Hist 100-B-02, Summer 2008, George Mason University
2008-04-07 05:36:00 This course offers an overview of the history of Western Civilization. Rather than attempt to cover many centuries chronologically, however, it focuses on key themes in seven different units. These are Historical Thinking, Economic Thought and Practice, State-Building in Early Modern Europe, Religion and Society, The State and the Individual in Modern Europe, Imperialism, and War and Society. To help students come to terms with this history, the course emphasizes critical reading, critical thinking, writing, and civil discourse. I am still writing the syllabus for this course, but here is the reading list. You can obtain these books through the GMU bookstore or the History Survey bookstore that I have set up on Amazon. What's the worst case scenario for housing? Some say it's an epic and hist
2008-03-02 14:13:00 Have at it. What's the "oh dear god hide the children and head to the bunker" worst case scenario for housing? The Worst-Case Scenario for Housing - Forecasters say a 40 percent drop in home prices from their peak is possible, though quite unlikely"Our weaker scenario...is a 25 percent decline in prices," says Celia Chen, Moody's director of housing economics. "That would be in the case of a housing and credit crash and still a moderate recession." There are new worst-case whispers as well. "You want the darkest? Forty percent," she says. "There's your apocalypse."Lawrence Yun expects the economy and the housing market to recover in the second half as Federal Reserve interest rate cuts and the government stimulus kick in. "In terms of home sales activity," he says, "we may be scratching the bottom."

Evolution of Language: A Brief Study On Immigration Policy In American Hist
2008-01-31 13:28:00 One of the things I have been doing on my own to facilitate my study of public policy is that I have been reading and analyzing historic documents (from personal writings to written law) and picking out language (words, phrases) that define specific policy viewpoint from that era. In the case of immigration policy, the evolutionary trends that I discovered were pretty shocking, and a good measuring mechanism that could help determine the future of immigration policy. I think it came out pretty good-- "In the course of American history, the legal concept of immigration has evolved from an unlimited, unchecked practice to a regulated, enforced stipulation in the United States code of law. Funnily enough, the course of regulation has proved to be a rocky one, stymied by the controversial forms of illegal immigration that stand at the forefront of political debate and banter in our modern times. Though the legal perspective offers a progressively more regulated approach to immigration, ...

Greatest Performances in All-Star Game History
2007-06-29 15:32:00 With MLB's annual All-Star Game set to go on July 10 in San Francisco, it is a good time to look back and remember the greatest performances in All-Star Game history (In chronological order).- Carl Hubbell, 1934At the Polo Grounds, the N.Y. Giants pitcher threw 3 innings while allowing only 2 hits and no runs. He is best remembered in this game for striking out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx in succession.- Lou Gehrig, 1937In his final full season as a player, Gehrig went 2 for 4 with a double, a homerun and 4 RBI to help the American League to an 8-3 win.- Arky Vaughan, 1941The Pirates shortstop went 3 for 4 and hit 2 homeruns to go with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored at the 1941 game. His production was not enough however, as the N.L. lost to the A.L., 7 to 5.- Ted Williams, 1946Playing at his home park in Boston, Williams had what is arguably the greatest performance in All-Star Game History. He went 4 for 4 with 2 homeruns, 5 RBI and 4 runs scored. He set or tied records that s...
Comedian Richard Jeni's suicide: coroner's report indicates a history of m
2007-06-29 03:49:00 He was laughing on the outside, but crying on the inside. Ultimately, comedian Richard Jeni couldn't take the inner hopelessness any more and committed suicide in March at age 49. Now the coroner's report confirms that he had a history of mental illness and was hospitalized late last year for suicidal depression. I think this is a perfect example of someone perfectly masking his/her depression and yet know one in the public was aware of his serious mental despair. The incredible irony is that Jeni had appeared on The Tonight Show more than any other stand-up comedian, dating back to when the program was hosted by Johnny Carson. On March 10th, Jeni was found dead by his girlfriend with an apparent self-inflicted handgun (38 special) wound to the facial area. The coroner's report, released today, reported the following: Jeni, whose birth name was Richard John Colangelo, had not made any previous suicide attempts and left no note, the report said. However...

A suprise amongst the thistles
2007-06-27 21:37:00 I am not the world's greatest weeder - somehow it just all gets away from me and I am stuck at this time of year saying "just where did all those thistles come from?", "How can we have so much couch grass?", "What would actually exterminate creeping buttercup?"The garden goes from looking artily meadowish to being a great lump of unstoppable weeds (oh the garden club visiting in a fortnight will not be impressed). However one advantage is this - look a self sown orchid - it is only a common orchid, we have then down in the damp field, but it has sown itself in a patch of briza maxima grass and looks suitably exotic. This evening I have ordered our pigs - two piglets arrive a week today so tomorrow we shall have to get the patch of ground ready for them - the idea is that they will clear the ground so that we can plant willows and dogwoods in the autumn. I am very fond of pigs but shall have to remember not to get too fond of these ones
