McCain Did NOT Put Country First After Hurricane Katrina
2008-09-01 19:50:00
Oh yeah - both Obama and Biden were either co-sponsors of, voted for or drafted Katrina relief or oversight bills. Biden was the sponsor of Senate amendment 1661, which was to provide emergency funding to victims of Katrina. The vote failed 41-56, with McCain voting against it. As Geiger notes: Biden’s legislation would have provided ...

FEMA?s Valentine Message: Oops, We?ve Been Poisoning You
2008-02-14 21:14:00
Happy Valentine’s Day from the good folks at FEMA. Remember the trailers they provided to about 144,000 Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita victims? (No, not the acres of FEMA trailers that sat empty and unused in Arkansas fields, while FEMA paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in storage fees; that’s a different story.) Surprise! The trailers FEMA did supply to hurricane victims are toxic. They give the term “trailer trash” new meaning. The trailers contain high levels of formaldehyde ? a known carcinogen ? and are poisoning people, especially the elderly and the very young. About 40,000 people still live in FEMA hovels.

A decision has been issued in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, by Judge Stanwood R. Duval, Jr., dismissing the consolidated class action lawsuit against the United States Army Corps of Engineers for the failure of the Orleans Parish outfall canals and, in particular, the 17th Street Canal that allegedly accounted for approximately 80% of the flooding of downtown New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (“In Re: Katrina Canal Breaches Consolidated Litigation, No. 05-4182 E.D. La.).  The only remaining defendants are the Orleans Parish Levee Board and the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board. Judge Duval ruled that the 17th Street, London and Orleans Avenue outfall canals were federal flood control projects and therefore statutorily immune from suit under the Flood Control Act of 1928.  In an opinion that was very critical of the Corps of Engineers, Judge Duval stated the following:“While the United States government is ...

Hurricane Katrina and the Jena Six
2007-09-28 11:10:00
As hard as it is to believe, Hurricane Katrina sowed the seeds for the Jena Six case. How?Like this:On August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and southern Louisiana. Jena is in the north and was not hit hard by the storm. But in the months that followed the storm, thousands of refugees who had their homes destroyed flooded Louisiana, Texas and many other states in the US.200 of them came to Jena, Louisiana. And that is when all the trouble started.Previously, Jena was a small Southern town with the sort of juvenile problems, White and Black, that are typical of rural towns in this area. In other words, nothing out of the ordinary. There were little or no Black gang problems at the time. But the 200 Katrina refugees changed all of that. With them came a number of hardcore urban Black gangmembers from New Orleans. They influenced a number of the Black boys and young men in Jena, and turned some good Black males bad in a right hurry. Compared to before, crime and trouble expl...
GSA Streamlines Local Small Business Contracting on the Gulf Coast

As recently reported by Elise Castelli in the Federal Times, "The long slog to rebuild the Gulf Coast devastated by Hurricane Katrina might be gaining some speed."  A new order signed by GSA Administrator Lurita Doan will make it simpler and faster for the U.S. General Services Administration to award millions of dollars in recovery contracts to local small business in the Gulf Region supporting Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts.  Contracts for debris clearance, supply distribution, reconstruction and other disaster relief will be set aside for local businesses under the order.  "The order gives blanket justification for the set-aside awards, which will limit competition to local firms." "Local small businesses are the backbone of every community," said Administrator Doan. "Revitalizing the small businesses is one of the most significant ways we can aid in the recovery of the Gulf Coast region."   -...

Oil on Gessoed Board6" x 6" (15.2 x 15.2cm)Bid now for a good causeI found this girl on one of the pictures I took the Friday before Labor Day at the Stoney Creek park here in Michigan. My pictures are panoramic if you will and sometimes I capture many scenes with one shot which I later separate in my studio according to what I like. A girl playing in the sand and it looked like she had found something. What captured my attention about this scene was the soft light of 6:30pm gently but brightly illuminating the sand, the lake and the people still in it. The girl's hair wet and shinning with the light. This painting I'm listing it on eBay at auction for the Hurricane Katrina Rebuilding Project. What a better way to collect art than to help an organization and an effort that is really very much needed. So click on the link above and support this wonderful cause by bidding and winning this beautiful painting. If you can't bid, at least put it in your watch list on eBay so maybe it wo...

Blog: Hurricane Katrina 2 Years Ago on this Date
2007-08-29 12:23:00
Hurricane Katrina was 2 years ago on this date. In all my years of seeing a disasters I never seen something as bad as this event those pictures of this day will stay with me forever in my mind with tears. Those films of that event will never leave me or never forget the sad I felt in my heart. The visions of the people sitting on top of roofs, floating on debris to land, people sitting in wheel chairs, dead bodies covered and babies crying. The worst thing I ever seen on TV in the history of my life with the awful things that happened at the superdome that was hell for those people I think it is a crime with what happened to them with no help at all. The way the government handled this disaster was awful I never was more embarrassed than at that time being an American when our own government treated American citizen that way. Then later they stated didn?t know all the stuff was going on at the superdome when every darn news station at that time was covering the story of the horrifi...

