Hockey etiquette for the new Blackhawks fan
2009-11-14 16:13:00 Last night, as I watched the Hawks beat the Maple Leafs from Section 308, I realized that the United Center is quickly becoming the new Wrigley Field (minus all the losing). A Blackhawks game has become the place you bring you clients, your kids, or spend your 21st birthday "woo-ing" and asking everyone to buy you drinks. With this in mind, I'd like to lay out a little instruction manual for all you new fans. They are simple little rules that will make the game more enjoyable for you, and the people around you who are actually there for the game. ...
Twilight Zone Hockey...1919
2009-11-07 16:33:00 Imagine this if you please, it is March 1919, there is a World War raging in Europe draining the hearts blood of a generation and setting the stage for the next great war. On the home front there is yet another war against an unseen foe. A flu so virulent that it has killed hundreds of thousands on the North American content . Ultimately millions will die world wide of this unseen, unknown "Spanish Lady" who brings death in her wake. In a world starved for normalcy Stanley Cup finals bravely start as the Pacific Coast Hockey Association champions the Seattle Metropolitans (Mets) were set to play the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadians . The best of five series was...

2nd round Blackhawks draft pick Dan Bertram leaves hockey: IceHogs
2009-11-05 04:16:00 by Kris GrayUpdate on Blackhawks' Prospect Dan Bertram. In the pre-season Dan Bertram, selected in the second round, 54th overall in the 2005 entry draft by the Chicago Blackhawks suffered an injury in a game against the Peoria Rivermen. At the start of the season he was assigned to the ECHL Toledo Walleyes, the Blackhawks' and IceHogs AA affiliate. Fans soon noticed that he was missing from the Walleye's roster. The AHL transactions had listed him as being added back onto the IceHogs roster on October 12th. According to the IceHogs Director of Communications, Chris Etheridge, "Dan Bertram is pursuing other activities outside of hockey. He is no longer on any team's roster". The exact reason for Bertrams sudden...
Traumatic Brain Injuries : The Smoldering Issue Inside Hockey, Part 2
2009-11-01 16:15:00 This morning I woke up thinking about a conversation I had with Don Granato last summer on the subject of chin straps and head injuries. He spoke to me about sitting at his brothers Tony's bed side nursing him through a serious head injury and his long recovery. Fortunately Tony Granato made a full recovery and is now the assistant head coach for the National Hockey Leagues Pittsburgh Penguins. Again, it illustrated to me that head injuries serious and cumulative, are an issue in this sport and need to be addressed. Everywhere people have heard of "Shaken Baby Syndrome" it is a deadly form of child abuse where an infant or small child's brain is bruised beyond repair by simply...
Traumatic Brain Injuries, the Smoldering Issue Within Hockey
2009-11-01 00:31:00 Yes. it has happened again, another family is sitting vigil in a hospital room with an injured athlete fighting for his life and future. Kirchner Ranger Ben Fenelli was injured in an on ice boarding incident which caused his helmet to fly off upon contact with the glass. Again it calls attention to a smoldering fire within hockey that of helmets, concussions, head injuries and safety equipment. The young men and women that play this sport of fire and ice pay a high price for its power and speed that we all know and love. Although for much of my day I look at the world through a Canon lens, I also have another another working life that of a...
Eye-for-an-eye hockey culture blindsides Blackhawks in Vancouver loss
2009-10-22 19:05:00 I attended Loyola University for 3 1/2 years, but I only graduated from F. U. magna come loudly. Quite a few ignoramus graduates from F. U. So belligerent alumni meetings become a daily occurrence as we cross one another's paths in search of enlightment from people who were smart enough to avoid all the shit F. U. stands for and walk the straight and narrow. So I seek your guidance here. We now anxiously await breaking news, although hopefully not from an indecipherable Joel Quenneville, our own Doctor No. He could convey as much critical information if he spoke solely in mandarin Chinese in his post-game post mortems. In fact, I'd recommend it with that NHL initiative of going...
DVR Nightmare : Friend's Wedding Ruins my Hockey Night
2009-10-11 16:43:00 Yesterday, the Blackhawks had their home opener vs the Colorado Avalanche, but for the first time in years, I wasn't there. Andrew Ladd - Shootout HeroMy friend's Erin and J. (congrats guys) had the nerve to schedule their wedding on the very day the Chicago hockey season begins. Do you know how hard it is to avoid the score of a game in a wedding full of hockey fans and Score listeners? I took all the right steps to prepare for a late night viewing. I put the iPhone on airplane mode so no texts or emails would come through. I made sure the car radio was set to CD, so I wouldn't accidentally catch the score of the game...
Concert review: Portugal. The Man, Hockey
2009-10-11 09:22:00 Based on the strength of their debut, "Mind Chaos," Hockey is easily one of the year's best new bands. So after the Portland group's set was completely ruined by sound problems at Lollapalooza (where the band's helpless attitude only made matters worse), I was eager to see them again in a place with more reliable equipment.Yet here I am again, burned by a live performance by a band I love on disc. What's your problem, Hockey? According to singer Benjamin Grubin at Saturday night's sold out show at Schubas (headlined by Portugal. The Man, pictured), the problem is that this time Grubin is sick. OK, fine. Did Michael Jordan phone it in when he was sick? Never. Does Bono mumble...

