn
2008-04-02 22:45:00 Our friends at Yard Barker did some research on the Japanese exchange baseball player Hideki Matsui, who currently plays for the New York Yankees. Apparently, the slugger, known as Godzilla, has quite the collection of porn. Who doesn’t, right? My favorite part is the way the media highlight this little hobby of Matsui’s. It’s always in ...

Around and Around We Go
2007-12-12 06:14:00 The "Around the Majors" section of Jon Heyman's CNNSI columns often operates as a haven for misinformation. Fully 1/3 of his latest bullet-pointed entries struck me as misleading and ill-informed, if not flat-out wrong:*The Yankees and Giants could possibly make a deal involving Hideki Matsui, one that involves either pitchers Noah Lowry or Jonathan Sanchez. But would anyone really expect Matsui to waive his no-trade clause to leave the team of his dreams?Yes. Absolutely. Matsui may like being a Yankee, but he also doesn't strike me as the type to stand in the way of a trade which both parties are eager to complete. It's also worth mentioning that many Japanese players have expressed a preference to play on the West Coast, which cuts almost half a day of off the round-trip flight to Japan. Matsui's approval isn't a sure thing, but it's certainly not ridiculous to expect him ultimately to accede to the wishes of the two teams involved. *Upon hearing that Eric Gagne got a guara...
MLB Rumors: Johan Santana, Erik Bedard, Hideki Matsui
2007-12-08 13:45:00 The baseball news is slow this Saturday morning with the two Minnesota papers showing nothing at 7:40 AM EST and the San Francisco ones dominated by Barry Bonds trial coverage. Only the Boston and New York ones have information up about Johan Santana, Erik Bedard and Hideki Matsui. Tom Massarotti at the Boston Herald writes the Boston Red Sox remain tight-lipped about any negotiations with the Twins over Johan Santana and do not appear willing to increase any of their offers to include two of the three marquee prospects - Jacoby Ellsbury, Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester. As long as the Red Sox do not budge from their position, other teams like the New York Mets and Yankees will continue to be rumored to be involved. This morning's NY Daily News leads one of its Yankees' article with this sentence:While Hank Steinbrenner acknowledges that he hasn't slammed the door on a potential blockbuster deal for Johan Santana... Granted beginning a sentence with "while" is th...

The Giants and Hideki Matsui
2007-12-07 20:21:00 As we learned earlier this week, the Giants and Yankees have talked about a Hideki Matsui trade. Let's discuss. According to Andrew Baggarly, talks are still in the early stages but the teams will meet again soon on the topic. A source close to Matsui indicated that he'd waive his no-trade for San Fran. However, the Giants are said to prefer adding a right-handed slugger. Baggarly thinks the Giants would readily part with Jonathan Sanchez and Brad Hennessey, with Noah Lowry a possibility. The Giants won't part with Brian Wilson, their closer of the future. Other notes from Baggarly - the Giants are over Miguel Tejada and were told Jay Bruce is untouchable. Pete Caldera says the Yankees like Lowry but considers a deal a long shot. Ed Price reports that Matsui's agent hasn't had a request about waiving the no-trade, and the agent won't comment on Matsui's willingness. Don't expect the Giants to acquire both Alex Rios and Matsui. Tim Lincecum...

Odds and Ends: Lowell, Sabathia, Polanco
2007-11-08 22:12:00 I'm going to start up a catch-all Odds and Ends post for smaller rumors and notes today. Refresh to see it grow. A reader emailed me to tell me that Buster Olney said on XM Radio recently that there are talks of the Twins going after Scott Rolen. These reports can be tough to confirm, but there you go. UPDATE: Joe Christensen squashes this one. Mark Feinsand doesn't think Epstein is keen on giving Mike Lowell even a three-year contract. He might get five on the open market. UPDATE: The Red Sox apparently have a three-year offer out to him, and he's still mulling it over. The White Sox inquired about Bill Hall, but Kenny Williams and Doug Melvin couldn't find a match. Baseball America weighs in on the Brad Lidge trade. BP's Nate Silver gives his opinion here and here. He thinks the Phillies made a mistake. The Astros have contacted Jeremy Affeldt's agent. Also, Jim Molony speculates in this piece that speedy Josh Anderson could be...

Yankees Look for Backup for Hideki Matsui
2007-04-09 13:29:00 With the major leagues flush with extraneous outfielders, it's a wonder the Yankees have been unable to consumate a deal for additional reserves to bolster a roster depleted by successive injuries first to Johnny Damon, then Hideki Matsui.Damon has tenuously returned to action following a sore calf, but Matsui finds himself on 15-day injured list following his second hamstring strain since last year, not to mention a broken wrist that kept him out from May to September. The Yankees exposure at the position has been underscored by the team's decision to recall outfielder Kevin Thompson from Scranton. Thompson's .300 batting average in limited action last year was good enough to knock Bubba Crosby off the roster, but he has yet to win manager Joe Torre's confidence. Robinson Cano's history of hamstring problems further exacerbates the team's thinness up and down the lineup.Scuttlebutt depicts General Manager Brian Cashman moving behind the scenes to acquire help from any number o...
