See this movie: 'Rebuilding Hope' Friday at Portage Theater
2009-11-20 00:29:00
Tomorrow night you can see "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" and be treated to a lot of screaming fans and a pretty boring movie. Or you could head to the Portage Theater for a screening of the documentary "Rebuilding Hope," which has an awfully earnest name but certainly earns the right to be emotional. The 8 p.m. screening's $10 and features a post-film discussion with director Jen Marlowe and the film's stars, including Chicago resident Garang Mayuol. See my review below and let us know what you think of the movie."Rebuilding Hope"***1/2 (out of five)This documentary, about three "Lost Boys" returning to Sudan after fleeing 20 years ago, is a bit slow and often academic to the point of feeling...

Hope On the Line
2009-11-03 00:55:00
It was important for the defense to perform how they performed Sunday, opponent aside.  If it only served to get the taste of the Cincinnati Bungle out of their collective minds, it was well worth it.  The Browns stink - nobody disputes that - but the defense didn't mail in the effort and dominated the ballgame.Sunday provides a real test for the unit at the season's crossroad. When the Arizona Cardinals are at their best, even without Anquan Boldin, they can dominate defenses through the air.  Kurt Warner is one of the best pure throwers in the game and there's not a receiver out there that Larry Fitzgerald takes a backseat to.  If their o-line holds, the Bears will be...
Let's Hope The Chicago Bears Don't Have "Fat Little Girlfrie
2009-10-30 18:58:00
After Saturday's loss to Texas A & M, Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach blamed not only his players, but their "fat little girlfriends" too.      &-nbsp;    &n-bsp;     Let's ignore the fact that the terms "fat" and "little" are contradictory (are the girlfriends short but stocky? petite but pudgy?) and move on to Leach's complaint. According to the head ball coach, the players took their game against Texas A & M for granted because "their fat little girlfriends were telling them what they wanna hear, which is how great you are. And how easy it's gonna be." This weekend the 3-3 Chicago Bears take on the 1-6 Cleveland Browns, led by the hapless Derek Anderson. While the Bears are doing their...
I Hope Jay Cutler Is Wrong
2009-10-30 14:45:00
Freudian slip? Simple grammar error? Self-fulfilling prophecy? Whatever the case may be, I just hope Jay's latest tweet does not come true. If the Bears don't win this week Bears fans will be hotter than 100 Arizona suns....

Cubs Live Game Thread: Help Us Tyler Colvin, You're Our Only Hope
2009-09-24 00:11:00
(wipes tears from eyes) Oh, that clip never gets old. As you guys know (and btw, sorry about that), millertime and I have been constantly sparring over . . . a certain Cub for the last several months, on a seemingly interminable basis. I've finally run out of gass on this issue, and I desire to never discuss it again. So, by way of an olive branch, I'm giving millertime the Star Wars-themed game thread he's longed for. By way of an even BIGGER peace offering, I give millertime the story of Milton's time with the Chicago Cubs (as millertime sees it): Lou: For over a thousand generations, the Chicago Cubs were the guardians of peace and justice...
BIGHOLLYWOOD.com: White House Uses Nat?l Endowment for the Arts To Advance
2009-09-21 20:42:00
Here’s the news Dan was referring to earlier today. The NEA [National Endowment for the Arts] and the White House did encourage a handpicked, pro-Obama arts group to address politically controversial issues under contentious national debate. That fact is irrefutable. This practice has never been the historical role of the NEA. The NEA?s role is to support ...
New Hope for Steam Power?
2009-09-21 14:37:00
Ever since I visited Pennsylvania's Strasburg Railroad as a child, I've been interested in steam locomotives - as much for the rugged beauty and romance they seem to convey, as for the amazing fact that these massive machines worked at all. That water, when held under the right conditions, is capabl

