Equipment Cooling and Humidity Challenge
2008-08-19 16:03:00 Imagine a system of closed equipment cases where each case (about 3 cubic feet in volume) includes a 5000 BTU evaporator (Part of a R134 cooling system) and a 450 CFM fan on one end. There is some control via a thermal expansion valve in the refrigerant line. The case is ducted such that air flows f

2008-08-12 07:41:00 This balinesse inspired "gateway" is on the main toll road into Jakarta from the airport. Photographing from a moving car is always a challenge, and I have missed this gate before so I had my camera set on burst (multishoot) mode and managed to get a few reasonable shots but I really wanted things to be a bit sunnier, so maybe another day!
Sticky Gecko Feet: The Role Of Temperature And Humidity
2008-05-21 07:21:00 A team of five University of Akron researchers were surprised to find that both temperature and humidity variation have an effect on gecko’s ability to cling to glass. ?For example, under very humid conditions, geckos stick with twice the force compared to dry conditions at low temperatures. At high temperatures, geckos stick comparatively poorly and the ...

2008-04-12 16:17:00 I need to control the humidity inside a little chamber from ambient (about 40-50% in my place) down to about 18% at least. I heard that there are problems with cheap humidity gauges when dealing with low humidities, and that they do not provide accurate measurement. I will be grateful if somebody ca
Spring Hair Tips for Combat Humidity of the Season
2008-03-28 15:32:00 This spring, don’t hide your hair under hats and in ponytails. Own your hair, flaunt your hairstyles and take a stand against humidity! The spring months are upon us and during this season, the well-known grade rhyme, “April showers bring May flowers”, seems to sum it up best. But although this phrase puts a positive spin ...

Humidor Cigar Retain Their Optimum Humidity Levels If Kept At Right Tempera
2008-03-28 06:00:00 The humidor cigar should be aerated a minimum of once in a fortnight so that the cigars get adequate as well as regular supply of fresh air since cigar tobacco is known to breathe and cigars use up oxygen as well as emit gases into the air and so require regular aerating so that they ...

Setting up a Humidity Tray
2008-01-22 15:57:00 Before I set up a humidity tray for my bonsai I hadn't realised how quickly water could evaporate in my flat. The idea of the tray is to increase the moisture in the air around indoor bonsai which are used to growing in a warm, humid environment. A modern apartment may provide the heat that the tree requires but it is a dry heat which leaves the bonsai drying up because of lack of moisture. Daily misting helps but it is a temporary thing whereas the humidity tray is there to help raise the moisture levels in the air throughout the day. It's easy to set up a humidity tray. You just need a tray with raised edges and a water-tight bottom. Position your bonsai on the tray. Then get some pebbles or gravel and line the tray. Once you've this done you just add water and there you go! Pour water over the gravel just being careful not to overflow the tray. Also be careful that the bonsai are sufficiently raised so as to be above the water level. You want the water to evaporate off the p...

Global Humidity
2007-10-10 23:36:00 It’s common to confuse current weather for long term climate change, and on hit sticky days I’ve heard people joke that the real problem isn’t global warming but global humidity. The bad news is that there’s evidence that global warming might also make the humidity worse: The world isn’t just getting hotter from man-made global warming, ...

Humidity control
2007-09-23 22:52:00 Refrigeration air conditioning equipment usually reduces the humidity of the air processed by the system. The relatively cold (below the dewpoint) evaporator coil condenses water vapor from the processed air, (much like an ice cold drink will condense water on the outside of a glass), sending the water to a drain and removing water vapor from the cooled space and lowering the relative humidity. Since humans perspire to provide natural cooling by the evaporation of perspiration from the skin, drier air (up to a point) improves the comfort provided. The comfort air conditioner is designed to create a 40% to 60% relative humidity in the occupied space. In food retailing establishments large open chiller cabinets act as highly effective air dehumidifying units. Some air conditioning units dry the air without cooling it, and are better classified as dehumidifiers. They work like a normal air conditioner, except that a heat exchanger is placed between the intake and exhaust. In combinatio...

Air Movement to Gain Control Over Temperature, Humidity & CO2
2007-08-16 06:04:00 In addition to light and carbon dioxide all plants, whether they are grown in soil or in indoor grow rooms, need a steady supply of fresh air. While this is achieved naturally in outdoor gardens, fields, farms etc., in hydroponics gardening special means have to adopted to ensure air movement for continual supply of fresh air. This is done using fans blowers and associated equipment. As air that becomes stale can no longer support plant growth it has to be vented while fresh air has to be introduced to take its place. Providing a well designed system for the movement of air inside the grow room therefore assumes paramount importance in hydroponics.Air movement helps maintain ideal levels of several parameters such as temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide in the grow room. These parameters need to be effectively controlled in order to avoid a number of problems. Though complete control over these parameters is not required, some control has to be provided for to ensure that vital ...

2007-07-19 23:24:00 After clicking together my ruby slippers(well, my hiking boots which for a brief time were stained with pink paint, so I guess that counts) I finally have made it back home. I stepped out of TPA right into this soup that those of us around here call air. I do have to give kudos to Frontier Airlines, my new favorite budget carrier. The little TVs are awesome, the seats quite comfy, and we were, gate to gate, right on time with no hassles at all. Suck it Southwest. We flew our plane from Alaska to Boulder. Many shades of summer, it was nice and moderate in Anchorage, and Juneau. Then it just started getting warmer from Seattle to oven-like Boise and Boulder(104 and 98 respectively, but it's a dry heat(that makes the turkey feel better too I'm sure)), to the swampiness of good old Tampa Bay. One thing that struck me my first days back were just how aggressive the drivers are here. I guess being immersed in it here and in New England I was just conditioned, but getting away...

PTS Weighs in on Data Center Humidity Issues
2007-07-16 15:59:00 Mark Fontecchio’s recent article on data center humidity issues at SearchDataCenter.com not only created buzz in the data center blogs, but generated quite a discussion amongst our team at PTS Data Center Solutions.Data center humidity range too strict? While some data center professionals find the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)’s recommended relative humidity of 40% to 55% to be restrictive, I think the tight ASHRAE standards have to be adhered to until further research proves otherwise.PTS’s engineering manager, Dave Admirand, PE notes that the reason the telecommunications industry is able to operate within a wider humidity range of 35% to 65% is because of their very strict grounding regimen. In a well grounded system an electrical charge has no place build up and is more readily dissipated to ground. Mr. Admirand recalls his days at IBM when the ‘old timers’ would swear by wearing leather soled shoes (conductive enoug...

Humidity Hassle - Don't Let the High Humidity Get You Down
2007-05-04 10:39:00 It's that time of year again when the temperature and humidity start rising and you begin cranking the thermostat down to remain comfortable. How many times have you heard people say: "It's not the heat, it's the humidity?" According to experts they just might be right. Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Missouri have some of the most humid climates in the nation, and possibly some of the highest energy costs. To combat humidity discomfort, many homeowners in the South find themselves cranking up the air conditioning thinking it will remove the excess moisture. But not only will this increase the humidity in your home, it can cause your energy bill to skyrocket. "Setting the thermostat temperature lower counters your goal of reducing the moisture content in your home," states Neil Moyer, Principal Research Engineer for Florida Solar Energy Center. "It actually increases the indoor relative humidity, and more importantly, it decreases the temperature of the materials in the ...