A Pest and an Exterminator, Sharing an Outdoor Hockey Heritage
2009-09-17 20:15:00 Two Minnesotans, Joe Finley and Trevor Bruess, are camping with the Capitals this week, and they skated on a line together in Wednesday's Duchesne Cup concluding scrimmage. Minneapolis native Bruess was signed by the Caps last spring after completing his junior season at Minnesota State; he's a modest 6 '0, 209, but he plays bigger than his size, and can he skate! It'd be downright scary to imagine Edina native Joe Finley playing bigger than his 6 '7, 245 frame. As I watched them antagonize the opposition on just about every shift in their scrimmages this week I thought of Bruess as the Pest and Finley as the Exterminator. They're about the same age, and I don't think it's inconceivable to imagine them as part of a Capitals' antagonism outfit in a couple of years. As Minnesota-raised hockey players, Bruess and Finley share a profound appreciation for playing hockey outdoors, on the State of Hockey's abundant frozen playgrounds for puck. "That's where it all st...

Patrick L: Hockey Player & Weight Lifter
2009-09-05 11:28:00 On Allamericanguys new model Patrick L. has now been introduced. Patrick L. comes from eastern Canada. He's a well built, athletic fitness model and hockey player. When's he's not in school or in front of the cameras, he's on the ice playing his favorite sport since childhood. Patrick is so good at hockey he's considering going pro, but right now wants to focus on finishing school. He's a quiet, reserved but very confident young man. Patrick lifts weights about four or five times a week to keep his physique in tip top shape. He wasn't always this beefy and athletic. Just as recently as early high school, Patrick was a lot skinnier. But as you can tell from his portfolio, he's grown into himself quite well. You find a big number of high quality photos and many workout videos with Patrick L. on Allamericanguys.
Kane faces choice: talk or not at USA Hockey camp?
2009-08-13 15:27:00 Patrick Kane appears to be coming to Chicago next week for The USA Hockey Orientation Camp at Seven Bridges Ice Rink in Woodridge.Whether he publically addresses his altercation last Sunday morning with a Buffalo cabbie remains to be seen. The Daily Herald's Tim Sassone is reporting Thursday morning that the Kane hearing that was scheduled for Monday has been moved back to next Thursday in Erie County, N. Y. Kane lawyer Paul Cambria wanted the hearing delay, Sassone said, so that Kane could attend the three-day camp that opens Monday. If Kane follows Blackhawks president John McDonough's lead, he could say that he can't give any comment while the matter is being adjudicated. That's not going to stop the cameras and tape recorders...
Lolla '09 review: Hockey
2009-08-07 20:25:00 11:30 a.m. PlayStation StageAfter 3.5 songs and two complete power shutdowns, Hockey threw in the towel. The crippling sound issues weren't their fault, but the promising Portland disco-rockers didn't handle it well, with singer Benjamin Grubin somewhere between a tantrum and tears. The band thanked fans by tossing out cans of free beer, which seems like a good way to have a lawsuit on your hands before your debut drops (in October). Before then, the band should, as their song says, "Learn to Lose."Find more in our complete Lollapalooza guide...
Dudley: McDonough increasingly "involved in hockey operation"
2009-07-17 19:07:00 It won't create as much buzz and bother around the beleaguered John McDonough as Martin Havlat claiming that he and some current Blackhawks players "know a phony when they see one." That's a concise zinger, right to the point and leaving a bruise on the old ego. But another Dale Tallon friend, former assistant Hawks GM Rick Dudley, basically challenged McDonough's contention this week at the press conference in which he introduced Stan Bowman as Tallon's replacement that he stays out of the player personnel decisions. "I know John was becoming more and more involved in the hockey operation of the team," Dudley told Toronto radio host Bob McCown on The Fan 590 this week. Dudley didn't elaborate and...

TMI Thursday: Overtime Hockey
2009-05-07 18:16:00 There is nothing in sports comparable to overtime in the NHL playoffs. The players play to exhaustion and fans? blood pressure goes up as each shot towards the net could be cause for celebration or dejection. I remember being a junior in college watching game four of the 1996 Penguins-Capitals Eastern Conference semifinals when Petr Nedved scored in quadruple overtime and then staying up all night to write a paper. I also remember watching game four of the 2000 Penguins-Flyers Eastern Conference semifinals when Keith Primeau won the game for Philadelphia in the fifth overtime. I had to drive home from my friends? house, barely stayed awake the next day at work and school and constantly questioned why I stayed up so late to watch THAT. So yesterday, I attended trivia night at a bar/restaurant about 25 minutes from my house (you?ll see the questions in next week?s Trivia Tuesday). Trivia ended near the beginning of the Penguins-Capitals overtime, and I decided to stick around to wat...

Albania Hockey Watch
2009-04-19 20:49:00 Maybe this can be a recurring feature! Let's ask the Society for International Hockey Research (of which I'm a proud member) about Albanian hockey...No ice rinks and no ice hockey played in the country.Oh.Well, anyway. Desperately looking for something good after the Blues went down 2-0 to the Canucks (the Canucks!), I did some reading on Blues prospect Aaron Palushaj (now playing for Peoria) and discovered: dude is Albanian! This is, natch, awesome news for me and other Albaniaphiles, although reading further in a story it talks about how he passed up an Albania vacation, which shows some poor judgment, in my opinion. He looks like a pretty certain bet to make the NHL, where he'd be (as far as I know - if anyone knows of others, please tell me) the second Albanian-heritage player in the league, after ... Tie Domi. Domi's a lot to make up for, so please join me in cheering for Palushaj to succeed, and we're going to add him to the PPA Ring of Fame. (Ring of Fame does not actuall...
