Homeschoolers Invited to Write for Subway
2008-07-11 04:01:00
Y ou may recall about six weeks ago the buzz among homeschoolers was the lack of acceptance by Subway to allow homeschoolers to particiate with writing contest.  I wrote briefly on it here and yesterday I received a comment that Subway has revised this: I wanted to let everyone know that Subway has revamped their Every Sandwich Tells a Story contest, reintroducing it as a Summer Special, running through August 31. They even took out a banner ad with Homeschooling Today magazine. For all those who clamored about Subway excluding homeschoolers, now’s the time to show them that we will indeed participate when they include us. The registration form I saw asks for the Child’s School Name, so homeschoolers should make sure they enter something like Smith Family Homeschool, rather than Smith Academy. Blessings, Jim Bob I also visited the site, and found that it is geared for children ages P-K through 6th grade for those within the USA.    You can read all the details of the cont...
Subway & Schoolastic Blocks Out Homeschoolers
2008-05-30 06:01:00
(I wrote this post earlier in the week, saving it to post today. I received several e-mails today regarding the apology Subway has given to HSLDA. You can read it here.) I f you homeschool, you probably have read numerous times about the writing contest Subway & Schoolastic are having.  This is the disclaimer that removes homeschoolers: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted. (emphasis added)  I may not be as irrate as some blogs and e-mails that I have received regarding it.  It certainly is a bummer that homeschoolers are specifically excluded.  However, it may be a lack of knowledge on their side.  The “grand prize” is $5,000 value of sports equipment.  Subway and Schoolastic may not realize what a large community homeschooling is...
Homeschoolers of Color
2008-05-29 01:13:00
I promise to get pictures of our trip to Six Flags (last week!) posted very soon. In the meantime, a friend dug up this article for me, and I am sharing. My decision to homeschool my kids was strongly (that’s an understatement) influenced by the way the school district was treating my biracial ...
Are homeschoolers ready to be ?normal??
2008-05-21 08:27:00
After reading an update on re Rachel L which stated that the amicus brief filed jointly by California’s three homeschool organizations had been accepted, I poked around Just Enough and Nothing More’s site a bit, knowing she would have more information.  I have avoided most of the news recently about the case in California because ...
Homeschoolers! Come Out With Your Hands Up!
2008-04-02 03:54:00
When Justice H. Walter Croskey ruled that “California courts have held that … parents do not have a constitutional right to homeschool their children,” he set off a firestorm of protests from homeschooling parents and organizations, not only throughout the state but throughout the country — and rightly so. What right has any court or government ...
Places to Find High School Level Courses for Homeschoolers
2008-03-31 07:00:00
The world has become a global village with the boom in communication methods. The internet has brought the world to our homes. It is not surprising then that home based activities like homeschooling have boomed. It is a lot easier for parents to find and design school level curriculum according to their needs on the net. ...
High School Diplomas and Accreditations for Homeschoolers
2008-03-31 07:00:00
With homeschooling becoming an increasing trend these days, a lot of colleges too are changing their attitude towards such students. Many homeschoolers complete standard high school academics eighteen to twenty-four months, which is a lot faster, compared to the four years in high school. Most colleges have realized this and are accommodating homeschoolers who have ...
Homeschoolers and certification
2008-03-25 09:30:00
For those who have been following the discussion between Stephen Downes and homeschoolers who took his post on the California ruling as an attack against homeschooling, he has responded with a post in which he better clarifies his stance and answers some of the points I brought up in my posts (Homeschooling is NOT abuse ...
Note to homeschoolers: Don?t be psychotic!
2008-03-20 09:30:00
On March 17, Stephen Downes, a senior researcher with the National Research Council who also writes and speaks extensively on education issues, published a brief entry on the court ruling in California in which he essentially equated homeschooling with abuse. Quite a few commenters objected, and I dedicated an entry to the false assumption ...
The Light at the Beginning of the Tunnel
2008-03-13 22:45:00
By: Michael C. Broome Home schooling is not only a right of each and every American, it is also a joy with blessings that many home schoolers wouldn’t trade for anything. Not just the children, but the mothers and fathers that give so much of their time to ensure their children have the best life can ...
Homeschoolers have the Right to Free Choice!
2008-03-12 21:13:00
As a homeschooling parent, this really hits home with me. We have the right to choose how, when, and where to educate our children. It is totally appalling to deprive us of our rights as free human beings. I take the teachings I provide or seek for my children quite seriously, and will fight to ...

