BHA - British Humanist Association - Science Vision
2007-11-15 22:18:00
reposted from: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/b-hascience/Tom Rees has posted the following questions in the database of BHA Science. (to join this Yahoo group you must be a member of the BHA.Tom, thanks for creating the four question Database table "What do you want from the group, what can you do for the group?" viz:-1) Name2) Where did you here about the group?3) Why did you join the group?4) Do you have a 'vision' for what you want the group to be?Let me explain why I think the 'vision' bit is important for BHA Science group.A vision should be a source of inspiration and will stretch the Resources and Capabilities of the BHA Science group. Because our Resources and Capabilities are not fixed our vision can be stretched a lot! For example we potentially have the resources of many science professionals of the honourary BHA associates, the capabilities of 7000+ BHA members and the BHA Philosophers group. We could get the help of some of the 17 Million people (MORI poll) in the UK...
Humanist Draws Line Between Atheism and Anti-theism
2007-10-01 18:14:00
?While atheism is the lack of belief in any god, anti-theism means actively seeking out the worst aspects of faith in god and portraying them as representative of all religion. Anti-theism seeks to shame and embarrass people away from religion, browbeating them about the stupidity of belief in a bellicose god.? - Greg M. EpsteinWould this not mean that there are atheists, and then there are atheist extremists, aka anti-theists?As in many atheists? blogs which I have seen (not all), there has been the use of terms such as moderate Christians and Christian extremists (labeled as fundamentalists). In following suit, there must also then be moderate Atheists and Atheist extremists. For there is the atheist which lives their life with a ?lack of belief in any god?, then there is the atheist which appears to actively spend their life speaking, writing, blogging, and ranting against every religious thing that takes place. The definition of moderates seems to be, they may concern themselves ...

Existential-humanist movement
2007-09-17 14:49:00
Humanistic psychology was developed in the 1950s in reaction to both behaviorism and psychoanalysis, arising largely from existential philosophy and writers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Søren Kierkegaard. By using phenomenology, intersubjectivity and first-person categories, the humanistic approach seeks to get a glimpse of the whole person and not just the fragmented parts of the personality or cognitive functioning. Humanism focuses on uniquely human issues and fundamental issues of life, such as self-identity, death, aloneness, freedom, and meaning. Some of the founding theorists behind this school of thought were Abraham Maslow who formulated a hierarchy of human needs, Carl Rogers who created and developed Client-centered therapy, and Fritz Perls who helped create and develop Gestalt therapy. It has become so influential as to be called the "third force" within psychology (preceded by behaviorism and psychoanalysis). And it will also play with your mind.

The Humanist Project in the 21st Century
2007-06-06 01:42:00
The AHRC is sponsoring this debate as part of the Institute of Ideas "Battle of Ideas", a two day festival aiming to create an atmosphere of intellectual freedom and open-ended exploration of new ideas, innovative research and academic trends. This debate will consider what it means to be human. Different historical periods have generated distinct narratives, attributing human beings with more or less control over our destiny. The debate will explore both heroic notions of humanity and looking at evidence which reminds us of the dark side of the human potential. Speakers include Professor AC Grayling and Professor Raymond Tallis, and that the debate will be chaired by Claire Fox, Director of the Institute for Ideas. The "Battle of Ideas" takes place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October at the Royal College of Art, London SW7. The Humanist Project in the 21st Century will run from 4pm-5:30pm on 30th October. For further details visit www.battleofideas.co.uksu art and humanist rese...

The first edition of the Humanist Symposion is out. Secular Humanist First, Atheist Second
2007-04-16 12:30:00
I am an atheist, but I am an atheist because I am first a secular humanist. Atheism is not my starting point but where secular humanism has led me. I focus this blog on criticizing religion and other forms of irrational belief, with Christian extremism spending the most time in my crosshairs. However, it is time to give secular humanism more of the attention it deserves. What is Secular Humanism?Secular Humanism is much broader than atheism and entails many things that atheism does not. This will be easy to grasp if you remember that atheism refers to nothing more than the lack of belief in any sort of gods. So what is secular humanism?Start with humanism itself. According to Paul Kurtz, "Humanism is an ethical, scientific, and philosophical outlook" which can be traced "back to the philosophers and poets of ancient Greece and Rome, Confucian China, and the Charvaka movement in classical India." Humanism is an optimistic stance, entailing "confidence in the power of human beings to s...
A Humanist Lesson: The Prayer of Serenity
2007-04-14 12:39:00
Christians believe that their holy text, the Bible, is the inerrant word of God. They believe it can be referred to as a complete guide on how to live your life and secure salvation. However, the religion has also produced an abundance of extra-biblical teachings and doctrines. Many of these reflect the ...
The Humanist Symposium, humanism, and a few thoughts

