Lee Adler, historic preservationist, dies at 88 (AP)
2012-02-01 00:59:00
AP - Lee Adler II was never content with saving Savannah's historic homes and buildings one at a time. In 1959, he found a way to spare entire city blocks and neighborhoods from the wrecking ball that changed the way preservation groups did business — not just in Georgia, but across the nation.

2011-11-19 03:41:00
WASHINGTON- U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), Chairman of the House Republican Conference and Co-Chairman of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, issued the following statement today after a historic vote on a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.?Our national debt has topped $15 trillion. That is $128,000 for every household in America. The American people know that it?s because Washington spends too much, it?s not because they?re under taxed. If we try to tax our way out of this, we will be the most highly taxed nation in the world. That?s why the crisis has to be solved from the spending side.?The deficit is the symptom?it is spending that is the disease.?Many will say amending the Constitution is a very sacred responsibility, only to be undertaken with the greatest care and deliberation. I agree. But, let us recall the Founding Fathers provided an amendment process. No less than a Founding Father than Thomas Jefferson himself said, and I q...
Historic Homecoming for GLBT Alumni at Wheaton, an Evangelical College
2011-10-24 22:08:00
Wheaton College in Illinois has been called the Harvard of the evangelicals. Longtime readers of this blog may recall my reports from their theology conferences on the Trinity and spiritual formation. Though at one time I felt nourished by immersion in a community of serious Christian intellectuals, my shifting political sensibilities eventually made me too uncomfortable to return to an environment where non-heteronormative lives were (at best) erased.  That's why I was particularly happy to receive the latest Soulforce e-newsletter, which featured a report on OneWheaton, "a community of LGBTQ's and allies at Wheaton". This month, some 600 members took the bold step of attending Wheaton's homecoming weekend as openly queer alumni and allies. Here's an excerpt from the newsletter: "This is a real coming out, being here, being ourselves," said Frances Motiwalla, a 2000 Political Science graduate. "That's what this weekend is all about. This was a reassertion of our whole...

Historic S. Prairie Victorian Mansion Sells For $450,000
2011-06-16 01:57:00
I first wrote about this mansion at 2801 S Prairie in the Douglas neighborhood back in October. The price had just been lowered by a quarter of a million dollars to $599K. I had the unique opportunity of touring it one Saturday and found it to be an amazing home, though it needed a complete rehab. That previous post covers a lot of the history of the home and contains an extensive slide show. Well, on Friday it finally closed for $450,000, which I think is an exceptional price for this massive structure with a rich history. According to a story on Curbed Chicago the home was purchased by a New York doctor who intends to restore it to...

Northwestern Plays Entertaining Bowl Game in Historic Cotton Bowl Stadium
2011-01-02 20:08:00
Bowl games in the Pat Fitzgerald era have been like my experiences with women who sport "tramp stamps." Fun and exciting, but ultimately the outcome is rather negative. Three years, three games where the Wildcats entered as underdogs by more than a touchdown. And three losses by a narrow margin. They were just one possession, one play away from victory in all three instances. "Definitely hurts. Just knowing the last three bowl games have been kind of similar: up and down, up and down, and at the last minute the other teams pulls out the victory. Luckily, I'm a junior so I got another year, left so hopefully we take from this and work for a bowl win next...
Good-bye 2010: A Historic Year
2010-12-29 18:38:00
Unemployment is at record levels as job seekers continue looking for work.  Housing prices are down 30% of their value since 2008.  Govenment programs continue to increase the U.S. debt to record levels.  This is the story of 2010.   There are signs that our economy is slowly recovering.  The stock market rose 6% in December and shoppers packed the stores during the holidays resulting in an estimated 5.5% increase in sales over last year.  Yet, the national unemployment figure remains close to 10% as President Obama extended unemployment insurance benefits for another 13 months for many that were about to lose their benefits this December.   The housing market remaIns weak with more foreclosures on the way as banks...
Historic Victorian Landmark Mansion Back On The Market: $599,000
2010-12-19 14:33:00
Back in early October I wrote about this historic victorian landmark mansion at 2801 S Prairie that was for sale for $599,000. Shortly after that, on October 23, it went under contract for an undisclosed amount. By November 11 it went PENDING, which usually means that all the contingencies have been met and the parties are fairly confident that a closing will occur. Well, as of yesterday the listing was reactivated, and at the $599,000 price. The deal apparently fell through but I don't know why. I could call the agent to find out but then I'm not sure it would be appropriate for me to share that information here anyway so I'll just leave it a mystery for...