2008-03-11 00:00:00
After a California appeals court judge ruled that homeschooling violates California's education law, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger immediately came to the homeschoolers' defense. After all, homeschooling is an important front in the G.O.P.'s War on Public Education, whose goals are twofold:...

2008-03-10 10:28:00
Court: Family's religious beliefs 'no evidence' of 1st Amendment violation It says ". . . the educational program of the State of California was designed to promote the general welfare of all the people and was not designed to accommodate the personal ideas of any individual in the field of education."
Setback for Homeschoolers
2008-03-07 15:17:00
Warning folks: longish post. I never would have the wherewithal to homeschool. I lack the patience and dedication to work with my kids each day, and, truth be told, I looooooove -- no, scratch that! -- cherish my alone time when they're at school. There was even a time when I thought that homeschooling your children was out-and-out crazy. That was before my kids entered the public school
Conversation Between Ignorance & a Homeschooler
2008-03-06 21:35:00
By: Mimi Rothschild “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Mark said as he used a feather and ink to scribble down a phrase on the back of a napkin. “What, isn’t school and education the same?” Mark’s friend, Ignorance, asked. Mark shook his head as he looked into the mirror at his age and ...

Homeschool Hitting Hollywood
2008-02-29 23:14:00
By: Karlie Margaret Houser Reading this article reminds me of why we chose to start The Grace Academy…to break from the norm, to share our faith and values with our children, and recognizing that not everything has to be the way society claims it to be. I trust you’ll enjoy this read as much as I have, ...
Those ?socially inept? homeschoolers
2008-02-14 09:21:00
On the other side of the homeschooling issue, and on the other side of my home state (he likely would recognize the landscape in my header!), Serial Youth Pastor has an entry prompted by a discussion of LB 1141, the anti-homeschool bill proposed in our legislature. Before listing his reasons against homeschooling, however, Serial ...
Good news for Nebraska homeschoolers
2008-02-07 21:52:00
Governor Heinemann had positive words to say to Nebraska homeschoolers at NCHEA’s annual legislative day: If this bill crosses my desk, I will veto it. But he doesn’t think it will make it that far. I may write more later, but for now, you can read Lisa’s thoughts over at Me And My House. For those ...

