Rumble: Hurricane Felix
2007-09-17 08:20:00 As you might remember, I now work in the logistics section in HQ. First hand reports from disasters, conflicts, famine come in here pretty fast. Ebola outbreak in DRC, flooding in Ghana and Uganda, earthquakes in Colombia and Indonesia,... Most of these have an immediate and direct effect on the work we do, either in aid food dispatches or in the allocation of logistics support staff. One example is Hurricane Felix. Even though the hurricane occurred early September, and has long gone from the news headlines, people in Nicaragua are still dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.Pictures courtesy Mirjana Kavelj (WFP)

2007-09-07 23:08:00 Author: Eric Subject: Christian Groups Respond to Hurricane FelixPosted: Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:08 pm (GMT -4) Christian Groups Respond to Hurricane Felix Michelle Vu Christian humanitarian groups are tending to the needs of Hurricane Felix victims after this season’s second Category 5 hurricane slammed into Central America earlier this week. International aid agency World Vision has mobilized teams in Honduras and Nicaragua in the affected areas to determine the greatest needs. “Houses are destroyed along the Mosquito Coast,” said Oscar Chicas, World Vision’s emergency response director for Honduras, in a report. “We are worried that one of our programs may still be affected by flooding.” On Tuesday, Hurricane Felix smashed thousands of homes in Nicaragua and raised fears of floods and mudslides in neighboring Honduras. The death toll for Hurricane Felix is over 40 but could grow as the search teams continue to comb through the rubbles, The Associated Press reported Thurs...

Warnings From a Warming World: Hurricane Felix Makes Landfall as Second Cat
2007-09-04 20:33:00 Making landfall today as a devastating Category 5 storm, Hurricane Felix is the second Cat 5 Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in as many weeks, carving a path of destruction across Central America. As Chris Mooney points out at the Daily Green, Nature isn't messing around this year in the Atlantic hurricane basin. So far, we've already seen six named storms and two hurricanes, both making landfall as devastating Category 5 storms, shattering records and making landfall within two weeks of each other. And there's still a long way to go until the 2007 hurricane season has subsided. Like Hurricane Dean, which ripped across Mexico's Yucatan Penninsula on August 21st (see previous post), Hurricane Felix hit the coast of Nicaragua with Category 5 strength (Hurricane Katrina was made landfall near New Orleans as a Category 4 storm, for comparison), shattering several records. Also like Hurricane Dean, the appearance of a second, record-breaking storm in as many weeks must g...

Hurricane Felix Weakening; Links and Miscellany [The Intersection]
2007-09-03 20:45:00 Felix’s weakening has been fairly pronounced since this morning; it’s now a weak Category 4, though the hurricane guys expect a slight bounce-back before landfall. In the meantime, we’re in the waiting phase: The damage will depend upon the precise track, speed, and so on. No one can predict it in any detail, though there are certainly some bad rainfall-related scenarios for Central America. To pass the time, I pulled together some good links about Felix, which I’d encourage you to check out: The Flight of Their Lives? It was a hell of a reconnaissance mission into the explosively intensifying Felix last night. Jeff Masters relates the details. Which was the Real Anomalous Atlantic Hurricane Year, 2005 or 2006? The Houston Chronicle’s Eric Berger asks that question in a very thoughtful post. My answer: We may well go into a more El Nino-like world, but for the moment it sure looks like 2006 was the anomaly…not only a quieter year in a very active...
