HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER First Look: Becki Newton Boards “The Drunk Train”
2012-01-23 20:57:00 If watching actress Becki Newton make questionable decisions as a result of alcohol with a hilarious and talented gay man at her side is something that you’ve been dearly missing from your small screen since the unfortunate demise of UGLY BETTY, well, have we got a few first look photos for you. And while it’s not quite the reunion you (okay, we) have been hoping for (Paging Broadway’s Michael Urie, line one), it may in fact be the next best thing. For starting February 13th, Newton will kick off a multi-episode arc on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER as Quinn, a serious love interest for Barney in what Executive Producer Carter Bays characterizes as “as a big arc and a big story, She’s [Newton] an important player in these character’s.” More first look photos of which can be found after the jump. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER airs Mondays at 8PM on CBS (CityTV in Canada) and stars Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan. ...

Winter TCA Press Tour 2012: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Live Blog
2012-01-11 21:12:00 11:03AM: CBS Publicity kicks off the HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER panel featuring actors Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel and Showrunners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas by touting the fact that the show is enjoying its best ratings ever. What’s more, it remains the youngest skewing show on the Network. 11:05AM: Will HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER follow in LOST’s footsteps by setting an end date? “We’ve talked about it, but it’s not a high priority for us,” admits Carter Bays. “It’s hard for us to say on May 14 two-thousand-and-whatever we’ll officially be out of ideas.” Adds Segel, “We have to say if the Mayans were right also, you might meet the mother on December 21, 2012.” 11:07AM: Fun Fact: Having hit 150 episodes, Lily Aldrin will have surpassed BUFFY’s Willow Rosenberg as Allyson Hannigan’s longest running character. PARKS AND RECREATION! COMMUNITY! REVENGE! HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER! The TV Add
2011-12-09 20:15:00 This week in Awesome: Not only did PARKS AND RECREATION have Leslie taking a page from FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Coach Eric Taylor (“Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose”) in an effort to inspire the troops, the episode’s final scene that saw her hard-working staff dedicate the next few months of their lives to her election campaign was this close to having us standing up and cheer, “I serve at the pleasure of the President.” You’re a Mean One, Mr. NBC: Indeed, nothing says cruel and unusual punishment like forcing fans to watch another exemplary episode of COMMUNITY all the while knowing full well that this may be the last time we see it on the air for God knows how long! Most Controversial Moment: Despite the internet being fiercely divided over this week’s highly contentious episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER that removed the possibility of Robin ever having biological children of her very own, there is one thing anyone would be hard-...

Show Most Deserving Of A Rescue Effort: NBC’s COMMUNITY is the thinking man’s sitcom and the dumb dude’s chance to feel smart. 2011-11-04 18:14:00 Most A-mah-zing News: HAPPY ENDINGS got a full-season pick-up. Worst Liar: Kris Jenner tried convincing people that the Kardashian clan didn’t profit from Kim’s ill-fated wedding to Kris Jenner. Riiiiiggghhht. And those crazy kids were in it for love, not publicity. Oddest News: So when ABC announced A VERY GAGA THANKSGIVING, did anyone else flashback to the infamously bad STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL? Best Explanation Of A Lose/Win Scenario: Although Brian Williams’ new show ROCK CENTER had fewer viewers than THE PLAYBOY CLUB — the canceled show which it replaced — it’s still a positive for NBC given how much cheaper the news hour is to produce. Biggest Mystery: How Katie Holmes continues to get hired after proving time-and-again that the artist formerly known as Joey Potter simply cannot act her way out of a paper bag, or in the case of this week’s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, a slutty pumpkin. Channel Surfing: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, HOMELAND, THE GOOD WIFE & More!
2011-11-01 21:19:00 Just when FX thought that AMERICAN HORROR STORY had helped them corner the market on truly terrifying television came last night’s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER guest appearance by Katie Holmes. Yet rather than ad insult to injury by joining what pretty much amounts to the entirety of the internet — which for those keeping track all but reached a consensus at precisely 8:28PM eastern standard time that last night’s performance by Holmes made Britney Spears look talented — we thought we’d focus on the positive that was Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders. Which is to say, Robin and Barney’s “B” story that had everybody’s favorite Canadian export chiding the Legen.. wait for it… dary one upon discovering that he was one-fourth Canadian was everything the much-anticipated return of Holmes’ Slutty Pumpkin wan’t: Funny, romantic and worth our time. How I Met Your Mother: "Landmarks"
2011-05-10 03:34:00 How I Met Your Mother adores delivering themes in metaphor form (think back, for just one example, to "Milk," one of the strongest episodes from season one). This can be a double-edged sword. When it works, it's both sensible and sly, a moral that you don't quite see coming. When it doesn't work, when the analogy is too obvious or too forced, the whole story suffocates under the weight of each clunky line that drives the point home....
How I Met Your Mother: "The Perfect Cocktail"
2011-05-03 04:36:00 Future Ted has always emphasized that the story of how he met his wife is also the story of how he became the man he needed to be to meet her. Partly this is out of the writers' need to keep the conceit of a hit show going, partly out of those writers' intrinsic romantic nature. They've always been less interested in the destination of the show's title than in the journey of their five main characters through early adulthood. And, to the extent that those stories have been relatable and the cast engaging, I've mostly shared their preference....
How I Met Your Mother: "The Exploding Meatball Sub"
2011-04-12 03:55:00 The challenge the writers of How I Met Your Mother have faced with the Ted-Zoey relationship - since it's established from the outset that she isn't The Mother - is how to keep it interesting even though we know it's doomed. For a while, that challenge was ably met in the person of Kyle MacLachlan, whose eccentric, cuckolded Captain was more than amusing enough to make up for Zoey's two-dimensional characterization. In "The Exploding Meatball Sub," the show plays on that foreknowledge by exploring why two people can be so drawn to each other, yet so wrong for each other. This was a recurring theme throughout Ted and Robin's relationship, and while the Ted-Zoey pairing can never hope to match...
How I Met Your Mother: "Legendaddy"
2011-03-22 03:49:00 As we all learned in English 101, "plot" is what a story is about, and "theme" is what a story is about. The plot of How I Met Your Mother - a man tells the story of meeting his wife, with plenty of detours - has never been as important as the theme - a group of mid-twenty-somethings grow into the adulthood that makes marriage and parenthood possible. What drives the show is the notion that this process never really ends; there's no finish line clearly marked "GROWN-UP," no certificate you get when all your training is complete. There will always be gaps to fill in, some of them more significant than others.Barney has a bevy of adulthood gaps, and...

