NASA Schedules Hubble Repair Mission for Oct. 8 Launch
2008-05-23 16:58:00 NASA has announced the new target launch date for the fifth (although it's called Servicing Mission 4) and final mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Atlantis will launch for STS-125 on October 8 of this year, if all goes well. The mission was previously delayed due to NASA's need to build fuel tanks and for Endeavour to get ready. Endeavour is necessary as a back-up if a problem happens with Atlantis, as the shuttles trajectory to Hubble will make it impossible to make an emergency trip to the ISS. If everything goes well and Endeavour is not needed for a rescue mission, then that shuttle will fly on November 10, 2008, to deliver a Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) to the ISS. When Servicing Mission 4 is complete, not only will Hubble's useful life be extended, but the quality of science it can achieve will be enhanced. These enhancements include new batteries to replace the batteries that have been in use since 1990 and replacement of some of the gyroscopes ...
Hubble Mission Delayed
2008-05-02 04:32:00 On Thursday, NASA said that the date of the shuttle mission to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope will be pushed back four to five weeks. Hubble telescope revolutionized the modern astronomy after it's launch in 1990. Now, it needs some repairing."Right now Hubble's mission is scheduled for August 28; we really cannot make that date with the external tank processing," shuttle program manager John Shannon explained at a press conference on Thursday.Hubble is orbiting at 600 kilometers and the shuttle's mission to Hubble is highly unusual. In case of a major problem with the Hubble mission the shuttle and its crew of seven cannot head to dock at the International Space Station (ISS). So a second shuttle needs to be at the ready, to be launched in case of emergency. To do that two external tanks have to be prepared at the same time, which makes production a bigger challenge and takes longer time.
Hubble-rescue mission delayed
2008-05-01 19:57:00 Delays in producing space shuttle fuel tanks, which were substantially redesigned after the 2003 Columbia disaster, will postpone NASA's final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope by a month or longer, officials at the U.S. space agency said on Thursday.

Hubble maps the changing constellation of Internet 'black holes'
2008-04-13 23:59:00 You're trying to log on to a Web site and it's not working. You try again and again. But persistence doesn't pay off. The site you want is inexplicably, frustratingly, out of reach. The other computer might just be turned off, but the causes could be more mysterious. At any given moment, a proportion of computer traffic ends up being routed into information black holes. These are situations where a path between two computers does exist, but messages ? a request to visit a Web site, an outgoing e-mail ? get lost along the way.A University of Washington system named Hubble looks for these black holes and maps them on a Web site, providing an ever-changing constellation of the Internet's weak points. The Hubble map is posted at hubble.cs.washington.edu/, where visitors can view a map of problems worldwide or type in a specific Web page or network address to check its status. The work is being presented next week in San Francisco at the Usenix Symposium on Networked Systems Design an...
How many already and how many more? The great Hubble at it again.
2008-03-20 21:00:00 Does anybody know how many of these discoveries have been made on the back of a Hubble image or reading? Hubble Discovers 67 more "lensed" galaxies.
2008-03-20 05:33:00 We gotta keep this telescope operational: Hubble discovers 67 new gravitationally lensed galaxies What is gravitational lensing? Gravitational lensing occurs when light travelling toward us from a distant galaxy is magnified and distorted as it encounters a massive object between the galaxy and us. These gravitational lenses often allow astronomers to peer much farther back into the early universe than they would normally be able to do. Here is a cool video of an Einstein Ring. An Einstein ring is a complete circle image of a background galaxy, which is formed when the background galaxy, a massive, foreground galaxy, and the Hubble Space Telescope are all aligned perfectly. Therein creating a complete circle lense effect. > > So pretty pictures are nice, but what impact do these discoveries have on astro-physics? Well read on dear surfer, read on. ...they can be used to create a census of galaxy masses in the universe to test the predictions of cosmological mo...

Hubble Found A Galaxy Far, Far Away
2008-02-14 17:58:00 From Neatorama: The Hubble Space Telescope just snapped a photo of what may be the farthest galaxy we've ever seen: it's almost 13 billion light-years away. Since the galaxy is so far away, its light took ages to reach us, so what we see now is a snapshot of how this galaxy looked

Hubble and the Space Program
2008-02-04 02:56:00 I was reading this article at Universe Today and felt it necessary to comment on the state of the space program in this country. I have concerns, you see, and they are legit concerns. Or so I think. The article talks about the repairs that will be done on Hubble in a way that sounds as if the astronauts have better things to do. I'll admit that they probably do, but it's also not Hubble's fault that they have other crap to do. Needless to say, Hubble is getting an upgrade and will be 90 times more sensitive and be capable of picking up over 900 galaxies as its field of vision is being increased. Also, its lifespan is being extended to 2013, with a scheduled decommission date in 2020 (which is part of what I want to discuss). Firstly, I'm glad to hear that they'll be fixing this amazing satellite. It apparently suffered a power failure in January of last year and is in need of some fixing. Thanks to NASA for fitting it into their schedule. Here is my concern, though. What...

