2007-12-02 11:57:00 According to this, the very worst place in the world in which to be a woman is Pakistan (and not, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Afghanistan). I guess it depends a little on where in Pakistan a woman happens to find herself - with the tribal areas bordering on Afghanistan being about as close to hell as you can imagine - but the situation is steadily deteriorating everywhere. About 1,000 women are victims of honour killings in Pakistan every year, and it is believed the number of incidents is underreported: Sources in the ministry of women development said over 1,000 women become victims of "karo-kari" or honour killings each year. Women are burnt, raped, strangled and or just beaten to death each year in the country. The figures "reported in various surveys are gross underestimation of the real cases", said a report in the Business Recorder newspaper. 2007-12-01 15:37:00 Another victim of an "honour killing," this time in the Punjab province of Pakistan, where a girl was killed by her axe-wielding father for the crime of having had an affair (perhaps) with a local boy: The girl was killed after her father, Farooq Khan Baloch, became suspicious that his daughter was having an affair with Amjad, a youngster in Jhang tehsil in Punjab province. Seeing them together, Farooq along with relatives Sher Khan, Asghar Khan and Riaz Khan, axed the girl to death, while the boy managed to escape, the Dawn daily reported. The story doesn't mention how old the girl was. 2007-07-01 16:51:00 ?HONOUR killing? is still in vogue in some parts of the world. If a girl or woman talks with a man in secrecy, then she is killed, some times by her own brother. So, I ask these men, why only women are being punished? Why not the men involved in the affairs too? They are also totally involved in such affairs. Islam strictly forbids this. Still, in many Muslim countries, this practice is followed. On the one side, these countries claim that they are following a democratic system, and accord freedom to individuals, but, on the other, practices like honour killings continue.
