‘Futility of payback’ delays home improvements
2008-09-08 21:44:00 Consumers nationwide were slightly less nervous about declining home values in August than July, but they still say they are cutting back on their spending, according to the latest Discover U.S. Spending Monitor monthly survey. The August survey of 15,000 U.S. adults showed 57.8% were somewhat or very concerned about their home value decreasing compared to 58.4% the month before. Of those who were worried, 45.2% in August said they would cut back spending vs. 47.6% in July. If they actually cut their spending, ailing contractors, building suppliers and home improvement stores may be in for an even worse time. The poll showed that 16.1% of those surveyed in August would cut back on home improvements, up from 12.7% in July. There is a lot actually I have in mind as I would want so much to make all of our furniture match. In fact, I am having a brainstorm at this very moment. The curtains definitely needs changing. The garden needs to be cleaned up. A lovely pergola with matching outdoor furniture would be nice. And a carport is also one of our projects. I could go on and on about what needs to be done. But of course, that will all come into fruition once we have the budget for it. For now, we'll have to do with what we have right now.

2008-02-27 08:09:00 After a sleepless night due to the earth tremor which made our whole house shake, my thoughts this morning are on the house and the home improvements we still need to make.We are getting a quote for some woodworm treatment done on Friday this week as we've noticed some in the loft space. This wasn't picked up on our original survey a couple of years ago so I'm hoping we can stop it early. I'm estimating a cost of about £400 which will eat our travel savings up but this needs to take priority.There are a few other home improvements listed below that we will need to sort out with the house over the next couple of years. 2008-02-15 16:07:00 I am hoping we can work on some home improvements this year so we can get some tax deductions for ourselves. DB has been talking about changing the storm door for our back door and replace the windows in the executive bathroom. Doing all these replacements will definitely help save our energy bills that are sky rocketing especially during these hard times.  With gas prices going up, having a cold draft from the windows and door is definitely not helping at all. Even with DB winterizing the house, it’s not much of a help. He said the whole house really need a lot more insulation than just replacing the doors and windows. Should we then sell and move away to a warmer state? He might.
