Unfortunately, they won’t go after no-bid vendors or other white collar prostitutes fleecing the Bay area. Instead, commissioners target programs serving our children and abused animals. Because who cares about them? Last night, several hundred concerned residents showed they cared by turning out to speak before the Hillsborough County Commission and voice support for these threatened programs. The Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department hosts after-school programs for families of modest means who would otherwise have no options for child care. Over 3,500 youngsters all over Tampa Bay spend their youth in these parks; many of them work those same programs as teenagers and college students. 2008-05-20 22:29:00 The real estate market in Hillsborough NJ continues to improve. Activity in the various price ranges has changed in the past two months. In March, the middle price range, from $500,000 to 700,000, had a pending/active ratio of 15%. Currently, that price range's ratio has increased to 21%, still far short of a "balanced market" of 50%, but an improvement. Some of that growth was at the expense of the low middle ($300-500K), which dropped from 24% in March to 21% this month. The entry level (below $300K) continues at 26%, the strongest segment of the market. The upper middle, from $750,000 to $1,000,000, continues to stagnate; in March it was 7%, now 5%. In real numbers there were and still are 42 active listings in the price range; in March there were 3 pendings, now only 2. 2008-02-07 05:02:00 The Dukes of Hillsborough side of this record seems unfocused. It's sort of emo, sort of pop-punk, very late-era Bouncing Souls. There's not much bite to it, but it seems like their goal is to be more introspective and toned-down than to really put a lot of umph into their songs. Actually, their side of the record is really most dissapointing to me because it's one of those cases where I read the lyrics before I listened to the songs and got really excited, because there's a lot going lyrically, but the music fails to provide the right backdrop for it. The first of their two songs, "Spider Rico", is a great jab at the jaded "cool guy" complex in the whole punk/subcultural scene that's written in a serious tone, but succeeds in bringing a sense of humor to the subject ("I'd rather see the move that they emulate"). The second song, "Reinventing Axl Foley", is an obvious jab at Against Me!, and again provides insightful lyrics in a unique candor, but musically seems uninspired. T...

With available inventory of 252 homes on February 1, the 35 sales written in January were pretty good at a time when 80 new listings appeared on the market. February should be a better indicator of just how much recent rate cuts by the Federal Reserve may have helped.

In fact, there are 40 properties actively for sale in that range (out of a total of 265 active listings). The largest segment, however, is in the entry range of under $300,000, which constitutes 34% of all active listings and of all pendings. Overall, the pending to active ratio in Hillsborough is 17%, (anything less than 50% is a buyer's market), and it took an average 89 days for current pendings to go under contract. The softest segment of the Hillsborough market is the $1,000,000 plus homes, with 12 actives and just one pending. That one pending had a list price of $1,652,525. 2007-12-05 13:24:00 The Hillsborough real estate market in November saw a clear upturn as the supply/demand ratio reached its highest level in nearly two years. Just 45 listings were taken, but there were 35 sales made, for a 78% ratio. A certain amount of that is seasonal, as sellers decide to wait for the year-end holidays to be over, and buyers rush in to make certain they get into a new home by the end of the year. The absorption rate dipped as well, down to a 7.7 month supply. Average days on market for closed properties remained pretty solidly in the two and one-half month range, where it's been since June. Has the market in Hillsborough tipped toward the sellers' favor? We'll have to see some more evidence before a trend is clear, but with interest rates so low, it is clearly in the realm of possibility that buyers simply can't hold back any longer.

2007-09-27 14:05:00 The wine for the evening, served with my homemade pepperoni pizza, was a 2006 Hillsborough Serefina. We picked this bottle up at Hillsborough on our recent visit, it was my favorite Hillsborough offering that day.The wine checked in at 13% alcohol by volume and had a real cork closure.On the nose I found strawberry jolly rancher and watermelon. The wine smelled a bit sweet on the nose. However, in the mouth the wine was tart and much drier than I expected it to be. It showed strawberry and watermelon jello in a very nice balance.The wine paired fairly nicely with our pizza though I think I would love to drink it sitting on the porch on a hot summer day.

When a football band is playing at either school, I can hear it. I am waiting for the time when I hear them play at both schools at the same time, in essence a long distance battle of the bands. I bet this is the only part of Tampa where that occurs.

2006-12-29 10:38:02 The Seminole Heights Branch Library was recently advisedby the Fire Marshall that the maximum occupancy is 49. The problem has been is that the kids from the middle school across the street and to a lesser extent Hillsborough High school come over and flood the library, as a place to hang out until their parents pick them up or until it is time for them to walk home. At times there have been up to 90 people in the library. (Twice the allowed limit) Fights have erupted outside. The library has HCSO Deputy on duty at certain times. If the schools had some place for the kids to hang out it would help. Perhaps a computer lab open late. They don't.What we have is a problem created by the school system, that was being handled by the library system inadequately. The staff at Seminole Heights branch library have long time tried to deal with the issue. They try to control the kids who sometimes get unruly and hog up the computers. House of Hope was founded 4 years ago by then 77 year old Margaret Palmer. (Never too late to realize a dream) The Times had a write up in 2003 and the Trib had one today. Assistant Chief Jane Castor is on the board of directors."Palmer wanted something better for the women and began planning for it in 1998. She formulated the idea of having a big house with about 10 women, but Cal Henderson, then Hillsborough County sheriff, advised her differently.
