Humility through Identity
2008-06-02 14:26:00 I was reading through John 13 this morning. I've read the passage many times... but something just stuck out at me. I love when that happens... you're reading over a passage that you've read umpteen times and all of a sudden Holy Spirit opens your eyes to something you've never seen.Check this...John 13:2-4 says "It was time for supper, and the devil had already enticed Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to carry out his plan to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given Him authority over everything and that He had come from God and would return to God. So He got up from the table, took off His robe, wrapped a towel around His waist..." (emphasis added)Then He began to wash His disciples feet.Check out the "so".Jesus knew who He was. He knew He was the Son of God. He knew He was One with God. He knew He had all authority. So...I wonder... was it because Jesus knew fully who He was that He was able to operate in true humility? There was no false-pride going on on Jesus' part...

Princess Lessons ~ Humility
2008-05-24 16:46:00 Over the past few months I’ve been addressing several of the virtues of a Princess, kindness, grace, honour and duty. Today I would like to explore a virtue that is more misunderstood, but equally as valuable as all of these; Humility. Unfortunately in modern times we’ve developed some false connotations for this word; blind obedience, self ...

A short anecdote on humility
2008-03-19 08:31:00 I love Fr. Jerry Orbos' short but witty anecdote. A child once asked his father: "Why do I need to be humble?"His father replied: "My child, when you choose the lowly path, there is no place to fall and the only way is up."and then there's this...A thought to ponder, from a blood donor: I gave blood, He gave His life; I gave a pint, He gave it all; the needle was short and sharp, the nails were large and dull; the cot was soft and restful, the cross was rough and hard; the med tech was kind and gentle, the soldiers were mean and cruel; the crowd applauded my sacrifice, He was derided and reviled; mine was given to prolong life, His was given for eternal life.Hope each of us will learn humility while we are still "human".

Humility certainly has a price tag!
2008-02-13 20:48:00 I'm a guest writer on this amazing blog. I am excited to be a part of it!I gave up make up for lent. For some of the natural beauties in the world (or men), this would not be a big deal. It is for me! My long history with make up has been one of necessity beginning in high school. Every day I do (did) my routine of eye liner, shadow, mascara, foundation, and lipstick. It makes me feel together and externally beautiful, so lacking this is definitely a lesson in vulnerability and humility.I know I look different. One of my teacher co-workers said, "Oh, you still look beautiful!" However, I can see myself in the mirror... Several of my students told me yesterday, my first day of work with my new look, "Mrs. K, you look different." They then proceeded to stare at me for several minutes, puzzled. As I have walked through my daily life "au natural," it makes me self conscious. I realize how much I judge others on their looks as I now feel exposed in mine. How much do you depend on your loo...

What's This Humility Stuff?
2008-01-03 21:38:00 From Easy Does It, Jan. 3:" To give something for the sheer joy of giving is the strongest step we can take in achieving the humility that is so vital to us. Humility is essential to our spiritual progress, and our spiritual progress is a necessary part of our recovery ".When I first came into program, I thought that humility and humiliation were the same thing. And frankly, at that point in my life, I had had plenty humiliation. I wasn't looking for more, and hoped that it wouldn't find me. But I soon learned the difference between these two very similar words. Humility means that it's okay to be human, okay to make mistakes, okay to need help. It took me a while to be able to accept all these things. It took even longer to be able to ask another person for help, without feeling humiliated by this need. But the 12 Step Program helps us to develop this ability, and even to be grateful for it. By asking someone to sponsor us, we are admitting that we can't do it on our own anymo...

