Venezuela Hugo Chavez Funding Hezbollah
2008-07-07 20:23:00 SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia | The Bush administration is accusing the government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of providing cash and refuge to the militant Islamist group Hezbollah of southern Lebanon. An investigation by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) names Venezuelan diplomat Ghazi Nasr al Din and Venezuelan-Arab businessman Fawzi Kanan as key links between the two."It is extremely troubling to see the government of Venezuela employing and providing safe harbor for Hezbollah facilitators and fundraisers," said Adam Szubin, political affairs director of OFAC.Mr. al Din has served as charge d'affaires at the Venezuelan Embassy in Syria and as director of political affairs at the embassy in Lebanon. The Treasury Department made the accusations in a June 18 statement, which summarized an investigation of Venezuelan-registered businesses that are thought to be laundering money for Hezbollah. The department also froze assets of Mr. al Din and Mr. Kan...

The UN Continues Corrupting Itself - A Chavez Connection
2008-04-20 18:14:00 Cross-posted by Maggie at Maggie's Notebook, and at Reject the UNThe United Nations simply cannot be shamed. The anti-poverty agency within the U.N., the U.N. Development Program (UNDP), is using it's procurement power to favor Hugo Chavez. This is a dizzying web of deceit...it isn't easily explained, and the UN is hiding it's paper trail as I write. All the details are not known but here's my summary:The UNDP is charged with fighting poverty - their mission is anti-poverty development. The UNDP needs to procure goods and services to fulfill its mission. The agency has rules governing how those procurements are made. The rules require that bids be "let" and that the bidding environment be "competitive."Fox News (April 18th, 2008) discovered that much of the bidding was anything but "competitive," in fact, competitive bidding was waived "on more than half of the $1.5 BILLION in goods and services it paid for over the past three years."The same UNDP documents also show that by fa...

Who Else is Against the Colombian Free Trade Agreement?
2008-04-11 04:35:00 Madam Speaker has plans to block the Colombian Free Trade Agreement: Defying the White House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday the House will change its rules to avoid a required vote this year on a free-trade agreement with Colombia. Pelosi, D-Calif., said the change would remove the timetable that says Congress must take up trade bills within 90 legislative days after they are received from the White House. She intended to bring the rule proposal to the full House on Thursday. “The president took action” in submitting the deal Tuesday, she said. “I will take mine tomorrow.” The Colombia deal was a leading topic as President Bush and congressional leaders discussed the economy and other issues at the White House Wednesday afternoon. Pelosi, emerging from the meeting, said their message to the president was that the main concern must be the living standards of Americans and they could not consider the free trade pact “unless we address the econ...

The New York Times v. Hugo Chavez
2008-04-08 20:33:00 by Stephen Lendman Carly Simon's theme song from the 1977 James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me" says it all about The New York Times' agitprop skill - "Nobody Does It Better" nor have others in the media been at it longer. Most important is The Times influence and reach and what media critic Norman Solomon says about its front page. He calls it "the most valuable square inches of media real estate in the USA." It's read by government, business leaders and opinion-makers everywhere and for that reason is hugely important. Hugo Chavez is its frequent target, and Simon Romero has the assignment as The Times' man in Caracas. His latest March 30 offering is headlined "Files Suggest Venezuela Bid to Aid Columbia Rebels," and it relates to the spurious claim that captured FARC-EP computers contained potentially smoking-gun evidence "t(ying) Venezuela's government to efforts to secure arms for Colombia's largest insurgency" and is...

FARC Had Uranium
2008-03-27 20:29:00 Sixty-six pounds worth of uranium: Weeks after the dust settled from the Colombian bombs dropped on a clandestine rebel camp in Ecuador, the information found on three laptop computers found in the rubble continues to reverberate in the Andes. On Wednesday, Colombian military officials said that they recovered 66 pounds of uranium that, they say, was acquired by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to make a “dirty bomb.” Colombian Gen. Freddy Padilla tied the uranium to the seized laptops, saying one of the computer files mentions attempts by the FARC to buy uranium, apparently to resell. If you remember, there was a dust up a few weeks back about Columbia putting some FARC big wigs six feet under. When they did that, they found some laptops and grabbed them also. Chavez got his panties in a wad and put some troops on the border, everyone got together and made nice, end of story. Not so quick. Those laptops have lots of information on them and Chavez...

Hugo Chavez: Looking for a Rumble in the Jungle?
2008-03-07 18:52:00 Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez's decision to mobilize troops to the Columbian border in response to Bogota's assassination of a member of the guerilla group FARC has created a diplomatic crisis that many fear could lead to war. Skepticism abounds that Chavez has initiated the imbroglio to distract attention from Venezuela's domestic problems, or indeed to cover up his own ties to FARC. Strained relations between Chavez and many other world leaders only add to fears that this already unsettled region could be headed for a long conflict.