Libraries and homeschoolers
2008-02-03 07:23:00
For an upcoming issue of Public Libraries, the journal of the Public Library Association, an interesting call for submissions has been issued: Homeschoolers are a growing constituency for public libraries. Families choose to homeschool for many reasons: religious and political; their children?s learning styles; the quality of the public schools. ...
Why would homeschoolers object to state testing?
2008-01-29 08:00:00
Position: Homeschools should not be forced to adopt state standards or submit to state testing. Objection: Raised by “reality check” in the comment section of the Lincoln Journal Star blog. ” If parents are properly homeschooling their children, then a test should not be a problem. “ This argument is appealing on the surface. ...
Vote for German homeschoolers?
2008-01-28 16:59:00
Several blogs recently have asked their readers to help German homeschoolers put a question before their Chancellor regarding homeschooling. Educating Germany provides pretty clear directions. Home Education Magazine even provided a pictorial tutorial. And Dare to Know has a translation of the letter you would be supporting. This is sort of a democratic ...
A Response to ?Should Homeschoolers Teach Logic??
2008-01-26 06:15:00
I have been considering how to address this article at some length now. I think I have arrived at the conclusion that my main desire will be to address the issues raised in the article plainly, but with as much kindness as possible and in as few words as possible. That being said, ...
MO looks at parental rights, tax credits for homeschoolers
2008-01-23 10:35:00
Missouri is taking a look at a parental rights bill, one which also includes a specific provision for homeschoolers. It is short, so here is House Bill 1316, with my thoughts interjected: 210.890. 1. The general assembly finds and declares that it is the natural fundamental right of the parents and legal guardians ...
Polls are Now Open for Homeschoolers!
2008-01-16 06:01:00
Y esterday was Michigan’s primaries.  It’s been quite interesting reading and watching the debates.  I think for us what has made it even more interesting is our older four children are especially interested in it, and can be involved in the conversations with it.  Yes, there were even presidential debates here as we discussed who to vote for - even joked how we could just cancel out each other’s votes!  Our oldest two boys voted for the first time yesterday.  We’ve been checking out books on elections so the younger ones can understand it more too.  So your kids want to vote?  Now they can, at the Homeschool E-store’s  Mock Primary Election.  The site is set up for homeschoolers, ages 7-17 who are USA residents.  Up to five children per household can cast their vote anytime between now and February 4th.  Results of the election and and exit polling results are available real-time.  The final results will be posted Monday, February 4th - the...
?Homeschoolers Beware!? - Huckabee Is Your Worst Nightmare
2008-01-03 04:06:00
We are home schoolers. Nothing could be more important to us than the importance of protecting and encouraging competition with our monopolized school system. However, there is a great danger in just selling out to anyone or anything. My degree is in secondary education. Nothing can be more indoctrinating than the entire public school education, ...
Huckabee and monolithic homeschoolers
2007-12-17 09:55:00
My email box is slowly filling up with article after article connecting presidential candidate Mike Huckabee’s sudden rise to significance in Iowa to the organization of homeschoolers. A sampling: Julie Roe, with characteristic homeschool thrift, is spotlighted in an article from the Washington Post: With no buttons, no yard signs and no glossy literature from his ...
Postcard action for German homeschoolers
2007-11-19 16:33:00
I just received an email requesting assistance in a post card writing campaign that I can wholly support without any qualms or misgivings. This affects the Neubronners, a family in Bremen who began homeschooling in response to their children becoming physically ill in being forced to public school. I have an update to share later, ...
Another set back for German homeschoolers
2007-11-16 18:30:00

Should homeschoolers be concerened with the NEA?
2007-09-26 06:14:00
Jen over at Follow my Whimsy responds to a little homeschool outrage over an article posted on the NEA's website. I was actually surprised this particular article was making any stir at all anymore seeing as it is pretty old. I do not remember when I first read it, but the first reference to it on Technorati was over a year ago. But this led into an interesting question:Yes, the NEA has made it clear that they do not think homeschools can offer students "a comprehensive education experience". Still, they have been pretty silent on the subject since 2002. That's five years! Why are we still worried about what they said five years ago? Actually why are we worried about what they say at all?Obvious to those who frequent this blog, I disagree. Let's start with what the NEA said and when they said it. I'll spare you the entire quote because I think we have read it enough. You can follow the link if you want to read it for old time's sake. The National Education Association beli...

The Benefits of Home Schooling Special Needs Students
2007-06-20 18:07:00
By Mimi Rothschild One of the most appealing aspects of home schooling is that home schoolers receive all of the teacher?s attention, instead of sharing it with hundreds of students. Home schooling is especially effective when the parent is able to devote the majority of their attention to a home schooler with special needs, like ...
Why Keep Public Schools Around?
2007-06-14 21:38:00
By Mimi Rothschild In a recent series of articles, Jonah Goldberg of The National Review Online and David Gelernter of The Weekly Standard both propose that America might be better off without public schools and discuss how we might decide whether to have them or not.
