Apples dipped in honey…what’s not to like?
2009-09-15 03:33:00
Every year before Rosh Hashanah, synagogues send tickets to members for High Holy Day services. Non-members in the Tampa Bay area usually pay around $200. That’s right. Local Jews pay that kind of money for tickets to a show that doesn’t include Neil Diamond or a free buffet. Who knew? Included is usually a letter that lays out the rules and regulations for attending such services. Below please find the letter I received with my additions in bold. Bold. Get it? Dear Members and Guests: Enclosed are your non-transferable tickets for the High Holy Day services. We’re not kidding. Non-transferable means non-transferable, Judy Simon. Quit trying to pass off Cousin Louie for that ungrateful son who’s having too much fun at Brandeis to come home. Louie’s teeth have started falling out and we can smell the Preparation H a mile away. Tell Louie to purchase his own goddamn ticket. Please bring your tickets to each service and present them to the ushers at the d...

China Honey, You Are An Adulterer. Can You Stand By YOUR Labels?
2009-08-29 18:28:00
A couple of Chinese "executives" were recently found guilty in Seattle Federal Court of having imported and distributed adulterated (well it at least sounds like adulterer) and mislabeled honey into the United States. The honey contained "ciproflaxin, an antibiotic that is used to fight bacterial infections but in rare cases can cause tendon damage and is barred from the food supply." The honey was also mislabeled as having come "Russia, Ukraine and possibly Poland" even though it really came from China. This all reminds me of a couple very good clients who were subjected to full on federal investigations. To camouflage the client, I am going to be very vague here, but I assure you that you will get the gist. Here are the stories: Client 1 is engaged in a very profitable business shipping food product to China, where it is combined with other product, processed, and then shipped to the United States. One day, around a dozen federal agents (from various agencies) show up, ...

Tuesdays with Dorie: Honey-Vanilla Ice Cream
2009-07-28 23:02:00
This week's recipe on page 428-429 from Baking: From my home to yours: Vanilla Ice Cream has been chosen by Lynne of Cafe LynnyLuI've already made a custard based vanilla ice cream, so I played around and prepared the Honey-Vanilla Ice Cream. To prevent ice crystals I added 1 teaspoon guar flour to the ice cream. I am very delighted with the result, neither with starch nor pectin I got such a creamy ice cream. For the recipe visit Lynne of Cafe LynnyLu and enjoy more Vanilla Ice Creams visiting the blogroll at the Tuesday's With Dorie website. Ginger Fig Streusel Tarts With Honey Lavender Ice Cream
2009-07-14 07:32:00
Thank you guys for toasting Barbara with us in my last post. I know it meant a lot to her and it did to me. (And yes, those were my feet!). It's been a tough journey for her and I often told Bill I'd give my last shirt to get on a plane and try to be of some help (laundry, groceries, you know the drill), crack up some stupids joke or just hold someone's hand. He understands. He also adds that he doesn't like when I travel, saying that I always prepare some good dinners for him to eat while I am gone, I rarely leave dessert. Wrong. Cookies, I always make cookies. This past weekend however, when I went to Veronica's in Virginia to teach what we now call a Pastry Bootcamp (a nice one), leaving four of these Ginger Fig Streusel Tarts with some Lavender Honey Ice Cream. He ate the coffee-chicory macarons. Go figure. He actually did it (unknowingly) right as we had plenty of the tarts to celebrate our 11th anniversary. Still feels like we are within the first 5 years. Very much loving...

Chai Cake with Honey-Ginger Cream
2009-04-21 07:32:00
For April?s installment of the Cake Slice, the bakers voted for a tea based cake. Chai tea was the cake?s main flavor components. Chai tea literally translates to ?spiced tea?; some of the spices found in chai tea can be pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon. A common practice is to mix the tea with milk to make lattes. That is exactly what the recipe instructed to do.The chai tea bags steeped in warm milk, were cooled and then used in the cake mix. The tea tinted the cake to a lovely mushroom color. The recipe also called for more cinnamon and cardamom, which added pleasant warmth to the cake. The cake itself was light and airy, very much like a chiffon. Keeping with chai tradition, honey sweetens the cake's icing. The recipe took a conventional cream cheese icing and added more ?chai? flavors to it. To start, it called for honey as a sweetener. Make sure to use a very liquid honey to ensure that one gets an icing that will drizzle down the sides of the cake. I do not believe the honey I ...

