Concussions, Violence in Hockey, Oh My!
2012-02-07 19:33:00
Perhaps no other sport breeds toughness and togetherness like the sport of hockey. A grueling 82-game schedule with four lengthy playoff rounds make teammates brothers. They eat together, shower together, fight for each other, play pranks on each other and, oh yeah, play hockey too. And, if the

Fantasy Hockey 2011 - Super Sleepers
2012-01-06 18:39:00
Jason Demers goes on streaks. 3 points in 3 games is no exception. San Jose is a dangerous offensive unit, with Demers averaging nearly 17 minutes a game and playing on the 2nd PP unit, he's worth a look. The Buffalo Sabres have a lot of injuries on the back end, letting Brayden McNabb get a good look playing big minutes. He hasn't disappointed. An offensive blueliner may not stay up in the NHL all year once healthy Sabres return, but he's definitely worth noting. Speaking of returning Sabres, Jochen Hecht is healthy again and has been inserted into the number one line in Buffalo in between Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville. If you are looking for immediate points, look no further. He's been mentioned before by myself in previous weeks, but Drayson Bowman is someone you should take note of. The Hurricanes don't look like they will be a fixture in a playoff race thus continuing the rebuild in Raleigh. Look for a few veterans to be moved, while Drayson continues to climb the dep...

Statement from Howard Baldwin, Jr. Regarding Hartford Hockey
2011-12-02 20:56:00
HARTFORD, December 2, 2011:  Since returning to Connecticut in 2010, we here at Whalers Sports & Entertainment have worked tirelessly, and accomplished much, in our goal of returning Hartford to preeminence as a hockey market. We put on a Whaler Fan Fest two summers ago that delighted 5,000 Whaler enthusiasts, with a celebration of the great Whaler tradition.  We took over the operations of the market?s AHL franchise and re-branded it with a new identity, leading to a significant increase in the franchise?s revenues.  We expended tremendous amounts of capital and resources in a landmark outdoor hockey festival, which culminated in the first professional outdoor hockey game in Connecticut, the Harvest-Properties.com Whale Bowl this past February.  And just last month, we outlined and articulated a vision for renovating the XL Center and re-energizing it as a catalyst for downtown activity and atmosphere. We will continue to leave no stone unturned in our quest...

Karma Finds Hockey Players 4 Kids Members
2011-05-04 03:47:00
When Dustin Sproat first created Hockey Players for Kids, his main mission was to help children and to give back to the community. Little did he know that he and other active members of HP4K would benefit so much from the good karma that surrounds the organization. James Allen once said about the Law of Attraction that, "A man sooner or later discovers that he is the master-gardener of his soul, the director of his life."  The lives of those involved with HP4K have been going pretty well. Many of HP4K's most active members have seen championships, newly signed NHL contracts, NHL play and NHL points, even in the post season.  Many other members have seen big strides in...
Hockey - Two Perspectives - Hey GCI, there's a hockey team in town; He
2011-04-18 03:13:00
We both love the Blackhawks.  In writing for both of us here, I (the husband) can safely say that we will go to any game we can at the United Center and that while the playoffs are going on, the television is tuned to the game no matter what.  In fact, I'm one of those people who will say in a conversation, "I remember going to the Hawks games with my father and uncle at the Old Chicago Stadium when ... [insert any common reference to cigarette smoke, swearing, drinking, etc.] was commonplace." There is nothing like the energy before the game while the teams are warming up and then during the national anthem.  There is also nothing like the tension...