This Month in Real Estate – Interest Rates Hit Historic Low
2010-10-27 22:31:00
The housing market continues its slow recovery without the aid of the now expired tax credit. Sales are slower but growing, and prices remain on par with last year’s levels. Interest rates also hit a new historic low, a major factor in helping keep mortgage payments low, which is expected to spur sales. The economy shone a bit brighter in September. It grew faster during the second quarter than expected, and companies continued to hire. Experts believe there is now less risk of a double-dip recession. Now, the Federal Reserve Board’s challenge is not if the economy will grow but how fast. Driven by concerns that inflation is low, the Fed began purchasing treasury securities on a small scale. It used this tactic at the height of the recession to help draw down the interest rate and boost spending. Experts anticipate both the economy and the housing market will continue their path on the way to a complete recovery. This march back up provides excellent opportunities: an ample sele...

Cubs/White Sox historic pitching duel
2010-06-14 04:43:00
Ted Lilly battles the White Sox. (AP photo) This is baseball as it should be played. For six full innings, the scoreboard showed nothing but goose eggs. White Sox: no runs, no hits, no errors. Cubs: No runs, no hits, no errors. Lilly and Floyd both were magnificent. The last time two pitchers had twin no-hitters through the sixth inning was in 1917, right here in Wrigley Field. In that game, the Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds.Floyd lost his no-hitter on a hit by Soriano in the 7th and Lilly lost his in the 9th on a hit by Pierre. The Cubs hung on to win 1-to-0.Whoever won, this was a classic. The game had everything, except a home run, and...

Dold: Healthcare, an Historic Missed Opportunity
2010-03-25 03:52:00
From the Bob Dold for Congress campaign (10th District)... The healthcare bill recently passed by Congress and signed into law by the President is an historic missed opportunity that will adversely affect the 10th Congressional District and chill the creation of new jobs. While nobody disputes that healthcare reform is needed, this legislation is the by-product of a corrupt and partisan process that ignored the voices of job creators throughout our country. By more than a 2-to-1 margin, Americans have voiced their opposition to this bill. Unfortunately, their voices fell on the deaf ears of Congress. When presented with an opportunity to work together and craft reforms with consensus, the U.S. Congress chose politics over policy. I have always supported...
Take a Historic Walk Around the Gold Coast
2010-02-08 20:48:00
When I first moved to Chicago, I found that the best way to get to know my neighborhood and all that it had to offer was to walk around and explore the grounds.  It was a good way to get to know the hot spots and important places- (i.e. BYOB sushi, ice cream joints and places to get band-aids).  So, armed with a rough draft of a walking tour of the Gold Coast, I hit the streets to find the hidden gems, adding a few of my own as I roamed.  In the end, I realized that not only does the neighborhood offer some history (the Archbishop's quarters is right down the street from the original Playboy mansion), but it is also a great scenic running route for those dedicated to outdoor activities. ...

