Historical Photo of the Week: Lake Shore Drive, circa 1905
2012-01-25 17:26:00
Lincoln Park, 1905. Long before Lake Shore Drive was a bustling eight-lane expressway, it was just a wide unpaved path along the lake, where the wealthiest Chicagoans would go for an afternoon stroll or a scenic ride in their horse-drawn carriages. In fact, one of those affluent Chicagoans, the infamous Potter Palmer, convinced the city... Read more »

A historical thought on significance of Iowa caucuses
2012-01-04 03:50:00
In 1980, George H.W. Bush edged out Ronald Reagan in the Iowa caucuses 32% to 30%.  He lost the nomination to Reagan. Eight years later, after serving seven years as Reagan’s Vice President, H.W. finished third with 19% of the vote behind Bob Dole who snagged 37% of the vote and Pat Robertson who snagged ...
New Yorker Cartoon Exposes Bias & Not Historical Realities
2011-12-24 15:32:00
It has been observed that often a picture is worth a thousand words.  By this, it is meant that often a witty image can more quickly convey an idea than a written exposition. Another truism nearly as classic insists that the only thing we learn from history is that we don’t learn anything from history. A prime ...

L.A. Times Tim Rutten, Historical Idiot
2011-06-03 19:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Tim Rutten is a left-wing, hack writer from L.A. He is always good for contemporary left wing trope but the other day we discovered that he is also good for the sort of uninformed blathering that leftists of his ilk pretend is American history. Chiefly that of America's religious history and the so-called "wall of separation between church and state." In a June 1 piece about Mitt Romney, Rutten regaled us with his "reading" of Mitt's current political reality. Rutten proposed that any question about Mitt's Mormonism was somehow a threat to the United States. Before I get to Rutten's warped take on U.S. history, let's take this business about the attacks on Mitt's Mormonism....

Sathya Sai Baba can be documented by any conscientious reader as having made contradictory statements and egregious historical and scientific blunders. Spend a Day at the Cibuco Historical Center in Corozal
2011-04-11 00:00:00
I love it when you explore some place new and you are happily surprised with the outcome. That is what happened to us on a recent visit to the Centro Histórico Turístico del Cibuco (Cibuco Historical Tourist Center) in Corozal. We had heard that they offered a tour of this park, but we had no idea what a gem this place was. There is something for every family member packed into this lovely place, where you can spend a couple hours or the whole day.Continue reading this article → Spend a Day at the Cibuco Historical Center in Corozal Are you on Facebook? Illini Tourney Win is Nice, but Beating #1 Seed Kansas would be Historical
2011-03-19 20:50:00
The #1 seeded Kansas Jayhawks, led by the Morris twins, will give Illinois a tremdendous challenge. The Illini have only beaten one higher seed in program history- 2004; and it was just a #5 over a #4, the Cincinnati Bearcats. The old MTV reality show "The Newlyweds," captured this moment as Nick Lachey was a huge Bearcats fan, and one episode showcased his disgust as he watched the Illini slaughter Cincy by 30 that day. And it was a similarly convincing NCAA Tournament win for the Illinois Fighting Illini last night. They destroyed UNLV, and former Illinois Coach Lon Kruger in game that was much more lopsided than the final box score indicates. And it was their first Tournament...
Notre Dame Senior Night Saw Historical Shooting Performance (Video)
2011-03-03 02:28:00
Tim Abromaitis hit a career-high nine 3-pointers and he and Hansbrough scored 30 points each as the eighth-ranked Irish routed No. 19 Villanova 93-72 on Monday night. The victory ensured a double bye in the Big East tournament for Notre Dame and wrapped up a 17-0 season at home, the only Big East team to go unbeaten on its home court this season. Abromaitis' nine 3-pointers were one shy of the school record set by Kyle McAlarney against North Carolina in 2008. Notre Dame (24-5, 13-4) finished 20 for 32 on 3-pointers. The Irish, shooting 37.7 percent from 3-point range this season, were 11 for 19 in the first half, including 4 of 6 from Hansbrough, to build a...
Historical use of Spikenard
2011-02-01 05:25:00
from wikipedia. my memo. Historical use of Spikenard The oil was known in ancient times and was part of the Ayurvedic herbal tradition of India. It was obtained as a luxury in ancient Egypt, the Near East, and Rome, where it was the main ingredient of the perfume nardinum. Nard was used to perfume the body of Patroklos by Achilles in Book 18 of Homer’s Iliad. Pliny’s Natural History lists twelve species of “nard”, identifiable with varying assurance, in a range from lavender stoechas and tuberous valerian to true nard (in modern terms Nardostachys jatamansi). Nard is mentioned a number of times in the Old Testament. It was used as one of the Eleven Herbs for the Incense in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. And it is mentioned twice in the biblical love poem, the Song of Solomon (1:12 and 4:13). In the New Testament John 12:1-10, six days before the passover Jesus arrives in Bethany. In Bethany, Mary, sister of Lazarus uses a pound of pure nard to anoint Jesus&rsq...