The United States is considering banning imported honey from China because it is contaminated with the antibiotic Chloramphenicol. Pomegranate Hibiscus Tea & Honey Ginger Yogurt Verrines - A Virtual Hug
2008-12-05 06:36:00
I play well with food. We get along nicely.I can twirl it around, bake it, cut it, stretch it, play it up, play it down.We spend many hours together everyday. Swishing sounds of the whisk play with the silence of my thoughts. We do get along well. Sometimes though I wish I weren't alone in the kitchen.Peeling fruit, brewing tea. Impatiently waiting for that drop of honey to fall from the spoon. Sometimes I wish I had Barbara with me in the kitchen.I know she would sit on the vintage stool by the counter. For about 5 minutes before heading in there with me.I know she would pour us a glass of wine while helping me pick the buttercream from my cheekLike she virtually wiped the tears from my heart last year when I lost someone I had never met but already loved. She would remind me to dance even if only in my head.In fact I believe she'd turn the radio louder and we'd dance right in the middle of spun sugar and flour clouds. Then we would fall loudly on the sofa and laugh...and hug.Barba...
Honey Spoilage

“Liquid honey does not spoil. Because of its high sugar concentration, it kills bacteria by plasmolysis. Natural airborne yeasts cannot become active in it because the moisture content is too low. Natural, raw honey varies from 14% to 18% moisture content. As long as the moisture content remains under 18%, virtually no organism can successfully ...

Honey Raspberry Semifreddo And An Open Letter
2008-08-18 06:34:00
Foreword: I have tossed and turned words for the past couple of days writing this post. I know this is a food blog, but over the past few years that I have written here, I have also shared with you the joys and sorrows of life. It has become more than just desserts since I come every week with stories out the wazoo, so I hope you will allow me to make this post about one person whom I lost and love and celebrate his memory. One person whose passing changed me radically in every thing I do and every way I see things. This is an open letter to my belated brother, one that I start and rewrite every year around the same time, one that will never end being re-written. I also thought about not posting at all, but one of our best memories shared was around dessert and it made sense to me to write it today. If this is not your cup of tea, skip to the recipe part.Dear Thierry,There are many dates forever engraved in my mind. The day you gave me a tiny white watch and a bright fuchsia scarf f...

The honey massage
2008-07-23 09:59:00
Honey massage is type of soft tissue massage that has beneficial healing properties to the body. Besides water and carbohydrates, there are essential micro elements, minerals, enzymes and antibiotics. When eaten those beneficial nutrients are being partly destroyed by the hydrochloric stomach acid, but when applied to the skin they are fully absorbed.PreparationFirst make sure that you are not allergic to honey and try to get a liquid non-crystallized one from a local herbal shop.TechniquePour honey all over the area that will be massaged. Then try to ?unglue? your hands from the area by palm clapping and rubbing motions. Continue until all the honey disappears. If you?ve been doing it right then white-gray skin pallets will form. This indicates that the years accumulated harmful toxins held under the skin are being removed effectively. When you finish wash the skin with sponge and warm water. The healing effects can be felt immediately. Be warned that the skin will remain red for a ...
Bread Baking Day #12: Small Breads - Stout, Oat and Honey Knots
2008-07-21 09:09:00
Aparna from My Diverse Kitchen chose small breads for this month's edition of Bread Baking Day. Small bread means "Brötchen" in German and there is a wide choice. The "Brötchen" I have already baked you'll find here. I like small breads with whole grains or other grains than wheat. This recipe sounded interesting and just right for this event. A pint of stout awaits a slice of bread and butter, this bread combines all. Again I bought some stout and began to bake. While baking a great smell spread over the kitchen. My family couldn't wait to try the knots, for example with roastbeef and for the vegetarians with cheese The recipe was easy to follow, my oats were already browned within 5 minutes, than the oats began to smoke. I used whole meal spelt. There is a video which shows how to make the knots. -=========REZKONV-Recipe - RezkonvSuite v1.4Title: Stout, Oat and Honey KnotsCategories: Bread, YeastYield: 1 Recipe Ingredients 75grams Rolled oats500ml Stout or ot...

