Historic Tour of Flanders, BHRC round seven
2009-09-23 18:48:00
While several leading crews focussed on the battle for the overall title, Steven Smith and Phil Spurge had no such concerns and duly won round seven of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Historic Tour of Flanders (11-13 September). The Porsche 911RS won category two, while Darren Moon and Chris Parsons had an impressive run in their Escort Mk2 to win category three. In category one, another victory for Dessie Nutt and Geraldine McBride (Porsche 911) sets up a championship cliff-hanger with David Stokes and Guy Weaver (Escort Mk1) for the final event of the season. Category 1 With championship scores uppermost in their minds, Nutt and McBride knew they had to be quick and safe, and that was the story of their rally. The Tuthill-tended Porsche 911 never missed a beat as they swept clear during a long tough Saturday leg in the lanes around Roeselare. In fact, the only real worry of the day was when one of Dessie's contact lenses slipped out of position ...

Edinburgh is one of my very favourite European cities and that’s not just because I’m Scottish, so I was looking forward to reading and reviewing Andy Hayes’ Historic Walking Guides Edinbugh. As Andy says, Edinburgh is fairly compact so exploring the city on foot is a great option. Edinburgh skyline from Calton Hill by europealacarte The ...
Ida B. Wells says goodbye to historic church
2009-08-18 21:22:00
Photo by Flowery LuzaNormally, I would describe myself as a bit of a goody-two-shoes. I asked my sister the other day how my mom and dad used to punish me when I was a little kid. "You know," she said, "I really can't ever remember you getting in trouble."Me neither. That's why I asked. In high school, I got in trouble once and only once. My friends and I put "Honk if you like Education" on the school marquee on a day we had a substitute. I didn't even get a detention. So it was a bit of a surprise to me on Saturday morning when I realized I was sort of a bad ass....
If You Could Travel in Time, Which Historic Moments Would You Like to See?

In a conversation with ShakespearetheEngineer on his Moon Landing blog, I remarked what a tense yet exciting time it must've been for the Nation (or world, really). Hearing JFK's historic call to action for space exploration, and then witnessing the subsequent landing coverage was a totally new ex

Architecture in Pakistan - Historic Overview
2009-02-18 16:56:00
Pervaiz Munir AlviMuslims first arrived in areas now constituting southern half of Pakistan, mostly Sindh and Balochistan in Eighth century A.D. when ships of Arab general Mohammad bin Qasim landed somewhere near the mouth of the Indus river and then traveled upriver all the way to the important city of Multan in lower Punjab. Thus bringing most of the commerce routes from the Indus valley to Mesopotamia through Balochistan and Persia under their control. The areas now constituting northern half of Pakistan, Punjab, Kashmir and Frontier did not come under the Muslim control till the beginning of the eleventh century when the armies of Sultan Mahmood of Gazna, present day Afghanistan, came down through the mountain passes demolishing temples and the statuary within, unfortunate enough to be in their way. The newcomers, along with a new religion, also introduced new forms of visual arts and architecture to this land and its people. Mosques and madrassas were built, Forts and Palaces w...
Historic Vermont Ski Jump Reopens
2009-02-12 02:30:00
Photo from Harris Hill Ski Jump Almost every year for the past 85 years, ski jumpers from around the world have converged on the village of Brattleboro Vermont to take part in the "original extreme sport."They will do so again this year on February 14 and 15 but the difference will be that the Harris Hill jump has been completely rebuilt. It's literally brand new and with luck it will last another 85 years. After the town got together and raised about half a million dollars, demolition and rebuilding continued through the last year. It was either that or lose what those in the ski jumping world consider an iconic structure in the sport. There are no others in New England and only six others in the USA of its size. Harris Hill was built by a visionary named Fred Harris who devoted a large portion of his life to building and maintaining the jump. The jump is just one mile from Exit 2 on I-91. Driving directions are on the website.(c) 2009 Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus Inn

A Historic Day? Sure, But What Kind of History?
2009-01-20 15:06:00
Every day… EVERY day… is history, once it has passed. Good or bad, different or indifferent, laughable, or lamentable, it’s all the same.  I offer that almost axiomatic point to those pointing to today’s inauguration as some kind of historical milestone.  I do so because it seems to me we’ve made it into some kind of hysterical milestone, instead. The whipped up hysteria is almost sickening both of itself and for the negative reaction that will occur once reality sets in.  Many of us seem fixated on the idea that we’ve elected the first black president in history. The question of that person being Barack Obama being a good or bad thing aside, it’s the issue of color I want to focus on for just a second, because I wonder if we’ve not sublimated positions on various issues of the day to the issue of Mr. Obama’s race. The feeling among many seems to be that Obama’s race is of greater import than what he will do with the o...

