2009-03-19 08:30:00 Warning: some scenes definitely NSFW. Also, a few other scenes not safe for the stomach. In the past, I’ve had my students watch this movie. It’s a school-friendly documentary and it’s easy to create class discussions and writing assignments based on it. During one class, one student even got into it by bringing some McDonald’s take-out ...

ZillionTV: Oh Jeez, Hulu and Roku Done Had Themselves a Baby
2009-03-04 15:00:00 From Gizmodo: Streaming TV is on the up and up—that much is clear. What, then, does ZillionTV offer that, say, Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, and Apple TV don't? A little convergence, maybe. That's not to say that ZillionTV is drastically more versatile than any number of existing s

Hulu Continues To Shine | Profiles Galore & Impressive Stats… All Via
2008-10-31 02:34:00 Hulu is celebrating its first 12 months in operation, and a successful year it has been. But will that success continue? And if so, what is the ultimate future for Hulu? Hulu’s First Year Hulu launched this time last year in beta to a positive yet subdued reaction. The people in the business were excited but no-one outside of the Web video bubble really gave two hoots. But that’s slowly and surely changed, with word of mouth (there’s been no formal advertising) seeing the NBC and Fox owned service gaining massively in an already crowded online video sector over the past 12 months. The first anniversary of the site’s arrival also brought with it high profile articles in The New York Times and USA Today, both of which are very positive about the venture. Impressive Site Stats The statistics speak for themselves. The most recent Nielsen Online Web viewing figures show that Hulu generated more than 142 million streams during September in the U.S. They’re worldwide figures as ...
Hulu, Dr. Horrible Make Time’s 50 Best Inventions of the Year
2008-10-30 23:55:00 1. DNA tests. 2. Electric cars 3. An unmanned moonship. 5. The world’s biggest particle accelerator. What are we missing here? No. 4 — Hulu.com. That’s right, easy access to TV on the web is changing the world, according to Time, which just released its list of the 50 best inventions of 2008. We totally agree. By the way, even better: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog finished at No. 15, just ahead of the world’s first moving skyscraper and an expressive robot. Good enough for the Evil League of Evil?
Hulu Doing Great, But Why So Shy about Numbers?
2008-10-29 18:31:00 Hulu is doing a big PR push today around the birthday of its beta, with profiles in the New York Times and USA Today. The company shared some nice stats, like its impressive Nielsen numbers (our story) and its viewers’ receptiveness to ads. For instance, a study of four brands showed Hulu increased purchase intent by 28 percent and message association by 22 percent. Meanwhile, 93 percent of Hulu users surveyed say Hulu has the right amount of ads. Hulu also found that 38 percent of respondents watched shows they’d never seen before that currently air on TV, 20 percent watched episodes or clips of a series they normally watch on TV but had missed, and 19 percent watched a show that’s no longer on TV. So Hulu can say that the site is additive, rather than stealing watchers from its TV network parents and partners. But even though Hulu will tell us its users have written more than 72,000 reviews on its site, and Twitter users have “tweeted” about Hulu more than 40,000 times...
Happy Birthday Hulu. I’m Glad You Guys Didn’t Suck.
2008-10-29 09:30:00 Online tv/film site Hulu launched a year ago today, and boy did we have to eat crow. We provided nearly constant criticism of the site since it was announced in March 2007 (no name, billion dollar valuation, name translation issues, trademark absurdity, etc.). But despite a slightly bumpy launch, we had to admit that they did an outstanding job. And today I can safely say I spend more time watching Hulu than I do my standard home cable connection. The site continues to grow rapidly. In August they had over 100 million video streams. Last month, according to Nielsen, they streamed 142 million videos, a 42% month over month increase. 72,000 reviews and 14,000 forum posts have been left of the site, and the company says they’ve received 50,000 feedback emails. The site now has 110 content providers (including NBC Universal, FOX, Sony Pictures Television, MGM Studios, Comedy Central, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, PBS, FX, Sundance Channel and the Sci Fi Channel), up from 40 at laun...
MTV Music - A Hulu For Music Videos | Unfortunately, Copyright Restrictions
2008-10-28 19:31:00 MTV Music is a new website from MTV wholly dedicated to music videos. But will this Hulu for music be able to compete with the many destinations already on the Web for music video lovers? From MTV To RealityTV MTV was once a channel dedicated to music videos, hence the name. But recent years have seen this completely change, with the group of channels now much more likely to show reality or lifestyle programming. Personally, I’m not a fan of this change, much preferring the MTV of old where there was wall-to-wall music videos from night until noon and not an episode of The Hills or The Real World anywhere in sight. MTV Music Luckily for me and other fans of the old-style channel, MTV has recently launched MTV Music, a website dedicated just to music videos, all of which are on demand, and free to watch. The site has launched with both old and new videos available to watch, all of which can also be embedded to websites, blogs, and social networks. There’s also the chance to comme...
Hulu Surpassed 140M Streams in Sept.
2008-10-22 20:41:00 Hulu generated more than 142 million streams in September, as the premium content site continues its steady climb up the Nielsen VideoCensus rankings of the top brands on the web. Hulu’s rise has been an strong and steady one. It had 1.7 million plays in February — while it was still in restricted beta. In April, the site cracked the top 10 for the first time ever, with more than 63 million plays. Then in July, Hulu broke the 100 million play-mark. Nielsen doesn’t recommend doing month-to-month comparisons of its data as it says it’s constantly tweaking the system, but the overall picture is undeniable. In less than a year, the NBC/Fox joint venture has gone from nothing to No. 6, edging out established brands like ESPN and MTV. And the numbers for October should be even bigger as Hulu’s been one of the few places to catch those red-hot Sarah Palin SNL sketches, live-streams of the debates, and network shows that are still premiering. Sure, YouTube may trounce the com...
Watercooler Gets ABC, Hulu for TV Communities
2008-10-20 14:00:00 Startup Watercooler, which makes fan community applications for social networks, is now an official partner of ABC and Hulu. To score ABC content is somewhat of a coup; Watercooler joins Veoh and AOL* as the only sites with official deals with ABC, as far as we know. However, since ABC requires that its full-episode content be watched within its special Move Networks player, partners only get the privilege of linking to it (whoo-hoo.). But Mountain View, Calif.-based Watercooler will also be getting behind-the-scenes clips and feeds of show-related news from ABC that it can show directly within its applications. From Hulu, Watercooler will be getting 480p full-screen video embeds of the shows the site carries. Regular folks like us (and previously, Watercooler too) who embed Hulu players don’t have the full-screen option; only official partner sites like AOL and TV.com do. Watercooler CEO Kevin Chou says that “small 3-inch screen experience” was a major impediment to fans wat...

