Traditional hookahs face extinction in Kerala
2007-06-12 17:27:00 Due to high cost and fluctuation in the rate of the dollar, the famous hookahs of Koyilandy, a small town in the Kerala's Calicut District, is facing the threat of being extinct. Popularly known as 'Malabar' hookahs, they are mainly exported to the gulf countries, mainly to Saudi Arabia. Moosari, a special coppersmith community specialises in making these Malabar hookahs. K P Nishad, a manufacturer and exporter says that the export business has been hit due to the fluctuation in the dollar rates. The cost of raw materials has also increased. "We are running the business just because it is our traditional work. Otherwise, we would have stopped it," said Nishad. History of Hookahs
2007-06-01 09:17:00 The origins of the hookah come from the north western provinces of India, along the border of Pakistan in Rajasthan and Gujarat, nearly a millennia back. These hookahs were simple, primitive and rugged in design, usually made from a coconut shell base and tube with a head attached. They were for smoking opium and hashish. The hookah made its way through the Persian Kingdom, which included Pakistan, Afghanistan, much of Middle Asia and Arab parts of Northern Africa. In the middle-east, hookah architecture evolved to ornate crystal and earthenware. Later, brass and steel were introduced and it didn't take along for the hookahs to become a form of artistic expression, and a form of social smoking.
Paris: History, Hookahs, and Hammams
2007-04-03 16:54:00 Photo by Joi La grande Mosquée de Paris, built in 1926, is a Paris must see. Constructed in traditional North African design, the mosque is a stunning piece of foreign architecture planted among rows of typical French buildings. It serves as a reminder of both the French colonial past and France’s substantial Muslim community. Contained within the enormous structure is the Café de la Mosquée, a charming space where patrons can relax with a delicious mint tea among sprouting fig trees, a fountain, and billowing hookah smoke. The café attracts mature, laid-back crowds and contains a certain authenticity rarely found in run-of-the-mill hookah joints. The cafe is open from noon to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. La grande Mosquée de Paris is located at 2, bis place du puits de l’Ermite. Metro: Place Monge, Jussieu, Censier. Bus: 89, 47. Admission: €3. The mosque is open from 9 a.m. until noon and 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday through Thursday.
