Head of Sai Baba Mega Dollar Hospital At Puttaparthi Resigns. Others Quitti
2011-06-26 03:34:00 I only met Dr A.N. Safaya once, when I lengthily interviewed him at the Sri Sathya Sai Superspeciality Hospital for the Puttaparthi-based magazine 'Spiritual Impressions', which is distributed internationally. My impression was of a gracious, deeply dedicated man. He is highly respected in India and abroad in the medical profession. I venture to predict that, given a probing government enquiry into the circumstances of Sathya Sai Baba's death, the circumstances of Dr Safaya's resignation, and of other medical and nursing staff at the Sai hospital, will show that forces on the Sathya Sai Central Trust, and certain of their agents, have been grossly unscrupulous. And, more widely, criminal. There are very serious allegations arising in news coverage that those around Sathya Sai Baba prior to his admission to the hospital where he died on 25 April withheld vital medical information from Dr Safaya and other medical experts in attendance. From other flows of information we are rec...
Nurses on drugs. How many patients have suffered?
2009-07-28 05:59:00 Would it surprise anyone to learn that drug use is widespread among hospital employees? I think not. There is even a new TV show called Nurse Jackie, whose main character played by Edie Falco, is clearly addicted to prescription drugs and trades sex for drugs with the hospital pharmacist. The creators of the show have made the Nurse Jackie character the most competent person in the show's fictional hospital. That's all well and good when it comes to creating an edgy adult TV drama, but not in the real world. Real addicts are only competent in their own minds. Meet Nurse Melony. According to a recent Los Angeles Times article exposing the failure of the California Nursing Board Drug Diversion Program to protect us from nurses on drugs, Nurse Melony Currier is a poster child for nurses on drugs. In one episode, Nurse Melony passed out in her car the morning of her second day on a new job at Starpoint Surgery Center in Studio City, California. Once awakened, she was escorted to a ...

2009-01-28 03:54:00 Lionel Ruff wrote a new blog post: Local schools, hospitals feel nursing shortage In this economy, the concept of employers competing for employees seems like a far cry from reality, but this happens every day in the health care profession. As has been the case for several years, America is experiencing a critical shortage of nurses. While local educators and hospitals say there has been significant abatement of the ...
Hospitals Increasingly Deport Sick Immigrants
2008-08-04 21:48:00 The New York Times reports US hospitals are increasingly deporting seriously injured or ill immigrants who cannot find nursing homes willing to accept them without insurance. A total of 1,100 pediatricians were surveyed by mail and asked to name up to five centers they believe to be most successful with difficult cases in their specialty. They were chosen at random from the database of the American Board of Medical Specialties, 200 for general pediatrics and 150 for each of the six specialties. Cash Before Chemo: Hospitals Get Tough
2008-04-28 19:04:00 It's getting rough out there for sick people. A article in today's Wall Street Journal describes a growing practice of hospitals demanding payment up front before giving treatment. Demands of more than $100,000 have been made for chemotherapy. The article focuses on the experience of Lisa Kelly who was diagnosed with leukemia. One day, Mrs. Kelly says, nurses wouldn't change the chemotherapy bag in her pump until her husband made a new payment. She says she sat for an hour hooked up to a pump that beeped that it was out of medicine, until he returned with proof of payment. Patients in a hospital's business office now wonder if the clerk sitting opposite them is going to permit their cancer to be treated. Surgery for lung cancer better att teaching hospitals
2008-03-05 00:00:00 Patients cared for by hospitals with residents in training have a 17 percent less chance of dying after lung cancer surgery compared with patients undergoing surgery at non-teaching hospitals, as per results of a Johns Hopkins study reported in the recent issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Theres a public perception that teaching hospitals can be dangerous places because of training issues, and concerns are frequently voiced by patients and echoed in the press regarding a fear of physicians-in-training practicing on them, says the lead author of the paper, Robert Meguid, M.D., a surgical resident at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The data from our study help refute these fears........
Hospital parking fees - The English lose out again.
2008-03-03 09:11:00 Why are we English always the poor relations when it comes to public services? Today the BBC are telling us that Hospitals in Wales will be bringing in free parking from the 1st of April. This follows an announcement by the Scottish health secretary that a maximum of £3 will be charged in their hospital car parks. Will this happen in England? will it hell, not as long as Gordon Brown is in charge. This is a chart showing the parking fees at my local hospital in Portsmouth. This is nothing more than a sickness tax. What really disgusts me is the fact that Doctors and Nurses have to pay for the privilege of parking at work.