Humility: A Lost Art?
2007-11-29 00:15:00 We have prided ourselves to live in a society of educated, sophisticated, and modern people. However, does it justify our rudeness, our unforgiving attitude, or our self-serving personality? Humility is a virtue that needed to be rediscovered in our lives. It needs to be cultivated if we desire to live peacefully and in accord with our community. How do we start? We can start by being sensitive to others feelings and stature. To illustrate this point, I came across a story* about Professor Stuart Blackie of the University of Edinburg who, many years ago, was listening to his students as they presented oral readings. When one young man rose to begin his recitation, he held his book in the wrong hand. The professor thundered, ?Take your book in your right hand, and be seated!?At this harsh rebuke, the student held up his right arm. He did not have a right hand! The other students shifted uneasily in their chairs. For a moment, the professor hesitated. The he made his way to th...

Marc Driscoll on the Church's Lack of Humility
2007-11-10 00:57:00 Here's a portion of a sermon Marc Driscoll gave recently. He speaks of his lack of humility being the one thing he'd change if he could do it over. Here he is sharing a problem he sees sprouting up in the church:And I believe that it is showing up in our church in the lives of men and women who have sound doctrine but not sound attitude. They may contend for good things but their motives are bad and their methods are bad and their tone is bad and their tactics are bad and their actions are bad because their attitudes are bad even though their objective is sometimes good. I see this in particular with the men. I see this with men young and old, men who have known Jesus for a long time and should know better, and men who are new to Jesus and are learning sometimes the hard way.Can I get an Amen!

Arsenal have without doubt raised their game, and it shows. Humility is not Humiliation
2007-10-18 08:53:00 From 24 Hours a Day, Oct. 18: Not until you have failed can you learn true humility.Humility arises from a deep sense of gratitude to G-d for giving you the strength to rise above past failures. Humility is not inconsistent with self-respect. ... The humble person is tolerant of others' failings and does not have a critical attitude toward the foibles of others....This is certainly true. Failing at things puts everything in a different light. When I have failed at something, it teaches me that life isn't always so slick and easy. It teaches me that I have to work at it, often failing numerous times before I can learn a skill or "get it right". When I think of a baby who is learning to walk, I can see her taking one step, then falling, but getting right up again. She doesn't give up and say "I think I'll just keep crawling for the rest of my life".By failing and then trying again, I learn to appreciate that others will also fail at the things they attempt, and this gives me tol...

2007-10-04 14:18:00 Since it went over so well with my readers last time I combined my Thursday Thirteen post with my Train Up A Child post, I decided to do it again. Enjoy!HUMIL'ITY, n. [L. humilitas.]1. In ethics, freedom from pride and arrogance; humbleness of mind; a modest estimate of one's own worth. In theology, humility consists in lowliness of mind; a deep sense of one's own unworthiness in the sight of God, self-abasement, penitence for sin, and submission to the divine will.2. Act of submission. With these humilities they satisfied the young king.In today's culture humility is often a virtue that is frowned upon. It is also a virtue that is hard to maintain. Humility is a fleeting thing. The moment you think you are humble you have ceased to be so. Ironically, according to scripture those who are humble are the ones that receive honor. There is great reward to the one who has a humble spirit. Humility is a virtue that adults should pursue as well as model for and teach to our ch...

Where does humility fit in?
2007-09-26 16:04:00 From Growing Each Day, Sept.26,2007 (Tishrei 13)-How can one remain humble when one exercises great authority and is the recipient of homage and adulation? "Simple," said Rabbi Moshe of Kobrin."If a king hangs his crown on a peg in the wall, would the peg boast that its extreme beauty drew the king's attention to it?....one peg may be higher on the wall than another, but that does not make it a better peg. "This sounds amazing. It puts people in their place, which is exactly where each of us is supposed to be. Since we each have our own job to do, it doesn't really matter which job one has, as long as we each do it to the best of our ability right now at this moment. That means that if I have a headache, and I can only function at 80% of what I might usually be able to do- that's okay, because it's the best I can do right now. More than this, it also means that if someone else is the manager, and I am the worker, it doesn't mean that his job is more important than mine is; it j...

