Humble Pie - Smokin? [1972]
2008-01-12 19:10:00 After a couple of years of relentless touring, Humble Pie capitalized on their loyal U.S. following to capture the market with this, their third album. Although lead guitarist Peter Frampton was replaced by Clem Clemson ? an excellent player ? the band remained essentially the same. Led by singer/guitarist Steve Marriot's soulful wail, the group enjoyed a huge hit from this record, "30 Days in the Hole" ? the track which defined the Pie's not-so-subtle appeal. The rest of the record is equally funky and intriguing. Stephen Stills guests on "Road Runner 'G' Jam," playing some nasty Hammond organ fills. In the end though, the group defined themselves as the undisputed leaders of the boogie movement in the early 1970s, as a band. In my mind, I am still thinking, "we lost to the Texas Rangers?"...Well, if you are going to lose real bad, make it memorable.Ok, so tonight's game was a total fluke. I'll say Wednesday night was one of the most fun nights of my life recently. With pretty much open seating tonight here (one of the ushers told me as I entered in the lower bowl, "sit where you want, just don't sit in the first row..."), you knew the night was going to be something else...After we gave up the 23rd & 24th run, most fans were besides themselves and started rooting for the Rangers. The two CD, 31 track ?Hot ?n? Nasty? Anthology covers their first 9 albums from 1969-1975 which is their best material and beyond so it goes a little farther than it needs to, but everything here is great. 2007-04-29 20:08:00 Remember this post where I worried about how I would let go of my need for things being done my way?Yeah, I guess you could say that being knocked on your ass has a way of making you appreciate every bit of help people offer.My in-laws drove all night to be here to care for Peanut so that I wouldn't have to worry about him being cared for. They are staying until after the baby is born. They could be here for over 3 weeks. I couldn't have made it these past few days without them.My kitchen linen drawer is not organized, nor are any of my cabinets. The dishwasher is being loaded "incorrectly". Peanut is a little off of his schedule.Guess what? I don't care. It doesn't matter to me. My MIL, who is just spectacular, has cooked, cleaned, tended to my family, and changed some king-size crap diapers. Also featuring ex-Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley along with drummer Jerry Shirley, the fledgling group spent the first several months of its existence locked away in Marriott's Essex cottage, maintaining a relentless practice schedule.
