Requiem for Hunter S. Thompson
2008-05-04 15:09:00
It is time to mourn the untimely passing of another fine journalist. Hunter S. Thompson died tonight, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His wife, Anita, was at the gym at the time, leaving his son, Juan to find his father’s body around 5:30 Mountain time tonight. The call came in to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s office at 5:52 pm. Hunter S. Thompson documentary closes festival

Hunter S. Thompson luxuriated in being the center of attention. Imagine how the late journalist would have strutted, knowing that a documentary all about him was closing the San Francisco International Film Festival. He'd be first in line for "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson," wearing his trademark fisherman's hat and tinted aviator glasses, and brandishing a cigarette holder with ashes piling up - never mind the ban on smoking. The only thing that would have made him happier is if "Gonzo" were opening the festival Thursday. It somehow seems appropriate to end a 15-day marathon of 105 movies and special programs with a tribute to this occasional San Franciscan and master of gonzo journalism. He came up with "gonzo" to describe his freestyle, drugs- and booze-fueled writing found in books such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72." Chunks of both were composed in the Bay Area. While Thompson's home w...
Hunter S. Thompson, an appreciation I suppose...

Ever since 1993, when a kindly yet deeply warped soul gave me his battered copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to read, I have been enthralled and enlivened by the good doctor's writing, presence, soul and spirit. From the moment I finished the book, barely a day has gone past when I haven't thought about writing. Of creating some gigantic footprint on a cultural world. I have consumed his work in various media since then and have absorbed the belief, the inspiration to be my own writer and follow his and Orwell's fine doctrine to find my own voice.I have had what I believe to be not a unique experience but one that has probably been similar to many. I don't feel moved to buy a t-shirt, get a Gonzo tattoo, add a quote to the bottom of my emails or start shooting typewriters with highly powered firearms. I don't feel inclined to emulate his remarkable and sometimes harrowingly substance dependent life and experience. However, he is a true original, an exceptional and outstan...
Would you try it on a plane? Would you try it on a train?

Click on the image to the right to see the full size page.Writing about writing from new points of view made me think, ?Why does it add to your writing?? Well, it?s just a new point of view. When I was writing today?s page I was having a fine old time thinking of a Greek Orthodox priest putting himself in Hunter S Thompson?s shoes in Fear and loathing in Las Vegas. Just imagine the writing he?d produce. It certainly wouldn?t be the same as Thompson?s, but it would contain some mad element that the writer would never have dreamed of before. When you do this, all you?re really doing is learning about a side to the world that you?re not familiar with- you?re comparing your opinions to a situation, and describing your resultant action. It?s easy to have opinions of views and lifestyles, but most times we can?t back them up with the experience. It is a purely conceptual opinion. While writing about a situation does not give you the same experience as delving into it, it does allow you to a...

My thoughts on Hunter S.Thompson
2007-12-12 15:48:00
Some of my thoughts on Hunter S.ThompsonKentucky Derby Analysis:Hunter S. Thompson’s feature focuses not on the story, but on Thompson’s ability (or inability) to get his story. Though there is some reporting on the Derby, this consists of a single paragraph. Thompson emphasises the short nature of the race and gains all his information on the Derby from a rerun on television. He even admits that his assignment does not interest him as much as the chance to observe, and does not mention the Derby until the middle of the second sentence. As Thompson says however, nobody cares. His features are intensely descriptive and feature his encounters with others. Thompson always paints himself as never in the wrong. Even when describing an unfortunate dinner party, Thompson tries to make his illustrator Steadman the villain. However, Thompson does give Steadman’s side of the argument. Thompson isn’t afraid of revealing the deception he uses to find a story, nor is he ashamed about carr...

A Short Story by Hunter S Thompson

Burial At Sea This short story was published in the December 1961 issue of Rogue magazine, that also featured the breasts of the woman on the cover. The editorial calls this story it’s “lead fiction”. “When do we leave?” “Monday at dawn. Bring your gear aboard tomorrow and we’ll get it stowed away.” Laurenson stood up. “Good. We’d ...