Fights Must Stay In Hockey For Good Of The Sport....
2011-03-04 19:18:00
Evolution affects everything including sports.  Remember when dunks were not allowed and steroids were not technically illegal in baseball? How about the three point line in the NBA and football was played with leather helmets.  Sports are like everything else in life, they change with the times.  Although change is not always welcomed and many people fear it, most of the time through change the product becomes better.        For generations fighting in the sport of hockey has been a hot topic of discussion when it comes the sport evolving.  More than any of the four major sports, hockey has seen more change since its inception in the early 19th century.  Remember when goalies used not to wear...
Sad Day for Hockey in Rockford
2011-02-10 04:21:00
As the headline states, today was a sad day for hockey in Rockford.  The first reason is the fact that the IceHogs only put up one goal, scored by Jeff Taffe.  The goal was the first of the game and put the IceHogs ahead 1-0.  However as the game went on the Hogs were unable to execute their opportunities and the Hogs fell to the Aeros 4-1.The positive here, is that Taffe is on a 5 game point streak. The second reason for the sad day, at least for me, was the trading of  IceHogs' Hugh Jessiman.  Jessiman along with Jack Skille and David Pacan were traded to the Florida Panthers for forward Michael Frolik and goaltender Alexander Salak. I knew...

The Hockey Lingo
2011-02-08 05:46:00
As many of you know I live a busy life as a starving sports journalist and (about to graduate) college student.  From working this season with the Rockford IceHogs, I've learned the language of hockey along the way. For those of you who are big fans of the game, I thought you would like to learn how to talk like your favorite players. Here are some hockey terms.1.) Chirp (verb)- meaning to make fun of or joke around with or to talk trash.  Example: "There was a lot of chirping on the ice."  Chirping happens a lot of the time before fights. 2.) Rattled (adj)- Feeling of anger.  Sometimes used by fighters.  Ex: "Coach was really rattled about the game tonight."3.) Beauty...

The women appeared to be having a fun time during their version of a line brawl. The Rockford Hot Wings put on a exhibition game at the 1st intermission during the Rockford IceHogs game January 22, 2011 at the Metro Centre. The Hot Wing are a amateur women's hockey team associated with the Women's Central Hockey League. Their home games are played at the Riverview Ice House in Rockford. While no goals were made during the short game, they did put on quite a show with several fights.  ...

Red Wings Take Hockey Portion of Michigan-Ohio Rivalry Weekend
2010-11-27 18:46:00
Assuming that it was planned and not just coincidence, "Michigan-Ohio Sports Rivalry Weekend" is a very clever and exceedingly marketable idea. I'm referring of course to the Detroit Red Wings visiting the Columbus Blue Jackets on the eve of THE GAME (Michigan Wolverines vs. Ohio State Buckeyes) at "The Horsehoe" of college football. The only similar set u coming to mind is the annual November clash Florida St. and Florida used to have, where the college basketball teams play each other on Friday night and college football on Saturday. Of course, given the varying schedules of the leagues involved, it would be hard to pull this off every year. The Wings took the NHL portion of the doubleheader, a critical...
A Hundred Grand in the Big House — for Hockey!
2010-10-19 23:16:00
It’s not news when 100,000-plus pack into the Big House on an autumn Saturday on the campus of the University of Michigan — that’s standard support for Wolverine football. But this December 11 Michigan will face arch rival Michigan State in hockey there, and 105, 585 tickets have already been sold! Obviously, that would be a world record crowd for a hockey game — on any level. College hockey has gotten into the outdoor fun in recent years. Wisconsin defeated Ohio State 4-2 in the first-ever hockey game played at Lambeau Field back in February of 2006, with Hershey Bears’ forward Andrew Joudrey scoring in the game. Beantown puck rivals Boston University and Boston College faced off at Fenway Park this past January a week after the Winter Classic between Philly and the Bruins. But college hockey — heck, any level of hockey — has no precedent for what’s coming its way this December in Ann Arbor. ©2010 On Frozen Blog. All Rights Reser...
Easy Night of Hockey for the Manitoba Moose
2010-10-10 04:53:00
The Rockford IceHogs took a bit of a beating in their season opener, losing 5-2 to Peoria.  The first two periods were scoreless for the hogs and Moose were leading 4-0.However, the Hogs came out strong in the third, putting two on the board.  Brandon Bollig had the first goal of the season and Kyle Beach had the second goal of the game.  The Manitoba Moose's goalie had no chance saving the puck off of Beach's perfectly elevated shot. All though the Hogs played a strong third period, they were lacking in a couple areas.Powerplay opportunities were there (three I believe) and the Hogs went scoreless on it.  Something we need to improve on there.Penalty kill is the next one.  The...

