CRAIGSLIST THE MUSICAL
2012-01-18 18:38:00 CBC broadcaster Bill Richardson and singer/songwriter Veda Hille are the culprits behind the quirky new musical, Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata. The show is a musical parody based largely on Craigslist want-ads and the theme of humanity in the age of social networking and exchange. It will make its big debut at this year's PuSh International Performing Arts Festival in Vancouver, Canada. Expect lots of laughs and weirdness like irregular cat hats, mounted lobsters, and a slew of other want-ad mentions.

Mike Keneally, Marco Minnemann: Evidence of Humanity new CD and DVD
2011-09-02 18:44:00 Mike Keneally (guitar); Marco Minnemann (drums) buy One bright morning, world-renowned drummer Marco Minnemann settled down behind the DW kit in his secluded hideaway, punched the record button, and proceeded to pound out an astounding 52-minute improvised solo. When it was finished, he christened it Normalizer 2 and offered it as a sort of gift to a handful of his favorite guitarists, relishing the prospect of each adding his own signature madness to the mix. Mike Keneally was someone Marco hoped would dig the idea. In the throes of recording his intense and complex Scambot 1 opus, Mike leapt at Marco's offer? the creation of Evidence of Humanity would be a joyous, freewheeling counterpoint to his meticulous work on Scambot. "A fun ride," Mike would recall. The ecstatic result is two of the world's foremost musicians improvising together, but not at the same time. It's a record unlike any other that Mike has recorded (but probably closest to Nonkertompf, his indefinable, mo...
A great sign of humanity
2011-02-21 06:33:00 For those who aren't aware, major protests have been going on in Madison, WI over the governor's proposal to strip all state and local employees, except for law enforcement and firefighters, of their collective bargaining rights on anything other than salary. With regard to that, a friend of mine posted a photo on Facebook that I found to be so touching and very similar to what couchsurfing is about. The photo shows a young man holding a sign saying Egypt Supports Wisconsin, One World, One Pain. I thought that was so cool that a guy in Egypt would be thinking of my little home state of Wisconsin and feeling their pain. This great sign of humanity is so closely related to couchsurfing,...

Update: Duch guilty of crimes against humanity
2010-07-26 08:05:00 ... and is sentenced to 35 years in jail. It was the first verdict (Case Number One) in the Khmer Rouge trials and, according to the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor who was providing a live blogging update, emotions were running high inside the jam-packed ECCC courtroom when the verdict was announced. Many people were crying. Out in the capital's streets, particularly in our area, the road was noticeably quiet with less vehicles; most Cambodians were probably indoors watching the whole proceedings with much anticipation. Duch looked impassive as judges find him guilty of crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Convention. According to the verdict summary blogged live by the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor:Duch is not personally criminally responsible for the crimes at S-21... that is, the evidence is insufficient to conclude that he murdered or tortured anyone himself...But he is guilty by Joint Criminal Enterprise on a systematic level.Duch was "deeply enmeshed" at the c...

Palin's Newest Crime Against Humanity: An Ugly Fence
2010-06-24 21:39:00 -By Warner Todd Huston It must have been a slow news day for the Washington Post's Adrian Higgins. Either that or someone made him upset that day and he wanted to take some anger out on someone and get paid for it at the same time. Catharsis doesn't come free from a journalist, you know? So, looking for some payback, Higgins decided a petty attack upon Sarah Palin would be cheaper than a visit to his therapist. Besides, Palin is always the Old Media's favorite target for venomous attack so he obviously didn't have to think too hard in the effort. But, since Sarah hadn't been in the news over the last several days, Higgins must have had a hard...
Insight To The Image Of Humanity Blog
2010-06-08 08:32:00 I revisited Sarah's Circle today. You can ready about my first visit here. On my way there, I realized that my visits to provide portraits to the homeless were on pause for quite some time...mainly from being so busy with the launch of my new website. I think at some point I started to get comfortable with approaching various non-profits and helping them raise awareness for their cause. I walked in feeling good about what I was doing as I normally do, even though at times I feel alone and even though I know that some people question why I'm doing this. The staff there had announced my visit and that I was providing portraits for anyone that wanted one. ...