How to access Hulu from outside USA
2008-03-13 19:44:00 Major television networks and movie studios have been providing their content to legal websites via various revenue sharing models. This is one way of fighting online piracy online. Some shows and movies can be purchased or rented from services like Apple’s iTunes or Amazon’s Unbox. Hulu is out to play
2008-03-13 01:02:00 Hulu is now out of private beta. I've been addicted to this web service (I never hooked up cable in my apartment) and this has become a go-to website for following The Office, House and an occasional episode of COPS. The new version also has an expanded movie library and a selection of HD. This product (earlier post here) took a lot of abuse when it first came around...dubbed Clown Co, but seems to be working out for the better. I only hope that the advertiser list expands (eternally brainwashed by Royal Caribbean and Nissan).

Hulu Goes Live and is All Set to Compete with YouTube in Online Video Servi
2008-03-12 18:47:00 After the unprecedented success of YouTube, lots of video-upload and sharing services cropped up in the online world, but none could compete with the Google baby. Hulu.com Is Live
2008-03-12 16:25:00 Hulu.com, the joint venture between NBC and FOX, is now officially up and live, after a trial/testing period. I'm going to check it out, and watch the final two episodes of the lame-to-okay second season of Heroes. I need closure! Hulu has a lot of TV content, all free, so check it out.