Channel Surfing: HOUSE, HEROES, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER & THE BIG BANG TH
2009-09-22 19:18:00 Call us crazy, but last night’s two-hour season premiere of HOUSE that had the good doctor (not to mention us viewers) stuck in Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital for what felt like an eternity alongside some very talented guest stars (including Franka Potente, Andre Braugher and Broadway’s Lin-Manuel Miranda) was an epic fail. Okay sure, Laurie now has the pre-requisite ‘Very Special Episode’ for next year’s Emmy reel already in the can. And yes, the show, which does tend to become somewhat repetitious did switch things up from the standard mystery illness of the week. But for our money, last night is not how you start off a season. Personal character journeys that leave supporting favorites such as Cuddy, Chase and Cameron in the wings should be reserved for mid-season or at the very least, sweeps episodes. Not a season opener where viewers have waited very patiently all summer long for the return of their favorite differential diagnosticians. While Rober...

Countdown to Fall: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
2009-08-19 20:00:00 I took four seasons (and arguably a little help from time-slot lead-in THE BIG BANG THEORY) but audiences (and best of all, the Emmy nominating committee) finally discovered what this TV Addict has known for years now: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER = Awesome! What’s more, it’s about to get even awesomer (and yes, if Barney uses it, it is in fact a word!) “For a long time the mother was in this big vast ocean of New York City and we ended the season with Ted teaching at Columbia University,” teased executive producer Craig Thomas in a recent interview with EW’s Michael Ausiello. “Having Ted literally in the same room as the mother has added a great suspense element in the writing,” And speaking of suspense, what about the relationship fans have really been buzzing about all summer long, that of Robin and Barney, whose will-they-or-won’t-they status was left somewhat up the air after last spring’s finale. Well, judging from a third episode...

Lessons Learned From Last Night’s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
2009-03-31 19:38:00 1. Not everything aboot about Canada is funny: Look, we’re the first recognize the genius that is Robin Sparkles, and really, who doesn’t love the occasional joke at Canada’s expense. But last night’s observation by Robin that the original inspiration for Lethal Weapon were the fictional Canadian duo of McElroy and LaFleur may have been the hat that broke the proverbial Mountie’s back. Because if you ask us, there is such a thing as one too many jokes at Canada’s expense. 2. It’s about the journey, stupid: Amidst the hilarity that was Barney doing shots in the bar with strangers, you may have missed show-runners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas’ clever use of Robin to voice their inner-monologue, when she waxed poetically to Ted that, “You can’t just jump to the end, the journey is the best part.” In other-words, stop asking about who the mother is. 3. Jason Segal’s dedication to his craft knows no bounds: Or at le...