Seized Laptop Ties Chavez with Farc - UPDATE: ?War has Begun? and Farc Reb
2008-03-05 14:27:00 Colombian military forces captured a laptop computer when they put Raul Reyes and 16 other members of Farc on ice. What they found on that laptop links Venezuelan blowhard Hugo Chavez to the Colombian rebels: Files in the computer seized in Saturday’s raid into Ecuador that claimed the lives of Reyes and 23 of his comrades offer an intimate portrait of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s desire to undermine Colombia’s U.S.-allied government. If authentic, the documents show that sympathies Chavez first aired publicly in January grew out of a relationship that dates back more than a decade. But Chavez is not one of the correspondents, and his sentiments mentioned in these documents are relayed solely through the rebels. Venezuela says the documents are lies and fabrications. If they are, they are expertly done. The article alleges Chavez gave Farc $300 million: Naranjo alleges the “300,” called the “dossier” in a Dec. 23 message signed by Mar...

Is Chavez Looking to Start a War?
2008-03-03 19:22:00 It is the nature of socialist countries to try to expand and attack their neighbors. North Vietnam took South Vietnam. China took Tibet. The Soviet Union took everything it could. So it makes me wonder if Chavez isn’t looking for a reason to invade Colombia. He certainly has been building up his military for some reason, and now has taken to open threats against his neighbors: “This could be the start of a war in South America,” Chavez said. He warned Colombian president Alvaro Uribe: “If it occurs to you to do this in Venezuela, President Uribe, I’ll send some Sukhois” _ Russian warplanes recently bought by Venezuela. This is no small threat. In the past several years Chavez has spent , according to the Defense Intelligence Agency, $4.3 billion in weapons in 2005-2006, more even than China. This includes a Kalashnikov assault rifle (AK-47) factory licensed from Russia. For a nation not at war, this is hardly an auspicious sign. This is the al...
BBC: Documents Show ?Correa has a relationship and commitments with Farc?.
2008-03-03 08:49:00 Things just got a whole lot more interesting down south. Columbia is now saying that they recovered some documents in the raid that links Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa with Farc: A spokesman for Colombian President Alvaro Uribe told reporters the documents provided information that “Correa has a relationship and commitments with Farc”. Police commander Gen Oscar Naranjo said one document showed Reyes had met Ecuador’s minister of internal security and that they discussed Mr Correa’s “interest in making official relations with the Farc”. Earlier, Colombian Foreign Minister Fernando Araujo went on television to express regret that it had to enter Ecuador. But he said that the raid about 1.8km (one mile) inside Ecuador was “indispensable”. As I noted before, Chavez called Reyes a “good revolutionary.” If Correa is in bed with Farc too, Columbia is in a tight spot. Troops are massing on two sides, with the leaders...
Chavez Sends Tanks to Border with Colombia; UPDATE: Ecuador Getting Into
2008-03-03 08:00:00 Hugo Chavez is all kinds of angry over Colombia taking out the leader of the left wing rebel group Farc. Colombia sent a crew into Ecuador Saturday and turned “Raul Reyes and at least 16 other rebels” room temperature. So, obviously, Venezuela needs tanks on its border: Colombia’s defence minister had described the death of Reyes as the “biggest blow so far” to Farc. But Mr Chavez described the strike as “a cowardly murder, all of it coldly calculated”. He said Colombia “invaded Ecuador, flagrantly violated Ecuador’s sovereignty”. Mr Chavez addressed his defence minister, asking him to “move 10 battalions to the border with Colombia for me, immediately” - a deployment likely to involve several thousand soldiers. “The air force should mobilise. We do not want war. But we are not going to let them… come and divide and weaken us.” Chavez also closed the Venezuelan embassy in Bogota. He’s...

A Letter to President Hugo Chavez
2008-02-28 22:44:00 Dear HugoI am in Maracaibo, Venezuala, my first time on your continent and thus in your country! My bag isn?t though! That never came out of the carousal and is somewhere between here and Edinburgh or so American Airlines tell me!Getting here was a three plane journey consisting of lots of walking, sky waitresses (old and new), security checks and an eye-opener at La Chinita International Airport as I watched a full Boeing 757 disgorge itself of hyped up Venezuelans and some ?self-inflated? oil workers into an airport that was designed for nothing more than a Fokker light aircraft! Sir, you seem to have this idea that one pumped-up immigration official with a hole in his desk where the stamp has worn through and the snail like x-ray of luggage as the passengers leave the airport is the correct thing to do! I spent two and a half hours trying to get out of the airport ? by the way, I jumped the queue as my bag had gone walkabout and I was completely fed up!I checked into the Hotel Cu...

Hugo Chavez, Hillary Clinton, thieves of a feather
2008-02-25 16:11:00 We have already said this before.  Great minds think alike and so do socialist minds. Hugo Chavez, via Thomas Lifson, American Thinker: On his regular Sunday television show “Hello, President” Hugo Chavez announced he is pushing forward with his plan to seize rural lands he considers “idle.” According to AP, he told Venezuelans that … the government was “advancing quickly” with a concept of “social, or collective, property” to be included in forthcoming constitutional reforms. Uncle Hugo sees property, wants property, takes property That is what socialists do.  They take property for the greater good which means themselves. Like Chavez, Mrs. Clinton, sees, wants, takes, again Thomas Lifson, American Thinker: The Hillary Clinton campaign has blatantly disregarded the law on intellectual property and re-published an entire copyrighted article from the American Thinker website.
