RJ Vanecko: Is The Chicago Police Department Covering Up A Homicide?
2011-03-02 00:10:00
RJ Vanecko: Is The Chicago Police Department Covering Up A Homicide? The Chicago Sun-Times printed a Watchdog Investigation, yesterday and today, regarding the 2004 death of David Koschman. After he died, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office called the death a homicide, yet, no one has been charged to date....After the punch was thrown, that person and another of the three men ran away. One of those two men was Richard J. Vanecko, the mayors nephew...From what I have read, up until now, I don't believe that there was/is a snowball's chance in hell that there would have ever been a fair and comprehensive investigation.

Melissa Leo, image via WikipediaBy BOB ANDELMAN Mr. Media® Radio Network (Editor's Note: Melissa Leo was a guest on the show back in March 2010. She was a great guest, so why not re-run the interview now? Tomorrow night, we'll find out whether she won the 2011 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Fighter with Christian Bale. Hopefully, this will put her over the top!) I think it was the hair. A Niagara Falls of cascading, curly, dirty red tresses framing a face that could alarm the viewer with its world-weary concern or lighten up any scene with a rare outburst of laughter. That was how most of us came to know Melissa Leo, a.k.a., female Det. Sgt. Kay Howard, on NBC?s long-running series, Homicide: Life on the Street. She was a hardened veteran investigating murder among a crew of tough guys who treated with respect and a smidgen of trepidation. David Simon, THE WIRE, HBO show creator: Mr. Media Audio Interview Rewind
2008-04-29 02:45:00
(Mr. Media is on vacation this week, so we're rewinding to some of the podcast's earlier, most popular interviews to catch up new listeners!)Today, it?s January 26, 2007, and I am sitting across from David Simon, creator of the critically-acclaimed and Peabody Award-winning HBO series, The Wire. We are speaking at The Inn at the Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, where Simon spent the last week working with students at Eckerd College. The fiftieth episode and fourth-season finale of The Wire aired just a few weeks ago, and the fifth season goes into production in March, so Simon is hopefully enjoying a vacation of sorts.I am an admitted late-comer to The Wire, having seen my first episode just last September in a New Jersey hotel room. I was struck by the show?s tension and extraordinarily tight script and character development, which has often been overshadowed by better-known HBO shows, such as The Sopranos and Deadwood. If you like those shows and you haven?t already caught The Wi...

David Simon, "The Wire" creator: Mr. Media Interview, Part 2
2008-01-05 06:44:00
(Return to Part 1)ANDELMAN: Let me ask you this, and this is a basic piece of business, but now I came to the show very late, and I think part of the reason I came to it late was the name. I just couldn?t get my arms around The Wire, so I want to ask you for people who might hear this or read this or haven?t seen it, can you give us kind of the Evelyn Wood breakdown of what the show is about and where the name The Wire came from?SIMON: Sure. The Wire is a double entendre of sorts. It specifically refers to the electronic surveillance methods used by the police to try to undermine and take apart a criminal organization. In the first season, it would have been a drug organization, the second season, it was a smuggling organization, and so forth, but that?s more the literal reason for the title. The title really refers to almost an imaginary but inviolate boundary between the two Americas, between the functional, post-industrial economy that is minting new millionaires every day and cr...

The Wire's Back! Sneak Preview Preview of Season 5, Episode 1 (no real spo
2008-01-02 01:48:00
Whoah! What a New Year's treat. I just saw the first episode of the new, final Season 5 of The Wire on HBO's On Demand! And I loved it!Here are some of the reasons why ...It's great to hear Steve Earle's rendition of "Down in the Hole". Clear and smooth as a whistle. You can hear it here, if you don't believe me ... And here are more of my thoughts about the now-five versions of this great title song...And the storyline this season looks fine, too. This television season - 2007-2008 - may be remembered as one of the great years for newspapers on television. Journeyman featured a time traveler working out of a newspaper in San Francisco (and I sure hope it continues), and The Wire's finale season will look at the workings of a newspaper in Baltimore.Meldrick from Homicide: Life on the Street - aka Clark Johnson - looks to be playing the main newspaper part, and that's good news. Johnson's a fine actor. And I'm in favor of all possible, deepening connections between ...

Continuing Journeyman: 2
2007-10-02 05:44:00
The second episode of Journeyman crystallized what I was thinking (and wrote) about the premier of Journeyman last week: the new NBC time travel series is really about the intricate, time-entwined personal lives of the central characters, unlike Quantum Leap, in which Sam's personal life only rose into story prominence on very special occasions.Journeyman is clearly - and, so far, tantalizingly - the cat's-cradle story of four people. Dan (Kevin McKidd) and Livia (Moon Bloodgood) are time travelers, erstwhile lovers, and maybe more. Livia's further along in this time travel business than is Dan, but Dan is the focus of the story. Meanwhile, Dan's slowly managing to convince his wife Katie (Gretchen Egolf) that he's time traveling. This week, Dan time-vaults to the past from a plane, in which he is seated next to Katie - a nice touch, for this leaves no way she can think he just tripped out on the street somewhere, and that's why he's not home. And Katie and Dan's brothe...
Former Homicide Detective Rod Wheeler on Hannity & Colmes Tonight: "Anyone
2007-09-21 06:50:00
"Anyone listening to John Kerry should be tasered" - that "joke" from a former homicide detective, one Rod Wheeler, who Fox News chose to have as a guest on Hannity and Colmes tonight.Wheeler said a lot more - that Andrew Meyer clearly deserved to be tasered, that he was clearly threatening the police who were escorting him away from the microphone - even though the videos of the event clearly show otherwise. But Wheeler is entitled to his erroneous opinion of what happened. He's of course also entitled to his misguided sense of humor. I guess we should at least be happy that someone with his values is a former rather than a current homicide detective. But where was Sean Hannity's outrage or even disagreement with his guest for taking such a tasteless shot at John Kerry's supporters, at a time in which tasering and politics and freedom of speech have become sadly intertwined? Now, more than ever, we need candidates like Ron Paul who respect both the First Amendment and the necessar...

Homicide by Alligator
2007-07-18 21:21:00
Harrel Franklin Braddy, an ex-con, was convicted yesterday for attempting to murder Shandelle Maycock and leaving her 5 year old baby girl Quatisha in the Everglades to get eaten alive by alligators in 1998. I know, you are horrified, in total shock aren’t you? I know I am. In November of 1998 Braddy went into the home of Maycock and when she asked him to leave he became totally enraged and began choking her until she was unconscious. The Associated Press reports, “He choked Maycock until she was unconscious and then forced her and Quatisha into his car, the woman testified. At one point, Maycock gained consciousness, grabbed the child and jumped out of the moving vehicle. Braddy stopped, choked the woman again and put her in the trunk, she testified.
