Congress OKs historic bailout bill WASHINGTON (AP) - With the economy on the brink and elections looming, Congress approved an unprecedented $700 billion government bailout of the battered financial industry on Friday and sent it to President Bush for his certain signature. The final vote, 263-171 in the House, capped two weeks of tumult in Congress ...
Singapore Grand Prix: Historic and spectacular.
2008-09-27 17:05:00
Bernie Ecclestone isn't one of my all-time favorite person. The way he rules his Formula One circus can be debated on many fronts. But I have to admit today after watching the qualifying session that his daring idea of running a race under the spotlights during the night will be a total success once the weekend is over. The images coming from Singapore are simply spectacular and memorable. The lighting for the pilots is safe and adequate and is giving the fans something to cheer about. The city's infrastructure around the circuit is giving us some great pictures. The stands all around the circuit were filled to capacity for this qualifying session and a record television attendance is expected. The success of the event is undeniable. The experience will be repeated for next season. As for the qualifying session itself, Felipe Massa was once again the fastest of the group. His Ferrari was just over a half a second faster than Lewis Hamilton's McLaren. Hamilton almost missed Q3 when he...

Historic Housing Bill Signed
2008-07-30 18:21:00
The President this morning signed a historic housing bill "Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008." It is believed that this bill will help some 400,000 homeowners who cannot make their housing payments to be able to refinance their mortgages with FHA-backed loans. It will also permanently increase FHA, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac loan limits in high-cost areas.
Barack Obama | Germany | A Speech Historic - Text Of Speech
2008-07-24 20:20:00
Barack Obama in Germany., originally uploaded by fotowosch.Barack Obama | Berlin | A Speech Historic - Text Of SpeechI just finished watching what was both a moving moment and a moving speech by Senator and Presidential Candidate Barack Obama. But after this speech, I think Obama's unseated Former President Bill Clinton for the title of "President Of The World" and he hasn't even been elected yet.The moment was amazing: over 100,000 people in Berlin, most waving American Flags on a sunny summer evening where it felt like the World stopped for an hour to see the first African American leader give a speech at a place ripe with history.Conservative pundits wrongly observed that Obama was out of place. Indeed, he was very much in his place as the symbol of modern diversity and a one-person example of the oneness of the World itself. After today, I can't see how any reasonable American could not vote for Barack Obama. He's one person who's assended at the right time for America ...
Local Historic Designation - Hampton Terrace
2008-07-17 01:47:00
In the latest Creative Loafing there is a story about the "preservation vs. property rights in Seminole Heights" regarding the push for and fight against historic preservation in Hampton Terrace area. One comment struck me:""If the neighborhood truly wants this as a whole, we'll go along with that," Walsh says.""Warren interrupts: "Oh, not me. Nobody can force me. Even in a democracy, we have certain unalienable rights like property rights.""Hmm. So what exactly does that mean? I know that property rights are not absolute, hence zoning and code enforcement, and of course eminent domain.
The Historic Derawar Fort
2008-07-03 05:06:00
The historic Derawar Fort, enormous and impressive structure in the heart of Cholistan desert, is rapidly crumbling and if the immediate preventative measures are not taken, the edifice will be destroyed and the historians, researchers and sightseers deprived of the view of the legacy of the bygone era. Like so many other historic sites in the country, Derawar Fort is yet another sign of old times we are poised to loose forever due to the apathy of those who are responsible for its upkeep and preservation. Before it disappears, once again, I was on my way to Cholistan: the place that is crucible of one of the world's oldest civilization, where some of the past secrets are hidden, where history is still active.Derawar is the oldest fort and the only perennial water-hole in the area. But a visit to the Fort is painful for those locals or foreigners who value the heritage and other signs of past eras. They are disappointed with its fate and neglect of its wonders. Neither is it being m...
Historic 2nd Amendment Decision

Photo by Horizontal.Integration People are allowed to have handguns in their homes, if they aren’t disqualified from exercising their Second Amendment rights, holds the U.S. Supreme Court majority in District of Columbia v. Heller (PDF), 554 U.S. ___ (2008). In sum, we hold that the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of  immediate self-defense. Assuming that Heller is not disqualified from the exercise of Second Amendment rights, the District must permit him to register his handgun and must issue him a license to carry it in the home. The Court split between conservatives and liberals.  Justice Scalia delivered the Court’s opinion with Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Kennedy, Thomas, and Alito joining.  Justice Stevens filed a dissenting opinion and Justices Souter, Ginsurg, and Breyer joined.  Justice Breyer also filed a...

Berkman, Chipper Jones making historic runs
2008-06-10 15:06:00
Many have tried, few have come close, but nobody has done it since 1941. The Braves' Chipper Jones is the latest slugger to flirt with a .400 batting average. The last players to make a serious run at Ted Williams were Rockies first baseman Todd Helton and then Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra in 2000. Both finished the season at .372.In 58 games with 219 at-bats this season, Jones, who batted a career-high .337 last season, is sitting at .420. But he's not too optimistic about his chances. "I don't think I'll do it," Jones told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "It possibly could be done, because I've seen Ichiro (Suzuki) get 260 hits in a season. He is a guy who is going to leg out 50, 60, 70 hits a year. Those are hits I won't get."Jones hit .417 in May, but Houston's Lance Berkman actually topped that with an astounding .471 average last month.Berkman will have to keep besting Jones in that category if he wants to make his own run at history.  His .372 average, second to...