Rogers Park Tales Historical Tidbit
2010-11-04 05:06:00
One of my neighbors told me today this Rogers Park north of Howard Street community was created on practical grounds. Evanston didn't want to have to run its sewer lines under the Calvary Cemetery, so the city ceded this little parcel of land to Chicago in 1915. What used to be called "No-Man's Land," according to the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society became Germania. The north of Howard Street section of Rogers Park was part of Evanston, IL, until 1915. Seth MacFarlane: Historical Illiterate
2010-05-05 19:54:00
-By Warner Todd Huston "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane proves once again that while the denizens of Hollywood might be good at acting, or singing, or TV and movie making, they most certainly have no clue about history or contemporary politics. They are utterly illiterate about the world around them because of the insular bubble in which they live. In a recent interview reported by Reuters, the insufferable MacFarlane proves himself to be el stupido on the recent Arizona illegal immigrant law. Now, one isn't necessarily illiterate to oppose the new law essentially forced upon Arizona due to the utter failure of the federal government to properly deal with the illegal immigration problem, a problem that we've suffered under in...

Dallas Historical Mortgage Rates - How low will they go?
2009-12-23 13:01:00
Historical Interest Rates Every month the Collin County Realtors Association publishes various reports.  You can find the monthly indicators by area on the right sidebar if your interested in seeing sales results.  Below is a historical chart for the Dallas area on mortgage rates. A full point lower from a year ago.  It means you can by more house if you can pass the more than strict lending standards of today. Interesting to see where we've been the past 6 years.  Do you think it will go higher or lower next 60 days or so...?
China's Rio Tinto Arrests. A Rapid Fire Historical Perspective.
2009-08-19 19:22:00
Sometimes big events can be so complicated, controversial and unwieldy, there is hardly any point in reading current reports because they are likely to be so biased and/or inaccurate as to be of no value. In those instances, particularly when the underlying topic is not of huge interest to me, I generally pretty much stop reading articles on it and just wait for the dust to settle. I think the common wisdom is that real dust settling (and releasing of key documents) and gaining of perspective usually takes around 50 years. And though I would love to be able to look at China's recent Rio Tinto arrests from the perspective of fifty years hence, that is obviously not possible right now. So instead, I will turn to an excellent FT.com by Arthur Kroeber, somewhat mis-titled, "Rio Tinto arrests reveal China has growing-up to do." The thrust of the article is that China is a relatively safe place in which to do business, particularly as compared to Russia. I agree. China has done...

Consumerism: an Historical Perspective
2009-04-26 18:54:00
by Sharon Beder21 February 2009The Pacific Ecologist, whence this article came, provided this editorial note: Sharon Beder explores the history of consumer societies from the 1920s when over-production of goods exceeded demand. Instead of stabilising the economy, reducing working hours, and sharing work around, which would have brought more leisure time for all, industrialists decided to expand markets by promoting consumerism to the working classes. The social decision to produce unlimited quantities of goods rather than leisure, nurtured wastefulness, obsolescence, and inefficiency and created the foundation for our modern consumer culture. People were trained to be both workers and consumers in a culture of work and spend.Consumption was promoted through advertising as a "democracy of goods" and used to pacify political unrest among workers. With the help of marketers and advertisers exploiting the idea of consumer goods as status symbols, workers were manipulated into being avar...