Hockey is here again! A Blackhawks training camp preview
2010-09-17 02:23:00
Can you believe it's hockey season again?  The Blackhawks are hosting their training camp festival this weekend, including a STANDING ROOM ONLY practice.  Yes...a standing room only practice.Typically, elite NHL teams don't worry too much about preseason hockey, but with so many spots available on the roster, Preseason 2010 is a big deal for the Blackhawks and many of their players.  There are a few guys with guaranteed roster spots.  Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, Troy Brouwer, Dave Bolland, Bryan Bickell and Tomas Kopecky are pretty much guaranteed forward spots on the opening night roster. On the blue line, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and Brian Campbell make up a very stong top four. The goaltending tandem...
The Hockey Jersey Mystery
2010-09-01 03:03:00
I loved me some Hardy Boys when I was a kid, despite the Boulder Public Library's refusal to stock the books (oddly enough, they did have "The Ghost of the Hardy Boys" -- the memoirs of Leslie Macfarlane, a frequent contributor to the Hardy legend -- but only in a secret back room where you had to ask nice). I think the library's refusal was based on literary quality, but I got my hands on 'em anyway and read them avidly. I even, at one point, tried my hand at writing my own. "The Hardy Boys and the Graveyard Mystery" (because I liked spooky stuff) and "The Hardy Boys and the Mystery of the Emerald Guitar" (because I liked emeralds and I liked guitars. And, for that matter, mysteries). "The Graveyard Mystery" was actually performed as a play at Heatherwood Elementary, providing the high point of my literary career so far. Now, it might be time for my third, because I've got a puzzler suitable for Frank and Joe (and Chet and Biff): The Mystery of the Milwaukee Admirals Jersey That...

Jeremy Roenick Entering US Hockey Hall of Fame
2010-07-22 22:54:00
On Thursday, the US Hockey Hall of Fame announced the Class of 2010, and front and center is former Blackhawks' superstar Jeremy Roenick. The thought of celebrating Roenick's career got the wheels turning... so many memories, so many great highlights, such an ugly divorce. What do you remember most about the Jeremy Roenick Era of the Chicago Blackhawks? Roenick was drafted eighth overall in 1988 and climbed to the NHL level late that season. He pitched in 18 points in 20 games and was effective in the playoffs his rookie season. Roenick's first full season in the NHL, 1989-90, saw him score 26 goals and 40 assists as the Blackhawks improved 22 points in the standings. He was starting to...
Turning a warehouse into a hockey rink: Creativity is the key in today&apos
2010-06-15 01:25:00
For my day job as editor of Midwest Real Estate News I recently wrote a story about a construction company in St. Louis turning an office/warehouse building into an ice hockey rink. The company, ARCO Construction, rented out about 30,000 square feet of their facility to a youth hockey team. Of course, this being a terrible commercial real estate market, the company still has about 18,000 square feet to lease.Still, having 30,000 square feet off the books is a nice feeling.John Komlos, who is a vice president with ARCO, told me that his company never would have considered the hockey rink idea if the economy and the commercial real estate market were better. That's because transforming the space into a...
The Blackhawks are Kings of the Hockey World
2010-06-10 07:12:00
What a tremendous moment to see the Stanley Cup handed to Jonathan Toews by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and the wild celebration that ensued moments later. In my lifetime I have seen several championships. The 1985 Bears, the 6 titles won by Michael Jordan and the Bulls, the 2005 White Sox who won the World Series, and even the 1982 Chicago Sting who claimed the NASL soccer title. Now all that is left is for the Cubs to end more than a century of futility and finally win a World Series. That is a topic for another day. Now let's celebrate the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks who are the NHL Champions....
Ice Hockey Meets Icewine
2010-06-08 15:46:00
While I'm a huge sports fan, I have to admit that I've never been into hockey.  Maybe it's because my beloved Cubs are struggling or college basketball season ended two months ago or the way Chicago has embraced the Blackhawks during their playoff run, but I'm really starting to enjoy the sport. With the Hawks being the toast of the town, I decided to find a wine to toast them with.  What better to go with ice hockey than Canadian Icewine?  Icewine (or Eiswein, as it's called in Germany) is made from grapes that were allowed to stay on the vine until freezing temperatures set in.  They are then harvested and pressed while still frozen.  This concentrates the sugar and produces...
Hawks, hockey fans deserve better than Pierre McGuire
2010-06-01 21:08:00
Before I begin my rip session, let me say a kind word or two about TSN and NBC's Pierre McGuire.  As hockey insiders go, he's one of the best.  Aside from TSN's Bob McKenzie, McGuire is as good as anyone when it comes to trade rumors and behind the scenes knowledge.  With that said, I never want to see him on NBC again.I've never been one to get in to the whole "East Coast Bias" thing that a lot of midwest and west coast fans feel and talk about.  I just don't think it that big of a deal.  It's where most announcers are from, so the bias is natural.Pierre McGuire  My beef with McGuire is different.  It has nothing...
New to hockey: 10 things to know