Obama: “The End Of One Historic Journey With The Beginning Of Another
2008-06-04 16:00:00
By- Suzie-Q @ 7:00 AM MST From: Carpetbagger Report Yes he did Posted June 4th, 2008 at 7:45 am It’s hard to overstate how exceedingly unlikely this was. When Barack Obama launched his presidential campaign in February 2007 — it seems like years ago — he was a candidate to be taken seriously, but hardly the likely nominee. Obama not only faced a popular former senator who was the VP candidate one cycle earlier, but was also launching a challenge against the overwhelming favorite — a popular senator with an impressive background, universal name recognition, and the best name in Democratic politics. If you took a poll in all 50 states the day Obama announced, he would have trailed in 49. Nationally, Obama started out with less money, fewer endorsements, less institutional support, and a smaller, less experienced staff. He started off trailing Hillary Clinton by about 20 points. By the late fall of 2007, it was about 25 points. He was too young. Too inexperienced. His name soun...

MSA BHRC round three: Severn Valley Historic Stages
2008-06-03 00:00:00
Starting with an 18-mile opening stage through Radnor forest, round three of the 2008 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Severn Valley Historic Stages (Saturday 31 May), was a great event with classic stages proving popular with the crews. Richard Hill/Pat Cooper pulled out a massive 24 second lead by the end of the first stage on their way to category three victory over Darren Moon/John McNichol, while the Porsche 911RS of Steve Smith/John Nichols took a commanding category two win. With Patrick Watts/Elgan Davies sliding their Sunbeam Tiger off the stage and out of the rally on the penultimate corner of Radnor, Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride took a dominant category one victory in their Porsche 911. Only eight of the 62 starters failed to make it back to the Builth Wells finish. Category 1 ?It was just so slippery, we were first on the road and cleaning the surface. The entrance to the penultimate bend was deceptive, I was too quick and it was either rol...

Historic Rally Car Register on show at Chatsworth
2008-05-31 00:00:00
The Historic Rally Car Register will be on show at the Rally Show at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire on 7/8 June, as 50 years of the British Rally Championship is celebrated with a star-studded line-up for rally legends and former BRC champions. The HRCR is the leading club for rallying in cars that typified the first two decades of the BRC story, and promotes a range of events for the type of cars that competed in the very first years of the BRC. In 1958, the inaugural BRC was won by the Triumph TR3A of Ron Gouldbourn and Stuart Turner and that type of car is still very active with the HRCR, competing on events that bring back the flavour of rallying in the late 1950s. Moving forward in the BRC story, through the 1960s and 1970s the championship was won by cars like the Mini Cooper, Lotus Cortina, Ford Escort Mk1 and Ford Escort Mk2, and those are the type of cars now thrilling fans in the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. "Anyone keen on the first 20 ye...
Book Review: Shift: Inside Nissan's Historic Revival
2008-05-30 02:07:00
This book is part bio and part Ghosn' own business methodology for turning around companies. It's applicable to the reader whether you are a CIO or if you are just the manager or leader of a small team. The basic methods of analyzing and measuring the problems are one and the same whatever the scale or issue. That's one reason why this is a worthwhile read. Ghosn' multi-cultural background is interesting and fairly unique in the international business world - but that was only one factor contributing to his success at Michelin and Renault. It provided him a unique and invaluable outsider’s perspective in companies that were (at least initially) very much closed to any other way of thinking. Those two companies were his training ground for the turnaround at Nissan he led. It’s well-written and an easy read. But it’s not a long book and some of the difficulties he went thru surely weren’t as easy as everything else he portrays. Unfortunately, it's also not t...

2008-05-22 00:00:00
The third round of the 2008 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship will take crews to Wales for the first time this year for some classic mid-Wales stages during the Severn Valley Historic Rally (Saturday 31 May). With two very long stages making up the meat of the 45 stage miles, it's going to be a challenging event for another excellent BHRC field. Category 1 As usual, the oldest cars in category one (pre '68) will run first on the road and a double victory on the Robin Hood and Pirelli rallies has been the perfect start to the year for Patrick Watts and Elgan Davies in their Sunbeam Tiger. They'll be going all out for a hat-trick in Wales and will start as clear favourites. Heading the Porsche challenge to the rumbling Tiger will be Dessie Nutt and Geraldine McBride in their familiar Porsche 911, but the long fast straights in Radnor should give the Tiger crew a flying start to the rally. However, as well as chasing the Tiger, Nutt/McBride will be working har...

Historic hotel for sale
2008-05-17 02:36:00
One of South Australia’s iconic hotels is for sale for the first time in more than 20 years. The Ozone Seafront Hotel, on the foreshore at Kingscote, on Kangaroo Island, was one of the original buildings in the town when the hotel was built in 1907. It was destroyed by fire in 1918 and rebuilt within the original stone walls, which survived the blaze. Renovations in the late 1990s discovered most of the hotel’s charred interior had been swept into the basement, which had served as workers’ quarters, and the base of the hotel was built on top. The current owners, who bought the hotel in 1987, believe it is time to move on and are looking for expressions of interest to take over the licence. Manager Chris Schumann, who has worked at the hotel for 19 years, said the Ozone had a large role in the island’s community. He said it was one of the major employers on the island, with 70 staff, a third of whom had worked at the hotel for more than a decade. The hotel was...

1001 Historic Sites You Must See Before You Die 1001 Historic Sites You Must See Before You Die is a giant compilation of photographs and short descriptions of great historic sites around the world. The book is close to a thousand pages long, weighs as much as - and sort of looks like - a brick, and was put out in collaboration with UNESCO.