"Annaly Capital (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=nly) (NYSE: NLY (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=nly)) is in the sweet spot," says Steve Sjuggerud (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2541) in Daily Wealth (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2541). He says, "It borrows at a low interest rate and invests at a higher rate -- and earns the 'spread'.""The cost of money is historically low, and it's headed lower. Meanwhile, relative to the cost of money, the return on money is higher than it's ever been. "The ultimate way trade on this historic discrepancy, for high-returns with very low risk, is through shares of companies like Annaly, which is now s now paying a 16% dividend. And there's an excellent chance that number could go up next quarter. "In the latest-reported quarter, the company borrowed money at 3.5%. Historic times: A look at market cycles
2008-10-23 06:00:00
Based on historical cycles, Sy Harding (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2494 ) moved out of stocks earlier this year, side-stepping most of the market decline. In Street Smart Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2494 ), he assses the market and economy. "Historic times? Oh yeah! The housing market is in the midst of its worst depression since the Great Depression. So far, the rescue plan that investors hoped would rescue the housing industry and not just the financial industry, has resulted in higher mortgage rates. "The financial system has been suffering its worst meltdown since the Great Depression. That has central banks around the world in obvious panic as the problems spread globally. Major banks, brokerage firms, and mortgage-lenders have already gone under. "The greatest consumer debt bubble in history is imploding, while the government takes on ever increasing debt itself in an effort to hold back the tide. Unfortunately those pro...

Step Back in Time with Historic Topographical Map of Los Gatos
2008-10-18 03:37:00
While trying to find an old map of Los Gatos online, I stumbled upon some interesting and historic topographical maps of San Jose, Los Gatos, Gilroy, Santa Clara, and other areas nearby care of the USGS. I will place a tiny segment of one here so that you can get the idea and visit the site yourself: My husband, Jim, loves maps and he tells me that each one of those "dots" visible on the map represents a house. Amazing! Another surprise, to me anyway, is that Kennedy Road looks like it used to be called Rinconada. Other, nearby parts of the map reveal that Camden Avenue was where the rail line used to run to the mines in Almaden and Guadalupe. Cool stuff - hope you enjoy it! http://bard.wr.usgs.gov/histori-cal/subindex/hist-sanjose.html#-NEW%20ALMADEN

Singapore Grand Prix: Historic and spectacular.
2008-09-27 17:05:00
Bernie Ecclestone isn't one of my all-time favorite person. The way he rules his Formula One circus can be debated on many fronts. But I have to admit today after watching the qualifying session that his daring idea of running a race under the spotlights during the night will be a total success once the weekend is over. The images coming from Singapore are simply spectacular and memorable. The lighting for the pilots is safe and adequate and is giving the fans something to cheer about. The city's infrastructure around the circuit is giving us some great pictures. The stands all around the circuit were filled to capacity for this qualifying session and a record television attendance is expected. The success of the event is undeniable. The experience will be repeated for next season. As for the qualifying session itself, Felipe Massa was once again the fastest of the group. His Ferrari was just over a half a second faster than Lewis Hamilton's McLaren. Hamilton almost missed Q3 when he...