Random Musings: BETTER OF TED, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER & MELROSE PLACE
2009-03-19 16:03:00 As if this week’s years-in-development-million-do-llar rebrand of NBC Universal’s Sci-Fi Channel to SyFy (a name that was coincidentally coined by friend of theTVaddict.com Michael Hinman over a decade ago) wasn’t evidence enough that Hollywood has officially run out of original ideas, check out these two eerily similar marketing campaigns for ABC’s new comedy BETTER OFF TED and ABC Family’s signature series GREEK. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Hilarity You May Have Missed
2009-03-17 18:50:00 One of our favorite things about HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER — well, aside from the awesomeness that is Barney Stinson — is that like LOST, the show rewards savvy viewers for paying attention. Which is why we thought we’d share with you some of the laugh-out-loud moments you might have missed whilst immersed in Ted’s emotional tête-à-tête with Lily upon discovering that she had in fact been sabotaging many of his relationships over the years after they failed to pass her very-own “porch test.” (more…)

Good News, Bad News: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, Ashley Jensen & Reality TV
2009-03-12 01:16:00 Good News: UGLY BETTY’s Ashley Jensen is finally being given something interesting to do. Bad News: On the new CBS pilot ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE. [Source: EW] Good News: As a result of the current economic crisis, TV watching is on the rebound. Bad News: Make that reality TV watching, with ABC’s DANCING WITH THE STARS, NBC’s THE BIGGEST LOSER and the CW’s AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL returning to boffo ratings. DOLLHOUSE, TERMINATOR and CHUCK, not so much. [Source: USAToday] Good News: CBS has ordered four more scripts of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER for the 2009-10 season. Bad News: Surely we’re not the only ones who think that after delivering four season of funny, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER has earned the right to an early season renewal, rather than an insulting order for four more scripts. Why HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Will Always Get the Benefit of the Doubt
2009-01-13 18:10:00 When word leaked out that famous-for-nothing reality TV ‘stars’ such as Heidi and Spencer, Kim Kardashian and Kendra Wilkinson had signed on to guest star on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, this TV Addict was the first to admit that our excitement, for lack of a better word, could be contained. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: For the Record, Eh
2008-12-16 16:59:00 Ignoring the fact that last night’s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was eerily familiar to the classic FRASIER episode where Frasier commandeers Daphne’s local watering hole, this TV Addict wanted to take this opportunity to set the record straight. Random Musings: KNIGHT RIDER, Mena Suvari & HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
2008-10-21 21:53:00 As much as this TV Addict would like to agree with Maureen Ryan’s assertion that the only reason NBC President Ben Silverman picked up KNIGHT RIDER for the entire season is because “KITT has taken over NBC!” I can’t help but feel that a car running a major television network is somewhat ridiculous. Which is why I’d like to take this opportunity to post theTVaddict.com’s very own theory that let’s face it, makes way more sense. Brace yourself… because Ben Silverman is obviously a Cylon and renewing KNIGHT RIDER is all a part of his secret pro-machine agenda. Flipping through this week’s fantastic issue of Entertainment Weekly featuring a sneak peak of J.J. Abrams STAR TREK re-boot, this TV Addict couldn’t help but notice an advertisement for Lifetime’s SEX AND LIES IN SIN CITY, starring Mena Suvari. Begging the question: What happened to the young actress who broke onto the scene with scene-stealing turns in AMERICAN...

You’re Invited Behind the Scenes of a HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Wedding
2008-10-20 21:08:00 Rather than remain bitter and angry that our invitation to tonight’s impromptu nuptials between Ted and Stella so clearly must have gotten lost in the mail. This TV Addict thought he’d take the high road by sharing with you this fascinating behind the scenes look at the couple’s very special day [that we weren’t invited to] courtesy of our friends over at BuddyTV.com. And again, just to reiterate in case their was some confusion. There are absolutely no lingering feelings of resentment towards one John Kubicek and BuddyTV.com. After-all, it’s not like this TV Addict had a tux on hold, a gift picked out and a limousine reserved. No really, it’s cool. I mean I’m sure spending time with Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, Sarah Chalke and special guest star Jason Jones isn’t nearly as much fun as it seems and that I’ll be just as content witnessing the wedding on CBS tonight at 8:30PM.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER 2009: Clues You May Have Missed
2008-10-14 18:10:00 With an opening scene so brilliant you’d think Barney belonged on THE BIG BANG THEORY [would he not make the perfect new friend for Sheldon, Leonard, Wolowitz and Raj?], a string of hilarious interventions [Marshall’s hat would make Joey proud!] and an ending so littered with clues that it almost gives LOST a run for its money, last night’s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was a return to form for the series and dare we say it, “Legen…… wait for it…… dary!” Like “First Time in New York” before it [the episode where each member of the gang recounts their ‘first time’] “Intervention” allowed for every character to have their moment to shine [particularly Robin in all of her Canadian inebriated glory]. That is, until the gang reached the inevitable conclusion that moving on and growing up is indeed a fact of life. Of course, what still has this TV Addict smiling is that “one year later” final...

