Uber Sexy Touchscreen Home Automation Hub
2008-05-12 19:48:00 Invariably there will be those that will argue that, in ?merely? being a concept, this touchscreen universal remote conceived of by David Chacon has the luxury of being as desirable as it pleases in being wholly fictitious and constrained only by the designer?s scope of imagination, but to do so would negate the fact that it?s the concepts of today lead to the products of tomorrow and so are as valid a focus of our attention as any product that has successfully made the truncated path through from concept to commercially available product.Known simply as the Universal Remote, David Chacon?s touchscreen concept is envisaged as being a flash based device capable of displaying (and therefore controlling) just about anything that?s can be controlled wirelessly, from switching TV channels, filtering through your MP3 playlists to closing your front room?s curtains and putting the your children to bed after reading them a storyAgreed, the concept is big on looks and somewhat lacking in spe...

Home automation system, YouTube nab burglars
2008-04-09 13:34:00 There's a great story over at CNET about how technology and You Tube has helped nab a burgalar in Indiana. Fans of home automation systems controlled by a personal computer like to speculate about how their software might be able to snare intruders. An Indiana man named Fred Thompson actually did it. Court documents show the story started after Thompson's home in Fort Wayne, Ind., was burglarized. Thompson responded by setting up a video camera hooked up to his computer and configured it to remotely notify him when motion was detected when the house was supposed to be empty. On October 10, 2006, the system notified Thompson that movement was detected. He jumped in his car, called the police, and headed home. Thompson and Officer Stephanie Souther found that the house's front door was unlocked and a window in the rear was open, but that nobody was actually inside. The recorded video showed a man entering from the rear of the house, unlocking the front door to let someone els...

The ABI study points to several Linux-based systems as future drivers of home automation adoption. (Click for larger view of AMX's Linux-based Modero home automation panel) Four years ago, ABI predicted huge success for the leading wireless home automation standard, ZigBee, calling the low-cost, mesh-based, low-bandwidth technology a "sleeping giant." The market has yet to awaken, however. The obstacles to success, says ABI, have included the expense of luxury custom-installed systems, and the unreliability of low-end DIY products using older technologies, such as powerline-based X10 set-ups. Home automation
2007-04-15 11:12:00 Home automation (also called domotics) is a field within building automation, specializing in the specific automation requirements of private homes and in the application of automation techniques for the comfort and security of its residents. Although many techniques used in building automation (such as light and climate control, control of doors and window shutters, security and surveillance systems, etc.) are also used in home automation, additional functions in home automation include the control of multi-media home entertainment systems, automatic plant watering and pet feeding, and automatic scenes for dinners and parties. The main difference between building automation and home automation is, however, the human interface. In home automation, ergonomics is of particular importance: the control should be largely image-based and self-explanatory. When home automation is installed during construction of a new home, usually control wires are added before the drywall is installed. T...
