Jetting around the country and calling hotels home is a way of life for presidential candidates. But are they making smart travel choices? Holiday Inn Express has set out to explore how thrifty candidates are being when it comes to basic campaign needs, such as hotel lodging on the campaign trail. The “Stay Smart, America” Web site tallies the amount spent on lodging by presidential candidates during this election and compares it with how much they could have saved by staying at a Holiday Inn Express. Users can view the cumulative lodging expenses for each individual candidate on the “smart-o-meter” as well as total expenses by each party as a whole. For lots of reasons, I prefer to keep my personal finances out of my work finances, and, since my place of business chooses not to pay for your hotel room on their card, I got my hotel room totals ahead of time, and, brought checks with me. I called the hotel before I arrived, and, made sure it was OK to use cash as a deposit "incidentals" as I have had a bad experience using my own credit card, and, they said, "Sure!" So, I arrived, presented them the check, and, gave them my money so they could sleep at night in case I were to run up a big phone bill and clean out the mini-bar. They looked at me a bit sideways since I'm sure it doesn't happen a lot, but, they let me in, anyway. I ordered room service, signed the bill, and, went about my business.
