the 10 Types of Facebook Friends from High School
2011-03-29 16:32:00 Love it or hate it, Facebook is a great way to stay connected and reconnect with friends, colleagues, and high school friends. The random "where are they now" Facebook requests from former classmates in my inbox always ranks high on my procrastination list. Most of the time, I am pleased to reconnect with my former Play-doh eating, Lego-playing cohorts. But ... sometimes some friend requests leave me scratching my head. Um ... in the four years of being in the same homeroom class did we ever talk? Chances are this person found me through the "suggest a friend" button (thanks a lot Facebook) or by hijacking a mutual classmate's friend list (Face it--we've all done it). Oftentimes, these people generally are the...
Are high school trips to foreign countries safe?
2011-03-10 14:57:00 I went to Italy on a class trip when I was 15. On the first night, our teacher/chaperone allowed us to go out ... at night ... by ourselves ... in Rome. So, we did. And, we went to a bar. And, my two friends ordered beer (I didn't drink) and started talking to some Spanish boys (I only spoke Italian). So, I left. Yes, I left!! I walked back to the hotel ... at night ... by myself ... in Rome. How stupid, right?! I would've been safer at the bar. I'm reminded of this today because of the recent news on the man allegedly involved in Natalee Holloway's disappearance and I am grateful that ~1/ I made it back...

High school English teacher suspended over blog
2011-02-24 14:27:00 She wrote that her students were "rude, disengaged, lazy whiners. They curse, discuss drugs, talk back, argue for grades, complain about everything, fancy themselves entitled to whatever they desire and are just generally annoying."She's probably right (let's be honest). And, she's entitled to voice her opinion. But, uh, she might want to consider a career change. Just saying. This reminds me of my high school English teacher - I'll call her Mrs. Conner - who, with holes in her pantyhose and a fondness for carrot cake from the school cafeteria, would plop on her desk in front of our honors English class and say things such as:- The Belleville (New Jersey) school system 'sucks' (how articulate for an English teacher)- I...

High School Athletic Codes, Have They Gone Too Far - Opinion Poll

What's Going On At Bogan High School?
2010-11-28 18:04:00 When I posted a This American Life story about a petty tyrant in Schenectedy I wasn't thinking of anyone in CPS in particular. But readers and commenters quickly decided that Bogan principal Kenneth Mcneal was a top contender for top honors. Read what they have to say here, taking it all with a grain of salt as usual. Far as I can tell, McNeal came to the school three years ago -- according to Catalyst he's got a contract -- and at the time some readers thought he was headed in the right direction. Two possibilities that I can think of -- one is that he's doing a horrible job just like people are saying, another is that a small...

Update: Reconsidering Brooks High School
2010-10-08 01:12:00 Four years ago a post about Gwendolyn Brooks on this site generated a heated discussion about the opportunities and challenges of the South Side selective enrollment high school, which was at the time in the process of picking a new principal. Last week, the Chicago Defender published a piece about how the school is doing now (Students making the grade at Brooks high school) and a reader kindly sent it along suggesting an update. From the article: "Despite 87 percent of Brooks students coming from low-income households, 72 percent of students either met or exceeded state standards in reading, math and science, according to the 2009 School Report Card, while the average district school averaged 60 percent and the state...

High-school sweetheart, or sex offender?
2010-09-09 15:20:00 In Illinois, it's illegal for two people under the age of 17 to have sex, even if both consent. A conviction can include jail time and a hefty fine. It may seem extreme when you're talking about two willing 16-year-olds. Although it's probably enforced less in this situation, it does come up, especially in cases of teen pregnancy. In the example of two 16 year olds, the offense would be criminal sexual abuse. It's a misdemeanor. The punishment is up to a year in jail and up to a $2500 fine, although probation is an option. If the perpetrator is 5 years older than the victim, or older, it becomes aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which is a felony. So...

New Lakeview High School Athletic Code Supports Leadership As Deterrent

After revising their athletic code the school garnered the services of Dennis O'Sullivan (AAI Vice President for Professional and College Development) to help train approximately "50 of its top student-athletes" on what leadership is truly all about.
AUSL Takes Over New High School In Gage Park
2010-08-12 13:11:00 A concerned teacher writes in about the new Eric Solorio Academy High School on 54th/St. Louis: "The school was named orginally Ignacio Zaragoza and set to be a CPS neighborhood school. They hired a principal, Jorge Macias. The sometime in June we find out he had been fired In addition, AUSL took over and the name changed to Eric Solorio. According to the Board of Ed reports they did additional "community outreach" and decided to change the name. As a community member and speaking to many teachers who teach at local schools in the area, no one was asked about the name change. Zaragoza was decided on by the students of Irene C. Hernandez. The community is also not informed...
Illinois High School Fall Sports Coming: Are You Ready???
2010-08-10 14:00:00 As September approaches and summer comes to a close, many high school students have started preparing themselves for the upcoming school year. ACIDIC rocks the Whiskey-A-Go-Go--and our very own Mr. Media!
2010-07-03 19:44:00 By BOB ANDELMAN Every high school has a bunch of kids that will inevitably form a band. They?ll play a mix of cool songs they like and probably learn enough contemporary dance tunes to get booked at the gym for school functions. For many of their classmates, it will be the first time they ever see a band rock out, live, and every act they see thereafter will have to live up to that formative performance. -------------- LISTEN TO ACIDIC INTERVIEW! -------------- And, in truth, most of those bands will, honest and truly, suck in the real world. The musicians will think they?re hot stuff until they share a stage with more mature, more experienced acts. It?s all part of natural selection: that?s where there is only one Pearl Jam and a thousand Milli Vanillis. Which brings us to an L.A. sensation called ACIDIC. This is not your hippy grandmother?s high school pop band. These kids sound about a decade older than their actual age and experience level. They exude a ha...