Humility in a Mass Culture
2007-05-28 20:38:00 On the Chabad.org website, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the chief rabbi of Great Britain, shares his thoughts about the "lost virtue" of humility in a mass culture where our fears of anonymity and loneliness drive us to frantic self-display: Humility is the orphaned virtue of our age. Charles Dickens dealt it a mortal blow in his portrayal of the unctuous Uriah Heep, the man who kept saying, "I am the 'umblest person going." Its demise, though, came a century later with the threatening anonymity of mass culture alongside the loss of neighbourhoods and congregations. A community is a place of friends. Urban society is a landscape of strangers. Yet there is an irrepressible human urge for recognition. So a culture emerged out of the various ways of "making a statement" to people we do not know, but who, we hope, will somehow notice. Beliefs ceased to be things confessed in prayer and became slogans emblazoned on t-shirts. A comprehensive repertoire developed of signalling individuality, fro...

A Lesson In Humility
2007-03-10 01:48:01 There was a young man who desired humility. He went to an old wise man and said to him, “Sir, I wish to be humble, but I don?t know how to obtain it. What must I do to acquire humility?” The old wise man thought for a minute and replied, “Here is what you should do? go out and find someone who is beneath you and do something nice for him. Give him something that you have or do something for him that needs to be done.” The young man replied, “I can do that!” He immediately left and came upon a homeless man on the street who looked like he had not eaten in days. He took the man to a restaurant and bought him a nice hot meal. After he dropped off the homeless man, the young man, who was feeling pretty good, returned to the wise man and told him what he had done. He then asked him, “Do I now have humility?” The wise old man replied, “Not yet!” The young man?s face fell and after a while, he asked the wise man, “What else ...
Gateway of humility
2007-02-23 07:25:04 If you think about it, life isn't always a smooth journey. Many of us have "close calls" where it may seem like death missed us by a whisker. Did you have an experience where you came to assume that it wasn't your time? Did you approach the gateway of humility and realize you're not meant to have access to all the answers? Maybe you realized that a far greater plan is at work?I knew a girl who was hit by a car and put into a coma. She ended up pulling out of it and later, regaining consciousness. She indicated her deceased grandmother had told her she'd be back another time. The doctors didn't believe her. Her family wasn't sure if she was hallucinating. She chose to believe her grandmother had become a guardian angel who still protected her.Alison Dubois' life is another reason to consider the possibility of guardian angels. The Seven Deadly Virtues: Humility
2007-01-24 14:54:01 Virtues (If you know what that word means. It’s hardly used anymore) are deadly. Not in the same way as vices, but they do kill you. What I want to do is help you understand the virtues that once were, and the only way to do that is for you to die. Are you shocked? You shouldn’t be. Saint Paul said “To die in the Lord is gain,” and that’s exactly what we are going to do. I hope by now the shock has worn off and you realize that I do not mean for you to physically cease to be. Physically dying would be a much easier but much less fruitful task. No, what we want to do is empty ourselves, to the point that we lose ourselves. Why would we want to do that? Well, let’s take a look at who we are. We are all selfish, self-righteous, prideful, arrogant, unloving, lying, envious and jealous people. In other words, “somethin’ done went wrong with us.” Do you not find any of those traits in you? If you don’t, please send m...

Humility - the example of Jesus
2006-08-18 21:28:00 In the book of John Chapter 1, John talks about Jesus. In the beginning was the word, the word was with God and the word was God. All things came into being through him.And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.What a glorious event in History! God became a human being. The Almighty God who created the Heavens and the earthcame down to earth from heaven and became a man. He emptied himself, took the position of a slave and identified himself as one with the human race. What an example to follow.Jesus considered others more important than himself and hence he had no problem in serving anyone. He came to serve and not to be served. Phillipians 2We as Human beings were infected with Pride way back in the garden of Eden, when Lucifer infected the human race with the spirit of Pride. Sin entered through pride and so Salvation can come only through humility, the opposite of pride.Christ asks us to follow him, in his humility. What do we have that we have not received.
