Norovirus and Holland America:
2008-02-26 19:02:00 Over 100 passengers were sick at sea on the latest cruise on the Holland America Ryndam. And it isn't because of the waves, but the dreaded norovirus. News goes in cycles and it seems like two years ago, you couldn't swing a cat without hearing about the latest virus attack on a cruise ship. The news isn't as prevalent these days, but these outbreaks still happen and on a regular basis. The Ryndam herself has had four confirmed outbreaks since early 2007 of the nasty stomach bug. So why do they hit cruises so hard? There are a few reasons that these problems hit cruises, and one big way to help you avoid getting sick at sea.Norovirus and other illnesses have "epidemic" effects on cruise ships for pretty simple reasons. The biggest reason: thousands of people share the same limited space for days at a time. The sickness is probably shared just as often at restaurants, hotels and other public places. But people generally aren't together for long periods on an airplane. The longest...

Cruises Now Have Fuel Surcharges for 2008
2007-11-08 15:39:00 Once again Carnival is leading the way, but this time its out of necessity rather than enhancing the cruise experience. The price of oil is finally affecting the cruise industry in a big way. Starting with all voyages sailing after February 1, 2008, you will now be assessed a $5 per day fuel surcharge, not to exceed $70 for the cruise per person. Carnival said that due to rapidly escalating fuel prices, their fuel costs have gone up over 140% over the last three years. In fairness to the Carnival, they will still be footing two thirds of the cost, with the supplement being used to offset the other third. You’ll have to agree, it could be a lot worse. At the gas pumps, no one is helping us with our rising fuel costs. We had a similar crunch back in the early 1990s that eventually went away. Hopefully this one will follow the same route.
Holland America Investing in its Cruise Customers
2007-11-04 16:57:00 Holland America is taking great strides to make sure its cruise customers are receiving the first class treatment that has always been a moniker of Holland America. By investing over $425 million in remodeled staterooms, speciality cafes, new activities and a lot more amenities, Holland America is continuing a brand awareness that has been an industry leader for many years. Many of the onboard enhancements are in partnerships with powerful entities like the NY Times, who powers the new Explorations Cafe on board the Prinsendam. It comes as no surprise to me that Holland America is making every effort to maintain a healthy relationship with one of the most loyal past passenger bases in cruisng.

Holland America's Oosterdam Reporters Review
2007-10-17 14:47:00 A reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel had the opportunity to get a personal tour of Holland America's Oosterdam recently. Specifically the Galley. She goes into depth what you will find on a cruise ship in the line of cleanliness and the amount of food on board in any given week. The galley tour is something every cruiser should do at least once. Most cruise ships offer the tour on each cruise. It will amaze you with how much is made from scratch on board and the amount of time and effort is put into every meal that is prepared on board. The article is a great read, and just makes me want to go on another galley tour myself.