Random Musings: TERMINATOR, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER & THE BIG BANG THEORY
2008-10-01 00:12:00 Just as God no doubt intended, this TV Addict spent his Rosh Hashanah afternoon off by enjoying a mini marathon of Monday night television. With, in the spirit of the holiday, a side of Apples and Honey. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Even a song courtesy of Dr. Horrible himself, Neil Patrick Harris wasn’t enough to save last night’s far from stellar installment of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Not only did Marshall’s quest for the perfect burger hit a little too close to home, with this TV Addict’s all-time favorite Burger joint located thousands of miles across the country [see: Splitz in Whistler, BC]. I couldn’t help but find Barney’s shameless love affair with his company’s new client, the fictional Goliath National Bank somewhat depressing considering the economic crisis millions of Americans currently finding themselves in. 2008-09-23 15:20:00 I have a lot to write about, so don't mind me while I'm all over the place. - Based on my drive to New Jersey this weekend, I declare Maryland to be the new Delaware. It took me two hours and 15 minutes to get from Arlington, VA to the tunnel in Baltimore on Friday afternoon and there was Maryland traffic on Sunday. No traffic on either day in Delaware. Plus, gas is more expensive at the Maryland House rest stop than its counterparts in Delaware and New Jersey. - Two comments about the Steelers game and this is nothing new from what you have already read elsewhere. First, the offensive line, um, struggled. Second, I still question why Coach Mike Tomlin didn?t kick a field goal late in the fourth quarter when the Steelers needed two scores. I was yelling at the TV even before Phil Simms did. Tomlin?s reason from Monday?s Post-Gazette: "Absolutely not," Tomlin replied. "We did not move the ball consistently enough to say that had we kicked the field goal and got the onside kick ...

8 Questions with HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Showrunner Carter Bays
2008-08-14 21:37:00 Carter Bays, picture right. By all accounts, heading into the fourth season, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER is a well-oiled machine. Should loyal fans expect any changes in order to grow the audience? More guest stars perhaps? Carter Bays: We don’t really think about that stuff. It’s hard enough coming up with funny stories every week. I think we try to tell all the funny stories we can and leave the job of promoting the show to the publicists and the network. And they’ve done a spectacular job. I think our Emmy campaign was great this year even though we didn’t get nominated. But Neil [Nell Patrick Harris] got nominated, which was great. Since you brought up the subject, is the lack of Emmy love for HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER a bone of contention for those involved with the show? Because my theory is that Charlie Sheen and the gang from TWO AND A HALF MEN must have some highly incriminating photos of Emmy voters to score all those nominations year-in-year-out. I take grea...

This is my favorite part of the Q&A:Question: So what do you think happened to Doogie? Did he grow up, buy a Porsche and start a family practice in the suburbs? Neil Patrick Harris: He probably developed an addiction to painkillers and wanders around with a cane at some hospital somewhere... Awesome! NPH may be one of the coolest people ever!

How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM)
2008-06-06 05:51:00 How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) is a CBS sitcom premiered on September 19, 2005. Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, the show received generally positive reviews. TV Guide gave it the "Editor's Choice" honor in its Fall Preview Issue. Thomas and Bays drew from their friendship in creating the characters, with Ted based loosely on Bays and Marshall and Lily based loosely on Thomas and his wife.Dubbed "A love story in reverse," the show is structured as the main character, Ted, in the year 2030 telling his son and daughter about the events that led to his meeting their mother, which begin in 2005. The show frequently explores the concepts of stories and storytelling usually with multiple flashbacks occurring each episode. Seeing the show in non-chronological order often results in the viewer seeing something happen and then finding out later the events that caused it. This effect has been dubbed "deep frying" the story, a reference to the show's director, Pamela Fryman. This stru...

Britney Spears Might Return To ?How I Met Your Mother?
2008-06-05 01:29:00 According to Neil Patrick Harris, the "door is open" for Britney Spears to return to How I Met Your Mother. Britney guest starred in two episodes this past season, playing a doctor's office receptionist who is dating Barney, but creepily interested in Ted. "I gave her the address to Ted's apartment at the end of the last episode, so I wouldn't be surprised if she showed up again," said Neil, who plays Barney. Of course, Britney's return is not in Neil's hands. He added, "We would love (guest stars) who get in the show's world to stick around if they want to ... but I don't know what the writers have planned."
