Creating Super Human Kids
2009-09-21 12:30:00
As our toddler is approaching the 2nd year of life (terrible twos?), we have been contemplating various school systems and activities. We have thought about educational day cares, Montessori schools, ballet, Karate, piano, French immersion, swimming, soccer and the list goes on. Stepping back and looking at the big picture, I have to think about what is the purpose of all these extra curricular activities. I’d like to think that we doing what is best for our children. However, if you look a bit closer, are we simply training a super human kid? Are we, as parents, compensating for what we didn’t have as children? Perhaps we want our offspring to look better than the next kid? In addition to the purpose of over stimulating our kids, these extra curricular activities are big business and can cost a lot of money. For example, I just found out that our area is about to get its first Montessori school which is a new age way for toddlers to learn. I’m all for optimal learning...
The Human Quena Orchestra
2009-09-21 00:03:00
There are many ways to educe doom, but two remain the most popular and effective. Most bands down tune and play slow tempos while a scant elite craft dark arrangements using feedback and ambient noises. San Francisco?s oddly named Human Quena Orchestra is one of those few that dare to leave space in their arrangements and shun the conventions of rock music. To call them an angry Nadja, a depressed Whitehouse, an ambient Gnaw, or a sedated Trees would give you a reasonable idea of their aesthetics, but such comparisons fail to capture the overall atmosphere. The Politics of the Irredeemable is Human Quena Orchestra?s second record and finds the band wallowing in its own swill. I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. From the blinding feedback of ?Progress? to the sullen descent of ?Denial (Part 2),? each buzz, crackle, and creak is organic and insular, circumscribed within the blackened wasteland staked out by the band. Their hellhole is cinematic in scope but isolating in...

Human Speech is Bi-otic, Like Vision Can be Bi-focal
2009-08-31 08:06:00
How many of us ever think that speech communication is only possible because of the two states that constitute human voice communication, call it bi-otic, if you will. It is analogous to the two stages of radar, namely, search in order to detect a target, and subsequently, lock-on. With speech on

Zoos, Habit(at)s and Thoughts on Animal and Human Freedom
2009-07-13 05:46:00
In Yann Martel?s acclaimed book ?Life of Pi? the first person narrator defends the case for zoos and discusses notions of freedom from the point of view of animals. Some people criticize zoos for being confined spaces as opposed to the natural habitat and forms of life and it boils down to questions of freedom and happiness. Are zoos a form of jail for the animals and are they unhappy there? Are they stressed because of all the human attention and the clicking cameras and the pointy fingers?A zoo is indeed a confined space, but it comes with various advantages. One of them is safety; another is a steady supply of food. In the wild it is literally a jungle. All the animals need to hunt for food in order to avoid starvation, but with it there is the constant danger of becoming prey to other stronger and fiercer animals. In the zoo they may lose some of those killer instincts, but they are fed and protected by humans. In the book, there is an analysis of how animals are actually very co...

Aardvark, the human search engine. Free invites [Limited number only]
2009-06-16 13:32:00
A couple of months from now when you’re sitting at a corporate quiz, a question will appear on the screen which will ask you to connect the African animal more popularly known as an anteater and a exciting new web portal that uses the wisdom of the crowds. The answer you should scream out should be Aardvark. And the Aardvark roams about freely in The Mechanical Zoo, the start-up which introduced this interesting service. In their own words Aardvark is “a new type of search that makes it easy to find subjective information.” What it does is that it takes in people’s questions and sends them to you via IM and in a neat manner you can either “try” the question or “pass” or “refer” it to someone in your friends list. And since you know your friends abilities, this increases the chances of the question being answered. Since the question is open to everyone on Aardvark, the chances increase exponentially. Aardvark also informs y...

I'm Sorry, But US Hypocrisy On Human Rights Is Continuing Apace Under
2009-06-04 09:43:00
1. I love my country -- the United States. 2. Of course I believe in human rights. 3. The US should strive to be a beacon on human rights. 4. When appropriate, and in ways that are appropriate, the US should encourage other countries to maintain human rights as well. Not in an idiotic Jimmy Carter sort of way, but in a sophisticated Henry Kissinger/Bill Clinton/Ronald Reagan sort of way. 5. I supported Hillary Clinton for president up until the very last minute. But Hillary (and Barack), would you please get a damn clue on human rights, would you please stop embarrassing my country, would you please stop being such hypocrites, and would you please stop using human rights as a way to advance your popularity at home. I am referring to the US (on today of all days) blasting China for human rights violations that mostly took place 20 years ago. I say today of all days because today is the day that President Obama is making nice to Saudi Arabia while touting his n...

Human Rights Situation In Occupied Palestine

By Stephen LendmanMay 25, 2009On March 15, 2006, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly 170 to 4 (with only the US, Israel, the Marshall Islands and Palau against) "to establish the Human Rights Council (HRC), based in Geneva, in replacement of the Commission on Human Rights, as a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly....responsible for promoting universal respect for the protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction of any kind and in a fair and equal manner."HRC "is an inter-governmental body within the UN system made up of 47 states responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe."At its tenth session this year, HRC prepared a report titled: "Human Rights Situation in Palestine and other Occupied Arab Territories" and delivered it on March 20. Moss Can Be Used As 'Surrogate Mother' To Human Genes
2009-05-12 02:28:00
Moss, that dark green, short, furry plant that seems to grow spontaneously in dark, moist spaces, has unexpectedly shown up as a kind of surrogate mother to human genes, able to read human genes and manufacture the proteins encoded on them! This finding, made by Martin Fussenegger, Professor of Chemical and Bioengineering at ETH Zurich and others at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, is a 450 million year old reversal of fortune!
Human Landfill
2009-05-11 02:43:00
Times I wish I had a camera: I went grocery shopping this morning, parked, and as I strolled in noticed that a car a few spots down from mine had what looked like steam coming from under the hood. "Huh," I said, and walked on.When I came out about ten minutes later, the car was engulfed in flames, black smoke billowing high above. Firefighters and police had it surrounded. They were kind enough to let me get my car the hell out of there, which was cool, but I really would have liked a picture. Not too bloggy here lately, huh? I've actually had lots of posts in mind, but absolutely zero energy or creativity, except for one day when a wicked hangover was an excuse. Nothing new, in any case. There was gonna be one post about how Kiss it Goodbye's "Sick Day" is the best song ever after a bad day at work, and how the opening scream of KitG's "Target Practice" is the best thing to clear your head when you're hungover. But I didn't write it, except now, I guess.I was also gonna write a...

Deadly Flu Virus with Human to Human Transmission Strikes

Everyone has probably already heard about this, but a new strain of flu virus has struck in Mexico and the United States.
