Column and Commentary by The Evil Q jim@accnation.com Contrary to popular belief, I haven’t been in my hammock enjoying a cool one the past few Fridays. Rather, I’ve been hard at work putting the finishing touches on our new facilities. As anyone who has moved can tell you, nothing ever goes exactly as you’d like it to, thus ...
Can ACC football ever be a national factor again?
2008-05-27 12:30:00
Story by Patrick Hite patrick@accnation.com In the not-too-distant past, ACC football was Florida State and the eight dwarfs. In an effort to upgrade, the ACC added Miami and Virginia Tech four years ago. The only problem with the move is that it hasn’t helped yet. In the past decade, the ACC has one win in a BCS bowl ...

2008-05-26 04:44:00
From the Virginia Tech Web site: The Virginia Tech softball team’s magical postseason run continued with an emphatic sweep of sixth-ranked Michigan in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament in Ann Arbor on Sunday. Tech had defeated the Wolverines 1-0 earlier in the day with a 15-strikeout performance by pitcher Angela Tincher, and, needing ...

ACC Nation baseball power poll ? May 18
2008-05-18 06:51:00
The regular season is complete and the ACC Tournament begins Wednesday in Jacksonville. This is unofficial, since the ACC won’t release the seedings until Sunday afternoon, but it appears this is the way things will shape up: Division A will consist of No. 1 Miami, No. 4 NC State, No. 5 Georgia Tech and No. ...
Bye-bye Boise (hello D.C.?)
2008-05-15 20:47:00
Column by Patrick Hite patrick@accnation.com Most of the news coming out of the ACC’s spring meetings was expected — no 18-game schedule in basketball or 9-game schedule in football– but I thought the best news this week was that, after 2008, the ACC won’t be affiliated with the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho. Despite what John Swofford said ...

ACC Nation baseball power poll ? May 12
2008-05-12 15:10:00
After studying the ACC baseball standings for three minutes (it shows below) Sunday afternoon, I believe seven six of the eight spots have been claimed in the ACC Tournament. Should ACC hoops split into divisions?
2008-05-07 05:25:00
Column by Patrick Hite patrick@accnation.com Poll: What format would you like to see? The ACC’s athletics directors will discuss a possible 18-game schedule for men’s basketball at next week’s spring meetings. So far, I’ve seen just one benefit from an 18-game schedule - the ACC can line its pocket a little more. With the additional games, it’s hard to ...

ACC baseball power poll ? April 28
2008-04-28 16:30:00
Virginia took the largest drop this week and, if I could have justified it, I would have dropped them farther. If it wasn’t for Clemson, UVa. would be the most disappointing team in the ACC this year. Sure, the Cavaliers have 32 wins overall and a winning record in the conference, but they haven’t won a ...

2008-04-21 17:02:00
Here is the power poll for this week. We had our first tie of the season, with Clemson and Duke getting rained out in the 11th inning Sunday with the scored tied at six. What’s wrong with Clemson? Weren’t the Tigers supposed to be good? Is it just that I haven’t paid attention much before this week, ...

2008-04-20 04:20:00

Column by Will Ojanen will@accnation.com The final chapter has officially been written on the college basketball season. Talking Hokies
2008-03-25 06:07:00
In Monday's Miami Herald, Barry Jackson informed us of this little Dolphins nugget in his latest article: The Dolphins are interested in several Virginia Tech players and sent at least three officials to their Pro Day on Thursday -- more than the norm. Defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers studied four big linemen -- Barry Booker, Chris Ellis, Carlton Powell and Kory Robertson. Receivers coach Karl Dorrell watched Eddie Royal, Justin Harper and Josh Morgan. There's also cornerback Brandon Flowers and linebacker Xavier Adibi (who, at 230, is smaller than the Dolphins' prototype at that position). So considering the Dolphins' interest in Virginia Tech prospects, I wanted to just highlight a few of these Hokies (ones not named Flowers or Adibi, as they're much more well-known). Chris Ellis Ellis, a DE, is a very interesting prospect, especially in the Dolphins' case.  At 6'4, 263, he's a almost a "poor man's" Chris Long.  He ran a 4.71 40 at the Combine, but improve...

How safe are the bubble teams?
2008-03-13 02:55:00
By Will Ojanen will@accnation.com It’s almost impossible to predict who’s going to the NCAA Tournament from one day to the next. At the beginning of a week, we could say one team is in, and three days later, we could say they’re out. In the case of the ACC, one would assume that there are three locks into the big ...

Wussconsin? Badgers back out of game with Hokies
2008-03-05 03:44:00
Ok, I know that division one teams like to get some conference tune up games versus what you would call cupcakes. That’s a given. It’s not like basketball where the trend has been for years that the nonconference schedule needs to be a little bit thicker for NCAA seeding, and well, competitiveness down the stretch. But for football, it has long been where scores like 73-10 in the first few weeks aren’t really much of a surprise due to the huge imbalance of these games. But for Wisconsin, they had scheduled Virginia Tech–a surefire top 25 and potential BCS team–on their schedule, but when the official schedule came out–poof–the Hokies were gone, replaced by powerhouse Cal Poly. Ummm…yeah….ok&hel-lip;. (more…)

This time a four-shot lead over No. 9 Auburn was enough to ...
