Huawei and 3 Com. Gone.
2008-03-03 23:32:00 While the trend for Chinese overseas direct investment can only go in one direction (if market forces are to be believed), it is not without the odd (politically-inspired) mishap, as Dan Harris at China Law Blog reports (quoting a Wall Street Journal article that quotes him?) in relation to Huawei?s failed bid for 3 Com: ?My ...
Huawei, Bain, 3Com. There Will Be Blood. Because I Said So.
2008-02-26 00:10:00 The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article on the failure of the Huawei/Bain 3Com deal. The article is entitled, "Harsh Climate In Washington Ices 3Com Deal: Hope for Buyout Revival Led By Foreign Capital Dims Amid China Jitters," and it mostly focuses on how the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., (CFIUS) likely would have rejected this deal and on how this likely will have "a chilling effect on foreigners' interest in U.S. firms." My favorite part of the article, for obvious reasons, is the following: "There will be tremendous repercussions in China because of this," said Dan Harris, a Seattle lawyer who represents U.S. clients in China. "We should not be ignoring the impact that this might have on our own companies trying to do business over there." Since the article does not explain the "repercussions," I will do so now. Many (most?) in China believe the rest of the world (the United States, in particular) do not want China to rise. China (probably r...

Can't Connect This - Huawei Modem E220 and Smart 3G Sim
2008-02-23 13:03:00 It's been three weeks with Asus Eee and I've spent more than enough time trying to activate the Smart Buddy sim card to work with the generic Huawei Modem. Even that sentence sounds tiring enough.Huawei ModemThe Huawei modem is made in china, supposedly you just place any 3G enabled sim card and it should connect to the Internet. According to forums, this is also the brand that Globe uses for its visbility service. And Smart is also using a similar modem for its plan 799.So first off, I grabbed a Smart Buddy sim card and inserted it into the hardware. It didn't work so I tried activating the 3G sim card by texting and waited 24 hours for activation. Still, the sim card didn't work so I figured to get it to the Smart Wireless Center and the guy there wasn't helpful either. Note: Hardware is working, sim card is not.He told me that in order for the sim to work, I gotta buy a 3G phone. I said, "what for, that's why I have this modem" and the man said something that the reason the...

The transaction, will give China's Huawei a minority stake in the Marlborough, Mass.-based company.Under the terms of the agreement announced Friday, private-equity firm Bain Capital will take a stake of more than 80% in 3Com, based in Marlborough, Mass., and founded in 1979. Huawei Technologies Co. of China is purchasing the rest, say people familiar with the matter. The deal was struck at $5.30 a share, a 44% premium to 3Com's closing price Thursday, yet far from the heights where its stock traded during the 1990s.According to WSJ, the 3Com deal reflects a burgeoning trend for Chinese companies: engaging in overseas mergers and acquisitions by purchasing strategic stakes instead of complete corporate control. By leaving majority control to others, the Chinese companies hope they can help mitigat...

Huawei parades concept phones
2007-03-19 22:43:00 Warning: Division by zero in /mounted-storage/home45b/sub001-/sc31841-RDEH/tsunamiduit.com/b-log/wp-content/plugins/tla_5381-5.php on line 407 Chinese cellphone manufacturer Huawei recently displayed its range of concept handsets at CeBIT 2007 in Hanover, Germany. These concepts might not even make it to the manufacturing line at the end of the day, but at least they tickle the imagination with some truly weird designs. One of them comes with a built-in USB connector, doing away with the need for pesky cables during data transfer. Another idea focuses on a handset that comes with an integrated Bluetooth headset which can be separated and used independently, turning the cellphone into an impromptu smartphone. Hopefully some of these ideas will turn into reality one day. Original post by Akihabaranews.com and software by Elliott Back |
