Cutting the Budget for Hospice (And Hoping You Won?t Notice)
2008-05-05 11:13:00 I love hospice, because I’m old enough to remember when dying patients ended up in hospitals, or we docs would try to make house calls and try to get neighbors to help give adequate care in their homes. But with hospice, nurses helped me care for my patients by checking them frequently at home, and ...
Hospice Care
2008-03-17 02:34:00 Imagine that a person actually knows that he or she is living his or her final days. Imagine the situation the family will be going through and imagine the pressure on the medical doctors, nurses and physicians who are taking care of that person. This situation that accounts for such an ailment that cannot be cured is termed as terminal ailment. Such terminally ill patents need to be given special care during there last time. This treatment is referred to as hospice care. The main objective of the hospice care is to provide all the comfort, the pleasure and the dignity to the patient who will be no more in sometime. Apart from handling the patient more important is to handle the family members by providing them the support needed at that time. Almost 99% of the times hospice care is provided at home so that the family members can enjoy the most natural time together with the patient, and what else can be more soothing than being at home. The main objective of this specialized treatm...

Gordon Brown's - NHS Constitution Nightmare.
2008-01-01 16:15:00 Is there a word that instils greater feelings of dread amongst public sector workers than "reform?" That's what Gordon Brown is planning for the NHS this year with his new NHS Constitution (or is it a treaty? - It seems he can't tell the difference between the two). Anyone who is involved with the NHS must be thinking "bloody hell (or possibly something more profane), here we go again." Why can't politicians just leave things alone? They are just like bloody Admirals. When you have just got near to getting to grips with the last set of pointless changes, some idiot from the "good ideas club" comes along and changes everything again just to prove they are doing something to earn their wages.Dr Michael Dixon, chairman of the NHS Alliance, said: "A constitution is not as big an issue as it once was." We've had the NHS Plan and there are some fairly radical reforms going through, like practice-based Commissioning, and getting the implementation of these things right is the absolute ...

Putting Mama on Hospice
2007-10-24 09:01:00 It's mama's time to die. It's not because of the terrible medical care she's received. It's just that she cannot rally back one more time. I met with the hospice people today. I explained that they didn't need to "sell" me on the concept of hospice. Before I contacted them, I had done everything possible to see if mama could survive--with a quality of life that was worth living--and she can't.It's time to let her go so she can join my father who's been waiting for her in heaven for 18 years and 8 months. Their marriage was a match made in heaven, and that's where she'll join him--for eternity. For the rest of this week--in tribute to my mother, Marjorie L. Schwartz--I will share some of her poems with you and an essay and a few poems I've written to her. This afternoon, I wrote the short poem below while I sat on a bench on the bluffs overlooking the beach, near Casa del Mar, where my mother lives. Writing it made me cry because I knew my mother would get a kick out of it...

Hospice, Radio and Websites
2006-09-07 07:03:01 I?m almost breathless with almost too much work, but beautiful, exciting work. That is the work for Bzoo radio. Since I am gone all next week to visit my parents in North Carolina I?ve had to prepare for and engineer 6 shows. This is also the week I published Gypsy Mag 3. It looked perfect and all the links were correct and then I published it and the links went haywire. How embarrassing and weird! I put in a distress message to my hosting company but they are in England and it was probably the middle of the night and no one was answering. I woke up at 3:00 a.m (which is per usual lately) and saw my first attempt at an answer. We emailed back and forth until 6:00 a.m. Finally things got squared away. For all of this and I am grateful...and tired.I had a death this week, which is always poignant and one patient whose family revoked him for aggressive testing because one of the children just could not believe that all of the patient?s problems were due to the disease proces...
NEPAL: HIV Hospice For Gay And Transgender Men Offers Hope
2006-05-17 04:57:00 There's no signboard outside the simple white-washed building at the end of the road - and neighbours have little idea of who its occupants are. But in this traditional Hindu society, where open discussion about HIV/AIDS remains largely taboo, that's not surprising.Behind the well-trimmed lawn and flower beds of the two-story building lies Nepal's only hospice dedicated to caring for men who have sex with men (MSM) infected with HIV/AIDS, a particularly marginalised group in this impoverished nation of 28 million.Funded by the Elton John Foundation and French NGO Sidaction, the hospice, located in a working class residential district of the capital Kathmandu, provides one of the few rays of hope for MSM members living with AIDS.