Why do we so readily accept the unacceptable? Ambulances.
2008-02-18 09:44:00 Patients are left waiting in ambulances for hours. I'm sure that in years gone bye, the shocking news that patients are being left waiting in ambulances so that NHS Trusts can hit government targets would have caused an outcry. However, we have become so accustomed to this kind of pathetic mismanagement of our services that this story will be forgotten by tomorrow. An estimated 60,000 patients have had to wait at least an hour before being allowed through hospital doors. Of course the main cause of this is the fact that more people are going to A&E because thanks to another government cock-up: getting a GP to see you at home is almost impossible. The government have replied to these claims in their usual fashion: spin and lies. They say that these figures are incorrect and that 60,000 aren?t all that many anyway. So who's lying? The doctors, ambulance crews and the ambulance union, or the government?I know who my money would be on.Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

Hospital Parking: Scotland takes another dig at Gordon Brown.
2008-02-17 09:44:00 Do you think they are doing on purpose? It seems that every one of those annoyances we have to put up with in England is being dealt with in Scotland. This time it's Hospital parking fees. Scotland's Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has announced that anyone visiting any hospital in will pay a maximum of £3 for the day. Is Alex Salmond doing it to wind up Gordon Brown? Is he intentionally making Gordon look bad? If he is, he's doing a good job of it. The list of wind-ups is growing longer: Tuition fees, Police pay, nurses pay, School meals, life saving drugs, toll roads and many many more.I'm pro- English Parliament, but I don't hold what Alex Salmond is doing for his people against him, or Scotland. It's not Alex's fault that he is able to provide the Scottish with services we are denied in England. That's down to Gordon Brown.Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

Labour - Tough on manipulating the figures relating to Hospital infections
2008-01-30 13:34:00 If you wanted to hit your target for reducing the number of Hospital infections, you would use the figures gathered directly after a £50m deep clean. And that is exactly what Labour's health Secretary Alan Johnson intends to do. Not exactly honest is it, but what do expect from a minister already in the spotlight for dodgy donations to his deputy leadership campaign? Both the Conservatives and the Lib Dems are attacking this brazen manipulation of the figures. However Alan Johnson is defending his government's position: "First the Tories say our deep clean is a gimmick and now they say it will help us achieve our target for cutting MRSA rates."Rather than trying to score political points they should back our tough action and extra investment to tackle infections and improve cleanliness."There's a damn good reason that the Conservatives are calling the deep clean a gimmick. Andrew Large, the director general of the Cleaning and Support Services Association said: "What we have seen...

Militants' ransom demand forces private hospitals to close in Manipur

Three private health clinics, Imphal Hospital, Shanti Hospital and Langol View Charitable Clinic bore the brunt of militancy threat last week. These hospitals have been shut down, as they could not meet the ransom demand of underground groups. In a state where the private nursing homes and hospitals provide the best hope for better treatment, their closure has angered the people. "Medication was stopped as the doctors didn't turned up. This is not the first time in Manipur. It has been a regular feature," claimed Shera Devi, a patient. Muktarani Devi, another patient, added, "Even in war time, hospitals are not targeted. But in Manipur, there is a sense of fear." The state has altogether 539 primary health care institutions, 13 hospitals including one state level hospital (JN Hospital) as referral centre and seven district hospitals.
