Chocolate Beer In Ancient Honduras
2008-04-30 20:13:00
Not only were the first chocoholics tinkering with cacao around 1100 B.C. - 500 years earlier than previously thought - but they might have been doing so to get a tipsy buzz. A recent chemical analysis of 3,000-year-old pottery shards in northern Honduras turned up traces of theobromine (its name means "food of the gods"), a chemical that is found in cacao. The discovery is the oldest evidence of cacao manipulation. The analyzed vessel had a narrow spout, and the researchers speculate that the locals were imbibing a wine-like drink made by fermenting the pulp that surrounds the seeds of the cacao plant. In contrast, the nonalcoholic concoction favored by Aztecs some 2,000 years later was prepared in wide-lipped jugs, and the liquid was poured back and forth to create froth.Beer enthusiasts can look forward to a loose re-creation of the ancient brew sometime this year. Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Delaware is producing a drink based on the original recipe, with the help of biomolecul...

Travel to Guatemala from Honduras
2008-04-02 01:02:00
Travel to Guatemala from HondurasI cross the border from Honduras to Guatemala yesterday. The tourist shuttle from Copan to Antigua was the way I rolled. It was nearly as cheap as the local buses and far more direct. Smarts takes precedence over pride in travel, and I have no qualms about going somewhere the best way possible. So I packed into a van with a couple other tourists and rode out a comfortable ride to Antigua.I have a habit of falling directly to sleep as soon as I begin riding on a bus - or a plane, train, or car for that matter - so I cannot really write much about what the Guatemalan countryside looked like. But from what I managed to take in from brief breaks in my dreams, I must conclude, without a doubt, that Guatemala is a beautiful country.Wondrous volcanos, rolling hills, farms, rivers, and lakes stretched out before me unimpeded for as far as I could see . . . and then I feel back to sleep. I do not know how I do it. I don’t know how I am able to fall asleep a...
To Guatemala from Honduras
2008-03-29 02:45:00
To Guatemala from Honduras Today was my last day of working at Copan, my last day of hanging out with the archaeologist campensinos, unearthing the Maya, and dreaming my way through the stone chiseled corridors and byways of a truly ancient city. I have learned much from this archaeology project - chalked up another mark on the old curriculum vitae - but it is time to be moving on. I offered my farewells to the cowboy hat wearing campesinos at the site, shook hands, got a little choked up, and made my final bows to good old Copan. For Guatemala calls. As well as a meeting with the Hobo Traveler.Andy made Antigua yesterday. I am excited to cross his path. The world turns, times change, but rivers still run to the sea. Guatemala is the place where I may soon meet the Hobo Traveler. I am thinking over the ways that I can get from Copan to Antigua. The Guatemala border is only 12 km from where I am standing, and I think that Antigua is only a few hours beyond that. I am close. There ar...
Easter in Honduras
2008-03-25 03:12:00
Easter in HondurasToday is Easter. I awoke well rested at nine AM - a little later than I usual begin to stir, but I did not feel lazy. I looked out the window. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and I debated about whether or not I wanted to go to church or just walk around all day over the trails and rivers of the larger church. I like traditions. I went to church. It is funny to me how those who study culture have the uncanny ability to find sustenance in all traditions but their own. I chided my Guatemalan archaeologist friend about this the night before after he contorted his face into an exaggerated grimace when I asked him if he was going to church on Easter. I laughed at the thought that I may now be approaching my own culture and my family’s religion as an outsider. I now find myself going to church in the same way as I go to Buddhist temples - curious and wide-eyed with wonder. I think that I have become a perpetual visitor. But I walked to the church this Easter with...

Good Friday in Honduras
2008-03-22 00:56:00
Good Friday in Honduras A large procession of pious Hondurans, curious tourists, and men haphazardly dressed up in impromptu biblical getup moved through the cobble stone streets of Copan Ruinas today. They clogged the thoroughfares of the town with celebration and good cheer. For it is Good Friday across the Christian world, and the Stations of the Cross are remembered and honored with words of remembrance, faith, and . . . politics?I find it truly amazing how Latin Americans can somehow manage to inveigle and interweave political rants into every aspect of life, conversation, and, yes, even worship. As I watched the procession, I became nostalgic for the days of my youth when my mother would suit me up in uncomfortable ‘church clothes,’ warn be to be on my best behavior, and, as added incentive I am sure, fastened the top button of my shirt so that I was slightly choked. But once this chastening suit was fought over me - I, being a child of normal temperament, would of cours...