The President this morning signed a historic housing bill "Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008." It will also permanently increase FHA, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac loan limits in high-cost areas.
Barack Obama | Germany | A Speech Historic - Text Of Speech
2008-07-24 20:20:00
Barack Obama in Germany., originally uploaded by fotowosch.Barack Obama | Berlin | A Speech Historic - Text Of SpeechI just finished watching what was both a moving moment and a moving speech by Senator and Presidential Candidate Barack Obama. But after this speech, I think Obama's unseated Former President Bill Clinton for the title of "President Of The World" and he hasn't even been elected yet.The moment was amazing: over 100,000 people in Berlin, most waving American Flags on a sunny summer evening where it felt like the World stopped for an hour to see the first African American leader give a speech at a place ripe with history.Conservative pundits wrongly observed that Obama was out of place. Indeed, he was very much in his place as the symbol of modern diversity and a one-person example of the oneness of the World itself. After today, I can't see how any reasonable American could not vote for Barack Obama. He's one person who's assended at the right time for America ...
Local Historic Designation - Hampton Terrace
2008-07-17 01:47:00
In the latest Creative Loafing there is a story about the "preservation vs. property rights in Seminole Heights" regarding the push for and fight against historic preservation in Hampton Terrace area. One comment struck me:""If the neighborhood truly wants this as a whole, we'll go along with that," Walsh says.""Warren interrupts: "Oh, not me. Nobody can force me. Even in a democracy, we have certain unalienable rights like property rights.""Hmm. So what exactly does that mean? I know that property rights are not absolute, hence zoning and code enforcement, and of course eminent domain.
The Historic Derawar Fort
2008-07-03 05:06:00
The historic Derawar Fort, enormous and impressive structure in the heart of Cholistan desert, is rapidly crumbling and if the immediate preventative measures are not taken, the edifice will be destroyed and the historians, researchers and sightseers deprived of the view of the legacy of the bygone era. Like so many other historic sites in the country, Derawar Fort is yet another sign of old times we are poised to loose forever due to the apathy of those who are responsible for its upkeep and preservation. Before it disappears, once again, I was on my way to Cholistan: the place that is crucible of one of the world's oldest civilization, where some of the past secrets are hidden, where history is still active.Derawar is the oldest fort and the only perennial water-hole in the area. But a visit to the Fort is painful for those locals or foreigners who value the heritage and other signs of past eras. They are disappointed with its fate and neglect of its wonders. Neither is it being m...
Historic 2nd Amendment Decision

Photo by Horizontal.Integration People are allowed to have handguns in their homes, if they aren’t disqualified from exercising their Second Amendment rights, holds the U.S. Supreme Court majority in District of Columbia v. Heller (PDF), 554 U.S. ___ (2008). In sum, we hold that the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of  immediate self-defense. Assuming that Heller is not disqualified from the exercise of Second Amendment rights, the District must permit him to register his handgun and must issue him a license to carry it in the home. The Court split between conservatives and liberals.  Justice Scalia delivered the Court’s opinion with Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Kennedy, Thomas, and Alito joining.  Justice Stevens filed a dissenting opinion and Justices Souter, Ginsurg, and Breyer joined.  Justice Breyer also filed a...

Berkman, Chipper Jones making historic runs
2008-06-10 15:06:00
Many have tried, few have come close, but nobody has done it since 1941. The Braves' Chipper Jones is the latest slugger to flirt with a .400 batting average. The last players to make a serious run at Ted Williams were Rockies first baseman Todd Helton and then Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra in 2000. Both finished the season at .372.In 58 games with 219 at-bats this season, Jones, who batted a career-high .337 last season, is sitting at .420. But he's not too optimistic about his chances. "I don't think I'll do it," Jones told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "It possibly could be done, because I've seen Ichiro (Suzuki) get 260 hits in a season. He is a guy who is going to leg out 50, 60, 70 hits a year. Those are hits I won't get."Jones hit .417 in May, but Houston's Lance Berkman actually topped that with an astounding .471 average last month.Berkman will have to keep besting Jones in that category if he wants to make his own run at history.  His .372 average, second to...

Obama: “The End Of One Historic Journey With The Beginning Of Another
2008-06-04 16:00:00
By- Suzie-Q @ 7:00 AM MST From: Carpetbagger Report Yes he did Posted June 4th, 2008 at 7:45 am It’s hard to overstate how exceedingly unlikely this was. When Barack Obama launched his presidential campaign in February 2007 — it seems like years ago — he was a candidate to be taken seriously, but hardly the likely nominee. Obama not only faced a popular former senator who was the VP candidate one cycle earlier, but was also launching a challenge against the overwhelming favorite — a popular senator with an impressive background, universal name recognition, and the best name in Democratic politics. If you took a poll in all 50 states the day Obama announced, he would have trailed in 49. Nationally, Obama started out with less money, fewer endorsements, less institutional support, and a smaller, less experienced staff. He started off trailing Hillary Clinton by about 20 points. By the late fall of 2007, it was about 25 points. He was too young. Too inexperienced. His name soun...