Sweet Honey BBQ Wings
2008-06-21 14:12:00
My friend was asked to prepare chicken wings for a bbq. She hasn't been to one for a long time and had no idea what to do. I thought the normal sweet version should not go wrong. After telling her, I had the urge to have some bbq wing too and went to get some wings the next day. I used the oven of course. I won't want to clean the whole house using my hot plate. But instead of preparing one flavour, I did two! Well, because the second one was my son's favourite. ;)Anyway, for the honey sweet wings, I just marinate the wing overnight with 3 part honey and 2 part light soy sauce. Add in 1 part ginger juice if you like. When you are ready to bbq and in my case, bake, just drain the wings but reserve the marinade. Add in a tablespoon of oil or butter and use it for basting.Baste frequently till the wings are throughly cooked. If you are using the oven like I do, bake at 180c for 30 minutes and increase to 200c for 7 minutes to get it slightly brown.I like to squeeze in a lime or too whe...

Honey Scallops with Garlic Broccolini
2008-06-04 20:11:00
cappesante/scallopsRewind to this time two years ago. I was a new homeowner, working out regularly, and spent my Sundays at the Farmer?s market, then at home prepping for a planned menu for the week. Happy as a clam! Over the months that followed, I was in a job I loved, stayed (somewhat) fit and kept losing weight. After a fabulous trip to Eastern Europe last summer, I came home to find I lost more weight and was at the lowest I had been since I got sick. All great right? Right! Then I started my new job last August. After a sprain in one ankle, and three broken bones in the other within 4 months, coupled with a horrendously tumultuous year, I am now at the heaviest I have been since 1999. Icky! With school being out, I am now taking back charge and working to melt my big booty (that follows me in a room ten minutes after the rest of me) away.I began back to the gym this week (the one I have been paying for without seeing the inside but 2 times!) and began cooking again. My shri...

Cooking with Anna: Involtini e Melenzane
2008-06-04 16:54:00
So we are going to go back in time a little with this post. I hope you all don’t mind the time warp this blog sometimes is! It is hard sometimes figuring out when to post what! The life of a food blogger is all about organization…and sometimes the lack thereof. Anyway, as you all know, the week before our wedding, Anna, Roberto’s mom came to stay with us. She is a food blogger and member of The Foodie Blogroll! Her blog AnnaGarau.com features recipes from her native Sardinia. It is a great blog, full of wonderful anecdotes about Sardinia as well as beautiful pictures and she is quite the chef. It is in Italian, so if you want to check it out, and I recommend that you do, use one of those handy dandy translators like this translator from Google. You can even watch a video of traditional Sardinian dancing and singing - something Sardinians are known for. When she was here at our house, she was updating that post and we were having such a good time. I was really ...
The Daring Bakers Sing An Opera: Honey And Lavender Opera
2008-05-28 06:05:00
....and I play the triangle....because I can't carry a tune, which really is funny. No, no, really, I find it really funny that I can't sing or barely remember three notes on a piano considering that thanks to Mr.Tartelette being a musician, I had no problem finding sheet music, a trombone, a flute, a guitar and a violin lying around the house making it easy to take pictures or get inspired when Ivonne and Lisa announced that the Daring Bakers challenge for May was "The Opera". Early on, I started humming Madame Butterfly and Carmen which greatly influenced the decorations on the cake: lovely "tuile/tulip" butterflies for the former and shapely upside down legs in the cake. Mid-month I was not humming so much anymore as I was making the original Opera for hundreds at work. I was on a mission though...The Daring Bakers' Opera this month is dedicated to Barbara of Winos And Foodies. Over the last couple of years, Barbara and I have become closer than just blogging acquaintances oft...