Historic Tour of Flanders, BHRC round seven
2009-09-23 18:48:00
While several leading crews focussed on the battle for the overall title, Steven Smith and Phil Spurge had no such concerns and duly won round seven of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Historic Tour of Flanders (11-13 September). The Porsche 911RS won category two, while Darren Moon and Chris Parsons had an impressive run in their Escort Mk2 to win category three. In category one, another victory for Dessie Nutt and Geraldine McBride (Porsche 911) sets up a championship cliff-hanger with David Stokes and Guy Weaver (Escort Mk1) for the final event of the season. Category 1 With championship scores uppermost in their minds, Nutt and McBride knew they had to be quick and safe, and that was the story of their rally. The Tuthill-tended Porsche 911 never missed a beat as they swept clear during a long tough Saturday leg in the lanes around Roeselare. In fact, the only real worry of the day was when one of Dessie's contact lenses slipped out of position ...

Ida B. Wells says goodbye to historic church
2009-08-18 21:22:00
Photo by Flowery LuzaNormally, I would describe myself as a bit of a goody-two-shoes. I asked my sister the other day how my mom and dad used to punish me when I was a little kid. "You know," she said, "I really can't ever remember you getting in trouble."Me neither. That's why I asked. In high school, I got in trouble once and only once. My friends and I put "Honk if you like Education" on the school marquee on a day we had a substitute. I didn't even get a detention. So it was a bit of a surprise to me on Saturday morning when I realized I was sort of a bad ass....

Architecture in Pakistan - Historic Overview
2009-02-18 16:56:00
Pervaiz Munir AlviMuslims first arrived in areas now constituting southern half of Pakistan, mostly Sindh and Balochistan in Eighth century A.D. when ships of Arab general Mohammad bin Qasim landed somewhere near the mouth of the Indus river and then traveled upriver all the way to the important city of Multan in lower Punjab. Thus bringing most of the commerce routes from the Indus valley to Mesopotamia through Balochistan and Persia under their control. The areas now constituting northern half of Pakistan, Punjab, Kashmir and Frontier did not come under the Muslim control till the beginning of the eleventh century when the armies of Sultan Mahmood of Gazna, present day Afghanistan, came down through the mountain passes demolishing temples and the statuary within, unfortunate enough to be in their way. The newcomers, along with a new religion, also introduced new forms of visual arts and architecture to this land and its people. Mosques and madrassas were built, Forts and Palaces w...
Historic Vermont Ski Jump Reopens
2009-02-12 02:30:00
Photo from Harris Hill Ski Jump Almost every year for the past 85 years, ski jumpers from around the world have converged on the village of Brattleboro Vermont to take part in the "original extreme sport."They will do so again this year on February 14 and 15 but the difference will be that the Harris Hill jump has been completely rebuilt. It's literally brand new and with luck it will last another 85 years. After the town got together and raised about half a million dollars, demolition and rebuilding continued through the last year. It was either that or lose what those in the ski jumping world consider an iconic structure in the sport. There are no others in New England and only six others in the USA of its size. Harris Hill was built by a visionary named Fred Harris who devoted a large portion of his life to building and maintaining the jump. The jump is just one mile from Exit 2 on I-91. Driving directions are on the website.(c) 2009 Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus Inn

A Historic Day? Sure, But What Kind of History?
2009-01-20 15:06:00
Every day… EVERY day… is history, once it has passed. Good or bad, different or indifferent, laughable, or lamentable, it’s all the same.  I offer that almost axiomatic point to those pointing to today’s inauguration as some kind of historical milestone.  I do so because it seems to me we’ve made it into some kind of hysterical milestone, instead. The whipped up hysteria is almost sickening both of itself and for the negative reaction that will occur once reality sets in.  Many of us seem fixated on the idea that we’ve elected the first black president in history. The question of that person being Barack Obama being a good or bad thing aside, it’s the issue of color I want to focus on for just a second, because I wonder if we’ve not sublimated positions on various issues of the day to the issue of Mr. Obama’s race. The feeling among many seems to be that Obama’s race is of greater import than what he will do with the o...

Three years.Ten million views.6,000 posts.Trillions lost.A world economy in shambles. And housing prices almost back to where we started.HousingPANIC ends. It's been a journey HP'ers, and an honor. When I started this blog, I knew how it would end up, I just didn't know how we'd get there. And now we know.I saw HP as a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end.