There's Always Hope
2009-09-16 22:30:00
I know the Cubs were counted out weeks ago, but if you take a gander at the standings, you will realize this thing isn't over yet. The division race is going to be very difficult, but St. Louis is playing sub-par ball right now for the first time in a long time, so maybe this weekend will be a good time to at least make them sweat just a little bit. More pressing is the wild card race, where the Rockies have let a bunch of teams hang around. I think the best thing the Cubs can hope for is that Colorado fades, so they can set their sights on the Giants, the only team among the remaining contenders...
3G Spectrum Auction Fixed For 7th Dec – Lets Hope It Doesn’t Ge
2009-09-15 06:58:00
Well if the DoT and the Government had stuck to its promise the above date of 7th December would have been the actual roll out date for 3G across all operators but (sigh!) promises are meant to be broken. WATBlog has tracked the 3G auction saga very closely and we have informed you each time the auction has been delayed, delayed, delayed and again delayed! and even more delay! Phew! So much delay made us question if the government realized the importance of 3G? So much delay that we did one of our most detailed posts on the 3G Saga (must read if you ask me!).  Finally recently the 3G auction base price was fixed at 3500 crores. This meant that an auction date would be announced soon. Now a New Auction Date Is Fixed The new auction date fixed is 7th of December 2009 (yes it was to be in 2008 now its 2009! iPhone 3G has come and gone and now its iPhone3GS!). The government will issue a notice inviting applications from interested bidders on Oct. 26, with the final date for receiving...

White Sox Weekend: Hope Rollercoaster
2009-09-14 06:39:00
Due to their .500 record and time running out, the White Sox need wins, regardless of the quality of their opponent. Even going into a weekend where they're facing one of the AL's best (Angels) and the Tigers are facing one of the AL's worst (Blue Jays), the Sox needed to make up ground, no excuses. And with the Tigers dropping two of three, they had their chance....
Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions
2009-09-13 00:03:00
In 1993, Mazzy Star?s Hope Sandoval released the dream-pop gem ?Fade Into You,? a dusty, lilting ballad that served as the soundtrack to make-out sessions for Converse-clad alterna-dorks everywhere. The notoriously reclusive Californian hasn?t cracked the mainstream since, opting to release a few records here and there with various projects. But there?s good news: Sandoval is back. With her band Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions (which features My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig), Sandoval is gearing up to release her second record since the act?s 2001 debut Bavarian Fruit Bread. The new disc Through the Devil Softly ? out September 15th ? is a lovely, 11-track collection of narcotic, folk tunes centered by Sandoval?s breathy, irresistible seductive croon. So what took so long? ?I don?t really notice the time,? says Sandoval coyly. ?We don?t keep track of the days and months. And the years.?Sandoval and Ó Cíosóig cut the disc with their crack band over the last few years ...

Renewed hope for Pakistan
2009-08-23 23:28:00
For the past couple of years, there hasn't been a lot of positive news coming out of Pakistan and although it has remained quite insulated from the effects of the global recession, things haven't been too rosy. I was recently reading a nice article on Dawn titled Silly Season in Pakistan that explored the possibility of ridding the country of the current president (don't get your hopes up) and the following part caught by attention: The macroeconomic indicators have stabilised; inflation is down; the power crisis will ease now that summer is over; suicide bombings are down; a degree of normality is returning to Swat; Baitullah Mehsud is dead and his headquarters in South Waziristan is under siege; the judicial crisis is over; a truce, albeit an uneasy one, is holding in Punjab; the American demands to ‘do more’ against the Taliban are muted; drone strikes are less of a political hot potato; relations with India are edging towards a post-Mumbai phase; parliament is upping it...

Saregama Pins Hope On Digital Content – Does Digital Selling Really W
2009-08-17 09:37:00
Saregama was always perceived as an acquisition target for R-ADAG group after repeated investment by Anil Ambani’s investment arm. The Goenka group company has largely seen a stagnant growth through out the economic and digital boom in India. Now it seems Saregama is on a changeover track as Business Standard reports that it has stepped up its effort to drive major revenues from digital medium. BS further reports that is targeting upto 65 percent revenue contribution from its digital content in next five years. The company in tie-up with different telcos would also be launching a website to leverage its digital content and is also pursuing content tie-up with hardware companies like Nokia. The site from Saregama’s fold will have a library of two million songs and it expects to garner anywhere between 50 lacs – 1 crore from each of its handset tie-ups. The company also expects to lower revenue contribution from the physical format to 10 per cent from 40 per c...

