This is being done under its initiative ‘Health Speaks‘ to boost the amount of online medical information in local languages. Google announced that they are supporting pilot translation projects in Hindi as well as languages like Arabic and Swahili. They have directed that the volunteers can translate to these languages and publish them online on Wikipedia.There is also a donation incentive attached with this programme as every word translated by volunteers from english to hindi would lead to a small donation to the the Public Health Foundation of India, New Delhi. If things go well between the department of information technology of India (DIT) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN) you can expect these regional language domain names by early next year. The DIT will submit its proposal by next month to ICANN including IP address space assignments. Centre for Development of Advanced Computing – C-DAC and the DIT have already evolved a policy document for Internationalised Domain Names in Indian Languages over three years. The exercise turned out to be an amazing success. Soon after the website’s popularity spread like wildfire and today, Facebook is among the top three social networks in Spain. This exercise has now been carried out by Facebook in dozens of several languages with reasonable success. Creating vernacular versions of leading English portals seems to be mantra to gain market share in the non-English speaking countries. A lot of websites have tried it in India too. Facebook had tried its vernacularization strategy in India too.
