This is purely for educational purpose: Abstract After the conventional heat treatment to the M2 steel, there remains large amount of retained austenite (~30%) which is in soft phase and is not desirable to have better mechanical properties. But with the application of cryogenic treatment after conventional hardening, this retained austenite is minimized to approximately zero percent. This retained austenite is converted into martensite and tertiary carbides. Thus cryogenically treated M2 high speed tool steel shows microstructural changes, increase in wear resistance but no significant change in hardness than conventionally treated M2 steel that can influence tool lives and productivity significantly.