Cockfight in Honduras VideoThe following is a video of the cockfight that I wrote about in the, At the Cockfight post. The ritual of the cockfight seems to be the same the world over. From the sucking of the rooster's head by the handler to the rules of the fight the cockfight to the symbolism, the cockfight seems to be very similar from Bali to Honduras. I have been reading my Clifford Geertz hehehe.Cockfight video: Wade from Vagabond Journey.comCopan Ruinas, HondurasMarch 20, 2008Eight years of round the world vagabond travel. Undernourished in Honduras
2008-03-18 01:55:00
Undernourished in HondurasMy thumbnails are becoming textured with slight waves and ridges, I have gone for weeks on end without an adequate amount of vegetables or fruit - I feel tired, slightly weak, and prone to illness. I think that I am becoming undernourished in Central America. I need to begin frequenting the markets, rather than restaurants, to satiate my nutritional needs. In travel, it is very easy to come by dishes that boast high protein, carbohydrates, and sugars, but outside of the southern Asian triangle, I have found that it takes a little effort to come by a day’s dose of plant food. I know that if I only eat in restaurants in many regions of the world that I could go for weeks without a good, properly cooked serving of vegetables, and, as far as fruits go, the only ones that I will consume will be the slices of lime placed upon my plate for appearance’s sake. This is not enough fruit and vegetable batter to keep a wanderer moving on. I want my five fruits and ve...

Going to Honduras
2008-02-27 21:37:00
Going to HondurasI am now back in Costa Rica after five days in Panama. It was a good swing down there. Glad I went. Now I am getting ready to go to Honduras. I got on an archaeology project at Copan. I am going to try to make it there in one clean swoop, so I got a ticket on the Tica Bus that goes to San Pedro Sula. Paid nearly $50 for this ticket, and it takes two days of riding across three countries to get there. So I am going to get the Chinese Tourist tour of Northern Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Southern Honduras. Oh well, I have been to these countries before, and I need to get to get to Copan quickly. It is set up, a month of archaeology fieldwork at a famous site, and then I am free to wander on. Mira and I found an apartment a block from the Copan Archaeology office for $100 a month. That is $50 each. Not bad, the article that I wrote for Dan at Café Abroad Magazine will be getting me a bed for a month. Thanks Dan!After Copan I think that we will be traveling through Guate...

A Fright by Candlelight.
2008-02-23 17:58:00
We found ourselves in Copan Ruinas, Honduras around Valentine?s Day and decided to splurge on a nice place and dinner for the occasion. There?s a nice hacienda with 8 rooms scattered about just outside town that prepares gourmet food and runs mainly by candlelight. It?s a complete luxury style bed and breakfast in a rural Honduras setting. We had a great afternoon and by the time the sun set, the entire grounds were covered in candles. Dinner consisted of five amazing courses all served outside under the stars. All was going well until I overheard a mother and daughter telling a story to their friends during the meal. I couldn?t really believe what I was hearing. Do we have to worry about that here?!

Honduras, Central America
2007-09-12 19:47:00
I took a couple days to get through Honduras, which certainly doesn't do this jaw-dropping-incredible-scenery- country justice. There are uncountable miles of sugar cane fields set amid a backdrop of rolling hills and thunderstorms. Something out of "The Earth is Being Born" movie making material.Hurricane Felix went through part of Honduras, wrecking havoc and lives. Life just seems so ironic and unjust sometimes. The areas effected are the hardest to reach in terms of aid and support.I waited out Hurricane Felix in Guatemala. I am chicken of submitting myself to Mother Natures snarky moods on the world. I like peace and calm and blue skies. But to know and understand what makes life good, we need to experience the bad. Maybe not first hand anymore. I think I may be getting too old for the Hurricane Parties. On to more serene adventures!

Well we have survived and completed mission trip '07 to Central America Honduras. And every year we are thourougly blessed to see how God moved in such a powerful way. No doubt was my time there a time of revival and excitment. To give you a little update about our central american endeavors, I lead a short term team with "Baptist Medical and Dental Missions International" (http://www.bmdmi.org) every year to Honduras central america. This year we were able to go into a small village called Jacalaepa (sp?) here we were able to do bible schools and a tent revival at night. We thank God for the about 50 professions of faith. God is always so amazing! Many stories to tell you about and not enough blog space to write it. But in a nutshell one of the greatest things that we saw, was a young lady who had left the church to become a homosexual, and then repented and exited out of that lifestyle. That was one of the major things that we saw God do, and was no doubt...