One and Other: 100 days of raw humanity as art
2009-07-25 16:30:00 There is a plinth at Trafalgar Square in London, England that will host 100 days and nights of human performance/intervention/being- in what may be the longest art performance ever mounted. Certainly one of the oddest. But also perhaps most apropo for a time whose shiniest cultural trait is a willingness to participate in making culture rather than (only) consuming it.
Spirit of Humanity in Gaza (Free Gaza Movement)

2009-06-18 10:04:00 Last week Foster + Partners launched the design of a school in Sierra Leone at the Royal Academy?s Summer Exhibition in London. The project was developed in cooperation with Save the Children among others, and integrates passive ventilation systems and natural lighting.Foster argues that it is based on a modular system that can be quickly assembled with conventional stock wood, local brush-sticks, and sheet metal. This gives the project some environmental advantages. Whats more, the modules can also be easily reconfigured to adjust to the specific needs of varying districts in Sierra Leone. So the project is not only smart, it saves the children and the earth too. Where I come from we say "thats a lot of bang for your buck right there!"Starchitects worldwide should take note and follow the lead of Mr Foster. Why? Because this one is a token that comes straight from his heart. One only has to look around at the current economic and social climate. We are in a financial crisis caused by...
I'm trying to get the message out to warn humanity.
2009-06-13 13:44:00 What's the single greatest problem facing humanity today? If you said "finding good, low-priced used Mazda Parts," well, I have to tell you that you're wrong. Sure, finding good cheap auto parts online WAS a problem, but it's not any longer, because if you just go to quality auto parts.com,(or, as the net puts it, www.qualityautoparts.com) you can find and order parts for your car or truck online and save tons of money. Which can be handy, in a couple of ways. Or a three-ful of ways: First, it can be handy if you're a fixer-upper kind of guy: you know what parts you need and you know how to put them in, so why pay premium prices? Getting them online is cheaper and cheaper is better.Second, if you use a mechanic, you can order the parts yourself and avoid a hefty markup on them: Again, cheaper = better.Third, if you get your auto parts online, you'll not only get the right part cheaper, but you'll have a working car for when the Earth must face the ACTUAL greatest proble...
Experience as a Survival Imperative, for Humanity and Our Earth
2009-06-02 18:16:00 Elemental Beauty - Image c Lynda Lehmann 2009A few days ago I read Robb's post Troubled Waters, at Musings at Aorotea. Robb's posts always resonate with me. They speak truths that many of us don't take the time to articulate, and his passion and wisdom inspire me. You might want to go over to read it and see if you feel the same way. Robb's heartfelt post moved me to write this related post.Thinking about Robb's words, I remembered canoeing on stretches of the Delaware in places where my oar could not cut through the tangle of weeds nurtured by fertilizer runoff from surrounding farms. It was literally impossible to pull an oar through that underwater thicket. I'm sure that over the years, many would-be canoers have had to turn back when the going got tough, as we did. It was difficult and very sad to have to explain to our then six-year-old daughter, why we couldn't continue downstream.I've seen pristine jewels of azure blue lakes...

The Humanity of it: A Brief History of Humanism in less than Thousand Words
2009-02-27 05:01:00 It may have been the Sophists of ancient Greece who have first put humanity on the ?map? and given humans a philosophical context. It was a step away from the pre-Socratic philosophers who were mostly interested in the phusis, the physical elements of nature. Yet after Protagoras man was suddenly made the ?measure of all things? and was a subject worth studying. Socrates, in fact, realized that every human being had a universal capacity; regardless of sex or social status; everyone could reason and through logic and the constant questioning of values they could be able to attain states of truth and wisdom. One of the points Socrates may not have been completely agreeing with is the Sophist claim that truth is relative and merely depends on one?s culture and upbringing. The practical Romans were less interested in the study of humanistic values, but preferred to look for bravery and heroism in each individual, in addition to politics and rhetoric, of how to manipulate people and gain ...

Some (Imperfect) Humanity From John W. McBush
2008-08-19 20:00:00 I didn?t watch any of that Saddleback business the other night between the presumptive nominees for president, partly because I think the whole exercise was meant to inflate the profile of Rick Warren beyond what I believe he deserves (I realized later that I should have given my post on this last Thursday the hardly-original title of ?The Purpose-Drive Hype?).Of course, though, you can expect those individuals in our corporate media who claim some notion of spirituality (such as Michael Gerson of the WaPo here) to state decisively that his performance in this forum somehow represented a victory for John W. McBush. See, Obama?s cool detachment, as Gerson sees it, is a vice, whereas McBush?s ability to provide snap answers thus humanizes him in our eyes (implying that Obama is some sort of an automaton; one of the reasons I hate to hear politicians talk about faith like this is because it?s so damn easy for pundits to spin these exercises anyway they want). As Gerson tells us, though,...

The future of humanity?