Stonehenge, Still A Humanist Wonder.
2007-02-08 02:39:02
Stonehenge. The mere mention of the name invokes images of magic. Long thought to be some sort of ancient observatory, it has been associated with with Celts, Gauls and even Egyptians. In more legendary terms, Stonehenge has been also associated with druids, Merlin and even extraterrestrial aliens. Considered one of the world’s most mystical places, Stonehenge has remained shrouded in mystery and wonder. A recent project headed up by 100 archaeologist from around Great Britain has discovered some interesting new evidence which may suggest something entirely different for the Neolithic monument. The scientists discovered a sister site just a couple miles away from Stonehenge called Durrington Walls. This site is once believed to have been similar to Stonehenge in construction but constructed out of timber and housing. Durrington Walls housed the people and Stonehenge was the burial site. An avenue connected the two sites and also followed along the river. Apparently the t...
A Humanist Night Out At Cirque Du Soleil.
2007-01-24 02:27:01
Cirque Du Soleil is one of the most wonderful troupes on the planet.  Their shows are sensory festivals that are a humanists dream.  They extol dreams and imagination combined with incredible artistry, physical amazement and enchanting music. I have seen 7 different Cirque Du Soleil shows and have never seen a bad one.  Some are better than others of course, but the Montreal based troupe never dissappoints. Cirque is in town with their new show Corteo.  A dreamlike piece that takes place at the main character’s funeral.  A bit odd, but the avant-garde Cirque always is. This was probably the best show I’ve seen so far.  Maybe it was just my personal taste, but the show and the costumes were incredible and the music was absolutely perfect.  I think the biggest element that made this show so great was the story itself.  Each Cirque Du Soleil show has a framing story that the show is built around.  It’s always creative and the costumes are usually fabulous, but for som...
The Modern Humanist Life Path Part 2: Experience.
2007-01-12 14:22:02
Not that we have talked about learning, we move on to the second element in the Modern Humanist Life Path; experience.  Experience can mean a lot of different things and all of those meanings may apply, but the one we are going to focus on here is the verb experience. This is the doing version of the word.  The action of experience.  This is the encouragement to go out and experience life, not as a spectator, but as a participant. This may seem odd, but it isn’t.  There is a very different feel of simply “being” and “experiencing”  one is passive, the other is active.  If your only aim is to just “be” then you can literally stop where you are, sit down and never get up again.  Regardless of what happens, you will simply be. When we seek to experience, we have to get involved, we have to go out and see, touch, taste, feel and hear the world and everything in it.  Just like you can read books and watch movies and television and hear stories ab...
A Humanist Alternative for the Dalits
2006-12-09 09:07:02
Untouchables, or achuta, perform jobs considered unfit for higher castes, which includes tanning animal hides, manually unclogging sewers and toilets, cremating the dead, and removing road-kill from the streets.International Humanist News 12/8/06The emancipation of Dalits started as an essentially Humanist movement, but as the movement grew politically, the Humanist element has been lost. It is high time the Humanist alternative be made available again to the Dalits, writes V.B. Rawat.Dr. Ambedkar's RevolutionThrough his writings on the Indian social structure, through his analysis and criticism of Hindu thought and mythology, and through the political mobilization of the masses around their problems, Dr. Ambedkar, himself a Dalit and also father of the Indian Constitution, inaugurated a social and political revolution in which the Dalits were active participants. Underlying this approach was Dr. Ambedkar's realization that political empowerment of the Dalits was possible only on ...

Humanist Book Review: The Intellectual Devotional.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
You may have seen this book in your local store or heard about it on the radio or perhaps not. If you have heard of it and don’t have it or you haven’t heard of it - I encourage you to go check it out and pick it up (you can follow a link and grab it below). This book is a perfect symbol of Modern Humanism. It emphasizes learning and knowledge as well as secular philosophy and also is a complete celebration of humanity. The book contains 365 entries for each day of the year (not dated so you can start whenever you like) and gives one-page daily lessons on topics drawn from the seven fields of knowledge; History, Literature, Visual Arts, Science, Music, Philosophy and Religion. Each lesson covers a topic like Hemingway, The Torah, The Concept of Time, Socrates, Noah, The Placebo Effect or Ancient Greece. This primer is not only filled with great information, but also thought provoking ideas and concepts that can help fuel discussions afterward. For the well read, it ...
Friday Humanist Musing.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
There are many activities that many people think they can perform, but most actually can’t because they are actually activities that require skill and talent. There can be many examples of this, but the two that spring to mind are singing and writing.  Most people think they can sing (to a degree) but most really can’t.  Nothing against them, but in reality, singing is a developed skill requiring much practice to be decent, just like any instrument.  No one would think they could sit down at a piano and just play without training, so why would singing be any different? Writing is the other victim in this scheme.  Almost everyone thinks they can write, and write well, but once again most can’t.  These folks would never believe they could sit down and just draw a great masterpiece, but writing is something everyone can do easily.  But in truth, writing is an art form that takes as much skill as any other. I use these as examples, because there is one other place wher...
Modern Humanist Inspiration.
2006-09-16 03:00:01
As I traveled around the blogosphere, I read some stories about banned books and banned art. I also thought about how polarized and angry so many people seem to be as they fervently defend their ideals and attack those who disagree. As I breathed in all this anger, I thought what a joy it was to be a Modern Humanist and have all this beauty and wonder and art to choose from in all corners of the world. Inspiration is the lifeblood of humanity. It feeds us, entertains us, educates us and drives us. Inspiration helps us become better friends, better citizens and better humans. Inspiration is that feeling of being transported. Whether it is a story that takes us to another world, a painting that shows us another place or a piece of music that takes us on an emotional journey. Each small journey brings us not only to place outside day to day existence, but also introduces us to what could be. Inspiration whisks us to that place of infinite possibility where every idea is amazing and ev...
Welcome to Modern Humanist.
2006-08-21 20:15:12
As you can see this is a new site.  It’s purpose is to offer a view of Modern Humanism and it’s place in the world and community, not only as life philosophy, but as a beacon for rational and thinking minds that believe that life can be lived not only well, but inspired, without the need for or desire for supernatural forces, limiting beliefs and traditions or hateful, divisive and violent practices that only serve the segregation, isolation and destruction of community rather than the harmony, equality and unity of it. Modern Humanist will also present understanding, perspective and practical wisdom on how to incorporate humanist principals into life and community and how to serve as an example to and for others. Lastly, Modern Humanist seeks to provide viable answers and life perspectives to the community to illustrate that humanists are not only as moral, neighborly and dedicated to freedom as any church-going person, but also to help illustrate that the philosophical...
