Homer Bailey So-So In Return to Majors
2008-06-06 16:05:00
Homer Bailey was called up for his first start of the season on Thursday, and he pitched into the 7th inning, while allowing just 2 earned runs. Last season, the 22-year old prospect struggled with control, leading to a 5.76 ERA, despite a 4-2 record. This season the Reds hope Bailey turns the corner, though his immediate results on Thursday (4 walks) aren't all that convincing. Bailey was an even...
Homer Bailey Update
2008-04-12 00:31:00
After two starts, he's off to a good beginning. Homer has K'd 9 batters in 12 innings and given up 11 baserunners to hold a WHIP of 0.87. With Cueto and Volquez doing well, it will take an injury to a Reds starter for Bailey to get called up.The Reds have a very underrated staff with the likes of Harang, Arroyo, Cueto, Volquez and Bailey around.

Homer Bailey struggles in Reds? 5-3 win over Toronto (AP)
2008-03-25 04:21:00
Given a chance to make his pitch on the big stage, Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey gave another off-the-plate performance Monday night during a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The 21-year-old pitcher failed to last five innings in a start that will go a long way in deciding his immediate future. Bailey walked six in ...
Lackey, Kazmir, Beckett and Homer Bailey
2008-03-18 06:13:00
Lackey, Beckett and Kazmir are currently fighting injury. Lackey’s looks like it will hold him out until mid-May. Kazmir was recently scratched from making his first spring training start due to a lack of arm strength. Beckett… Well, Beckett was oft-injured up until last year. Blisters preliminarily, but hardly a model of good health. What ...
Homer Bailey is Still Elite
2008-03-11 20:11:00
I’ve been reading a lot of negative feedback about Homer Bailey lately. Cueto is an outstanding pitching prospect, but given a choice between the two, my money is still on Bailey having the more productive career. Don’t let Bailey’s lackluster major league campaign fool you. Besides a poor minor league walk rate (4.23), all of his ...
Reds Demote Homer Bailey to Keep Him Fresh
2007-07-09 10:43:00
The Reds have told young pitching phenom Homer Bailey that he is being demoted to the Triple A Louisville Bats to enable him to stay fresh by pitching a minor league game on Thursday, as the All-Star break will delay his major league turn until July 15.The Thursday start will help keep Bailey fresh.Though his ERA has balooned to more than 6.00, Bailey had a decent game in his last outing, giving up just one run on two hits over five innings. Bailey's early hook was seen as an attempt to build his confidence by limiting his exposure before batters might have begun to figure him out.
Homer Bailey

After his best start of the season, the Reds have optioned hot pitching prospect Homer Bailey to AAA.  There is nothing but a transaction on MLB.com in terms of an explanation.   Why was he sent down?  Was it to keep him on an every 5th day schedule?  Given his start Saturday, he'd be in line to pitch on Thursday.  Despite the good effort yesterday, Homer has given the Reds no reason to do that. If I were a Bailey owner, I wouldn't be alarmed.  At this point in the season, Bailey isn't the difference between winning and losing.  If I wanted to acquire Bailey, this would be a good time as he won't pitched again for at least ten days, and, depending on the generousity of your league's activation rules, you may be able to push that decision into August when the likelihood of 3 good starts and three bad ones won't be as damaging to your ratios.
The Homer Bailey Debut
2007-06-08 16:05:00
Homer Bailey will make his major league debut Friday night against the Cleveland Indians. Bailey is the Reds top pitching prospect and was their No. 1 pick in the June 2004 draft (the seventh pick overall). He was the Reds minor league player of the year last season while at Class A Sarasota and Double-A Chattanooga. In 07, Bailey has been at Triple-A Louisville and is 6-1 in 10 starts with a 2.31 earned run average and 51 strikeouts and 24 walks in 58 innings.Bio: (MLB.com)Given name is David...is called Homer after his great-grandfather...in 2004 graduated from La Grange (TX) High School...in his prep career went 41-4, 0.98 with 536 strikeouts in 298.0 innings...led La Grange to Texas state baseball titles in 2001 and 2004...as a freshman outdueled former Red Ryan Wagner in the championship game...also led La Grange to the state title as a senior, when he was named National High School Player of the Year by USA Today, Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and the National High Sch...

Is It Finally Homer Bailey Time?
2007-06-05 00:48:00
The photo above is from the Cincinnati Post. It’s a picture of Homer Bailey, the Reds pitching phenom who could get his first major league start this weekend. Bailey is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball and his debut can’t come soon enough for Reds fans. The problem is that Bailey’s headshot is without a doubt the least intimidating photo in the history of Major League Baseball. I’m not big on intimidating looks. In fact, I think they’re complete bullshit. Still, Bailey is supposed to be a big Texas fireballer in the mold of Roger Clemens, Josh Beckett, and Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn. Not one major league hitter will fear his fastball if they know it’s coming from those puppy dog eyes and that finely cropped mullet. Bailey had better find a new look, whether it’s a goatee, a buzzcut, or the Drew Gooden neck patch. The length of his stay in the big leagues could depend on it.
Homer Bailey

The Reds placed LHP Eric Milton on the 15-day DL with elbow soreness.  Following the promotiuons of top pitching prospects Phil Hughes and Tim Lincecum, is there any reason for fantasy players not to hope that the Reds will follow suit and recall their top pitching prospect, David Dewitt Bailey, aka Homer Bailey? Bailey has very good 4x4 statistics for the AAA Louisville Bats - 3 W, 1.83 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.  However, in 5x5 formats, his Ks offer some concern.  He has only 21 in 34.1 innings pitched.  He has also walked 15 batters.  Are those the types of peripherals that should get fantasy players trigger-happy with the top waiver claims/FAAB dollars? I don't think so.  The early efforts of Hughes and Lincecum offer a more likely pattern - a mixture of good and bad starts. Keeper leagues are a different situation, though.  In those, the decision is based on the ability of your roster to withstand the erratic performances.  If it can, then th...