Nightly Ramble: Hubble, Pocast,Hunter for Huck,Tape,Uptime, more
2008-01-24 00:20:00 I note by way of LGF that Hubble’s getting an overhaul. Jawa Report trying the Podcast thing? It appears so. Michelle points up where Duncan Hunter has endorsed Huckabee. I dunno as that’s really much of a shock, that Hunter endorses a less than appealing candidate. It’s not like he had a whole bunch of choice in the matter. I’m still dealing with the result of an intestinal ailment. Hell of a way to lose weight, but it seems to work. Got the new tape drive working… a 40/80 DLT. More than enough to back the machines I have here, though it’s going to be a week before I get the schedules worked out so I can get everything onto tape. I suppose I’ll have to look for some tape. Joel, this is why I never… and I mean NEVER allow ‘autonegotiate’ on my networks. 100 full or 1gb full…and maybe 10 full for the test networks. One hiccup can spoil your whole week. All it takes is one flaky patch cable. Trust me, I know. And ...

Hubble Finds Double Einstein Ring
2008-01-14 16:56:00 NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has revealed a never-before-seen optical alignment in space: a pair of glowing rings, one nestled inside the other like a bull's-eye pattern. The double-ring pattern is caused by the complex bending of light from two distant galaxies strung directly behind a foreground massive galaxy, like three beads on a string.More than just a novelty, this very rare phenomenon can offer insight into dark matter, dark energy, the nature of distant galaxies, and even the curvature of the universe. The ring was found by an international team of astronomers led by Raphael Gavazzi and Tommaso Treu of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The discovery is part of the ongoing Sloan Lens Advanced Camera for Surveys (SLACS) program. The team is reporting its results at the 211th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas. A paper has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal. The phenomenon, called gravitational lensing, occurs when a massive gala...

Hubble to get an upgrade!
2008-01-14 16:32:00 Source : NewScientistSpace Space shuttle astronauts will attempt an unprecedented in-orbit repair of key Hubble Space Telescope (HST) instruments during the servicing mission scheduled for August 2008. The repairs, along with the addition of two new instruments, will make Hubble 90 times as powerful as it was after its flawed optics were corrected in 1993. In October 2006, NASA announced plans to carry out a fourth and final servicing mission for Hubble, in which it would install two new scientific instruments and replace the observatory’s batteries and gyroscopes. But previously the agency has not said whether it would attempt a difficult repair of two key instruments that have broken down in recent years. The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), which died in January 2007, was Hubble’s highest resolution camera and its most-used instrument. And the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), which failed in 2004, measured light spectra in the ultraviolet, allowing it to...

2007-11-19 19:38:00 The sharpest image ever taken of the large "grand design" spiral galaxy M81 was released 9. June 2007 at the American Astronomical Society Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.A spiral-shaped system of stars, dust, and gas clouds, the galaxy's arms wind all the way down into the nucleus. Though the galaxy is located 11.6 million light-years away, the Hubble Space Telescope's view is so sharp that it can resolve individual stars, along with open star clusters, globular star clusters, and even glowing regions of fluorescent gas. The Hubble data was taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys in 2004 through 2006. This colour composite was assembled from images taken in blue, visible, and infrared light.Full Size ImageWarning! At 10,000 accounts and growing, the vibrant virtual community of Second Life is becoming a way of life for many. Ken interviewed me in his Media Ecology Second Life series a few weeks ago - see the 60-minute video here - and I'm still enjoying it. Ken and I talk about life in Second Life - how to do it, how to live it, and its relationship to real or "first" life in everything ranging from art and music to (of course) sex. Whether you're an old hand at Second Life, a newbie, or just want to learn more about this fascinating place, you won't want to miss this special 40-minute interview (and, actually, there is no way that you can, because it will always be available here - and likely somewhere in Second Life, too).my 40-minute interview of Ken HudsonFor more of my work about the differences between realspace and cyberspace...listen to Light...

Hubble Space Telescope Papercraft
2007-10-21 22:13:00 The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. Its position outside the Earth's atmosphere provides significant advantages over ground-based telescopes — images are not blurred by the atmosphere, there is no background from light scattered by air, and the Hubble can observe ultra-violet light that is normally absorbed by the ozone layer in observations made from Earth. Since its launch in 1990, it has become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy.Make your very own hand-held Hubble telescope model. There are three levels of difficulties. The easiest is the PVC model which will require PVC pipes. The second is a paper model with 3o pieces of parts. Last but not the least is an expert papermodel with 300 pieces of parts that will require 30 hours to build. You have the option of also assembling the internal structure of the telescope, including the mirror and the instrument bay, which fits i...
