Running: My body's "hull speed"
2008-04-11 03:20:00 I've been thinking about this lately. You see, I'm becoming a runner. Never been before but I think you'd have to say that I'm getting there. Which brings me to this point. I think my "hull speed" is a 9 minute mile. For those of you not familiar with "hull speed" it refers to a boats natural "max-speed". Essentially the point at which you have to begin expending vastly more energy into the boat to get incremental speed increases. For our family's Cal 40 sailboat that is approximately 6+ knots (6.5 maybe). For me and running it appears that the 9 minute mile is about where my body likes to be. Check out this chart. Of course I have a chart, I'm a geek aren't I? Anyways, the first datapoint is from February 6th. Just coming off the long winters break and I walked half my route. But look at the way the curve is settling down very nicely right at the 9 minute mile mark. My goal of course is to get it much lower ...

2008-04-08 13:04:00 The Red Sox and Dodgers made a deal last night. The Sox acquired 28 year-old righty pitcher Eric Hull for 23 year-old shortstop Christian Lara. Lara was once Boston's top shortstop prospect, but he's been passed by Jed Lowrie and several others. A couple years ago Baseball America wrote that Lara had "a chance to be a plus defender." They weren't impressed with his bat. The Sox challenged him by putting him at Double A in 2005-06, but he was demoted to High A for '07. Hull seems like an organizational arm, though he did intrigue last year with an 11.1 K/9 in Triple A as a reliever. Doesn't help that he's just 5'11" though. The Dodgers needed roster space and designated him for assignment on March 31st.

Playboy Prison Guard Heather Hull Gets Back to Prison
2008-01-24 19:43:00 Heather Hull posed in Playboy magazine last March in the “Employee of the Month” section. She lost her job as a prison guard in Berks County, Pennsylvania when she did. She now has been awarded her job back by an independent arbitrator. A small photo of a partially clothed Hull appeared in the “Employee of the Month” section. An arbitrator ruled Hull did not engage in conduct unbecoming an officer, but used poor judgment in deciding to pose for the magazine. Hull was making $41,000 dollars a year. She won’t be awarded any back pay. I am sure she can make up some of that money with modeling contracts. She is also more famous for having been fired than if she had not have been.