Effective Depression Treatment Lends Hope to Many
2009-07-31 15:40:00
Depression treatment must be a holistic process. Depression itself is a jointly physical and psychological disease, one that infects the bodies of its victims as surely as it does their minds. No matter what causes depression, under those circumstances it should go without saying that no depression victim can be healed without achieving both physiological and emotional wellness. To settle for anything less is simply unacceptable. Some depression treatment facilities in Los Angeles target either the physical or psychological dimension of the disease while ignoring the other. This is an enormous mistake. The fact of the matter is that depression treatment is an enormously delicate process, and can only be successful if it?s administered in exactly the right way. From chronic depression to mood disorders, if you?re serious about getting better, it?s vital that you get help from people who can give you the right kind of support.

India?s election gives some hope
2009-07-05 20:28:00
The Indian election looks somewhat promising for the most disadvantaged. At least there are now seven Ministers in the new government who are not religious believers! Despite this, ...

No Hope for Closed Sugar Mills of Punjab
2009-06-10 04:17:00
Government Decision All hopes of revival have ended for the closed sugar mills of Punjab. Badal led SAD-BJP alliance government has decided to sell the land of six closed sugar mills to the Punjab State Federation of Co-operative House Building Society for the construction of housing colonies instead of reviving these sick units. With it the dreams of thousands of employees and mill laborers of resumption of work have dashed. It must be learnt that former Co-operative minister late Captain Kanwaljeet Singh had dreamt of reviving the sick mills within the time frame of three months but his dreams too have been broken. Co-operative department has 15 sugar mills out of which, Faridkot, Jeera, Budhlada, Jagraon, Tarantaran and Rakhra based sugar mills have been closed for a long time because of government?s indifference. All the workers of these mills have been left jobless. Neither they have got their salaries for a long time nor have they been transferred to other...

A sign of the times? I hope not
2009-05-23 04:43:00
I don’t have a lot of experience in signs. I know some of the basic guidelines, like for billboards (simple message, under five words) and a few others. What I am pretty comfortable with is the English language — especially in writing (okay, typing). If you are into signs or any type of similar public display, let me offer a little PSA with a couple “don’ts” for you. The first one (right) is a simple improper use of apostrophe. Use apostrophe s — ’s — only to show that something possesses something else. Don’t use an apostrophe because you don’t like the way an s looks at the end of a word. Unfortunately, there are plenty other examples of apostrophe abuse. The other one (below) also is pretty basic mistake. Even my 2nd grade son knows that when you write or read, you do so left to right, or up to down. Not, bottom to top. (If you happen to recognize this one, please know that it was done by a volunteer parent, not the scho...
17 years...Yet we wait with hope for "with this ring I thee wed."

Today is a special day, a day filled with anticipation of a beautiful tomorrow. As I have shared in the past, so shall I share today, that tomorrow is my Anniversary day. Tomorrow will herald the 17th year since I fell for my love. Seventeen years of bliss...With rings and promises shared between us.Seventeen years of dedication, devotion, and dreams of the future. Seventeen years ago I pledged my heart to a man whom inexplicably captured my attention and demanded quietly that I stop and pay attention to what stands vulnerable before me. Seventeen years have passed like pages blowing in the wind, fluttering and waving frantically so as to be noticed and read. I have read every page, told every story, and to this day; seventeen years later, I remain enraptured at out tale of love for the cast was so well set.I think of him every second of the day. I think of him with a fond smile when he is near and when he is not. I am comforted, challenged, and committed by him to us. I am i...