Tuesdays with Dorie: Pecan Honey Sticky Buns
2008-05-27 08:02:00
appiccicoso/stickyMadam Chow of Madam Chow?s Kitchen was the fabulous TWDer who chose Dorie?s Pecan Honey Sticky Buns for this week?s baking gig. I made it Monday afternoon, for which I will try to explain in a sec. But in the meantime, I want to apologize in advance for any confusion because I am aware my posting may be a bit off, so bare with me as I explain. Its 2AM. After picking up the cute 23 year old on the way in to work earlier this evening, I went to the restaurant to wrap up and freeze what I made last night. Mind you, I was in my stilettos and cute shirt that had the"girls" out for a date that was planned later in the evening. With my flats in hand, I went in to do what I do. Then, I hung out, waiting for the time I had to head out. I called at 10 to confirm the date and got - "I am in the middle of somethin'; Let me hit you back." Hit me back? Seriously? Dude, am I 16? I took that as code for go to the bar and grab a tall Crown before heading home. Then, to my pleasant s...
TWD - Pecan Honey Sticky Buns
2008-05-27 01:31:00
Today I am celebrating being 34 years young!  So this past weekend, my weekly TWD baking project was something of an after-thought in light of my other big project: my birthday cake (stay tuned for that story tomorrow). Having made Dorie's brioche recipe when the Brioche Raisin Snails was chosen for TWD's recipe rotation a few months back, I wasn't at all nervous about tackling the brioche which could arguably be the most challenging part of this recipe, and everything was smooth sailing. My only complaint about this recipe, if you could call it that, is a timing issue that relates more to my habits then to the recipe itself. You can have the dough rolled out, smeared, sprinkled, rolled and cut in no time flat; but unless you're an early riser, which I'm not, it's pretty near impossible to get the buns on the table for breakfast/brunch because of the rising time of just under two hours. A luxury problem with a simple solution on my part, n'est-ce pas?

I love going to the supermarket. Really. Just walking down the aisles I get to see the results of millions of dollars of packaging design work. Packages made out of glass, cardboard, aluminum, plastic and materials which I can't even identify in every shape you can imagine and then some with curves, corners and a combination of both. And the colors, what wonderful colors. Deep reds, pastel blues, bright yellow, sea foam green, fuchsia, violet, cyan, lime green, ivory, pink, gold, turquoise, olive, purple, and more and more. Smooth textures, rough textures, bumpy textures. And in those containers are solids, liquids, powders, and syrupy substances. It's an explosion of visual display, all meant to draw your attention, all meant to seduce your hand to reach out and put the product into your shopping cart. Some of the best minds in the design field work on this with the resources of...

Lavender Honey Salt Scrub
2008-05-23 19:37:00
I love this scrub. It is on the thick side but it doesn't leave your skin feeling oily, it feels moisturized and soft. Honey is a natural moisturizer, not only does it add moisture to your skin but it helps to hold it in your skin. Almond oil is one of the best oils to soften the skin. The smell of lavender in this scrub soothes me and I feel well.Container: 8 ounce jarTexture: heavy, thick, snow cone likeIngredients:¾ cup fine sea salt1 tablespoon finely powdered lavender5 tablespoons sweet almond oil1 tablespoon liquid honey6 drops lavender essential oilDirections:-measure salt into bowl-powder dried lavender buds in processor-add to salt and mix well-measure oil into separate container-add honey to oil and stir-add oil and honey to salt-mix well-add lavender essential oil and mix-add to containerIf you are looking for other recipes, check out some of the links in the side bar or check in my archive. I've got a horrible feeling I'm going to have to re-upload all of the photos!  All of them!  It could take me a while so you might have to bear with me.  I was having a week of breaking things - I already told you about the picture frame (thank goodness it wasn't a mirror - can you imagine?!), the bag(s) and then the blog.  I'm not even entirely sure how I did it.  All I know now is that the pictures aren't showing and I don't know how to fix it without re uploading them. But onto happier things!  The doctor has increased my anti depressants to the maximum dose which I was resistant to but have acquiesced because, as the doc pointed out, just because I'm feeling up half of the time, that still leaves the other half when I'm feeling low and anxious.  So I'm ...
One for the men: Honey-Baked Chicken
2008-05-22 23:32:00
OK guys, this one’s for you. I’ve had a few single men test it, and they report it’s easy, cheap, healthy, and tastes great to boot! Best of all, it requires just three ingredients: Wheat flakes cereal, honey mustard, and a boneless skinless chicken breast. So turn on the basketball game and the oven, and get ...