Kodoka, SD--- There are a number of things for the perspective late-coming bandwagon climbing hockey fan to know so they don't stand out, looking like a baseball fan, or god forbid, a football fan climbing aboard the Blackhawks bandwagon. When you purchase your brand new Blackhawks sweater do not tuck it in. Only VERY good looking women can tuck a sweater in. For everyone else, this is a faux pas of the highest rank, marking you as a person without any hockey knowledge. They are sweaters, they are not generally called jerseys. And there have been no-nothing sports columnist who have listed rules of wearing hockey sweaters. Ignore them. 8 Reasons I Love Blackhawk Stanley Cup Hockey

The Blackhawks Hockey Bandwagon: Chicago's Most-Crowded Ride

Why I enjoy watching hockey and the Blackhaws
2010-05-07 20:20:00
So, I was thinking to myself today why I liked to watch hockey so much. Why I don't get all weird like I do with baseball--watching baseball I do things like analyze the game, get frustrated with poor play and say things like, "that pitch was the dumbest effing thing ever." Then I realized why. I never played/coached hockey.

Olympic Ice Hockey Won't Fix NHL's Overall Problem.....
2010-02-25 23:32:00
The biggest question to come out of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics is if the public will latch onto any of these sports after the games in British Columbia is over.  Millions upon millions of people have been glued to their televisions over the past two weeks where the Olympics viewership number is up by over 14% compared to the 2006 games.  Everything from downhill skiing to skeleton competition, droves of   Americans have seemed to find a new destination to go to every night for entertainment.  However when talking about the aftermath of these games, what sticks in the collective minds of the American television audience?  Since most of these events aren't broadcast on television anyway, the main sport that has...

UPDATE: USA scores on a great wrap-around in front of the Swiss goalORIGINAL POST: Is no one on ChicagoNow live blogging the game between Switzerland and TeamUSA? It's the end of the second period and it's a tieless score. Wait. Wait! It's seconds to go. No, fractions of a second. An American shot hits the Swiss goalie. It bounces off his shoulder! It dribbles across the line into the goal. Goal! No, wait. The replay shows that the goal is scored just a tenth of a second too late! Goal denied! As I started to say, the TeamUSA looks disorganized. They had a power play and didn't even get a shot off. The Swiss goalie Hiller looks good, but.......