Brad Pitt saying Hurricane Katrina a man made disaster not a natural disaster because of the engineering building levee issues. Brad Pitt on The Today Show NBC talking to Ann Curry I think he said some of the most interesting and smart things about this situation. Normally I don?t care about celebrities but the words he said really made me respect him as a human being with a heart and soul. I could tell he really cared about what he is talking about and wanting to change things for the better. Also talks about eco-friendly housing for the region with some interesting ideas. - Ann Curry Interview with Brad Pitt about Katrina Brad Pitt said some things I never thought about before but his words are smart his advice is good that is why I added him on my blog. In the news this week about should New Orleans be rebuilt again or not. I have mixed emotions on this I would love to see all those people be able to rebuild again. However, in reality I do fear the same thing could happen again e...

Animal Cruelty in Hurricane Katrina Aftermath
2007-06-13 14:27:00
Few things in this world truly piss me off, and animal cruelty happens to be near the top of the list. That's why this story got me hopping mad;ABC's Nightline described on Monday how, in the days following Hurricane Katrina, police killed many stranded pets that had been left behind by their owners. Residents of St. Bernard Parish have since claimed they were forced to leave behind their dogs, which were then wantonly killed by sheriff's deputies. The dog owners have filed a class action lawsuit, asserting their pets were executed in three schools that were supposed to serve as shelters. One woman told ABC of being forced under threat of being handcuffed to hand over the tiny poodle she never saw alive again. Animal rescuers spoke in tears of being prevented from helping and how how the animals were not killed mercifully but were shot from a distance in massive volleys that left bullet holes in school walls. The deputies have claimed they shot only dangerous animals, but anoth...
Hurricane Katrina Victims Need Help Yet - Politics, Sitting Empty Trailers,
2007-06-01 08:07:00
Hurricane Katrina Victims are still not getting the help they need I think that is just wrong. Some are still not getting assistants at all with many people still living in FEMA trailers today. While other people are homeless while empty FEMA trailers still sitting rotting away. For the reason that it is all about politics and government policies that no one can make a decision what to do with all those empty trailers that so many could be using them right at this moment. In my thinking mind with my common sense brain that does not make any sense to me with not to be using the trailers that just feels so wrong and stupid to me that I cannot believe politicians don?t think it is wrong and stupid too. Donated Money I remember at that time many donation drives and celebrity telethons today I wonder what happened to all that money. Millions of dollars raised what happened to it all that so many donated with caring hearts. People with no hearts I saw on the news the money was misused eve...
?Desert Bayou? Delves Deep Into Hurricane Katrina?s Human Psyche
2007-05-25 03:12:00
CHICAGO ? When Hurricane Katrina rocked New Orleans in 2005, Chicago filmmaker Alex LeMay became fixated on the soul behind the ruin.Without an investor, he hurried a producer on the scene two days after first contact. With thousands of news cameras already covering the cataclysmic events on 24-hour news channels, new-angled footage was scarce. ?Desert Bayou? director Alex LeMay.Photo courtesty of Taproot ProductionsEager to humanize a gripping subplot and stir thought-provoking reflection, LeMay?s muse came in the form of a ?cute? story in the New York Times.Distributed by Echelon Studios, ?Desert Bayou? chronicles 600 African-Americans who were airlifted from their Louisiana homes to a Mormon community in Utah.?While it might be cute, it?s based on tragedy,? LeMay said in an interview with Adam Fendelman. ?Everything about the evacuees from New Orleans is polar opposite to Utah. This is a story of below sea level, African-American, Baptist Democrats going into an above sea level, ...
John Edwards and Danny Glover Take Action in New Orleans
2007-05-11 18:09:00
Election 2008 On Friday May 4, 2007, John Edwards and Danny Glover were both in New Orleans to pitch in and help in the rebuilding effort after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The two spent their time there rebuilding homes and taking action. John Edwards was also there to talk about his plan to end poverty in America. ?What are we going to do about the 37 million, at least 37 million, of our own people who wake up everyday worried about feeding and clothing their children. I don?t know about you but I think it says something about the character of our country, how we treat those among us who are literally worried just about surviving. We are better than this. The United States of America is better than this.? John Edwards is organizing a National Poverty Action Day on May 19, where he is encouraging his supporters to go out into their communities and collect canned goods for local food banks. ?This is how we spent our morning, now what are you going to ...
Hurricane Katrina Woes Continue to Plague Bush Administration
2007-04-29 21:28:00
According to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the United States government squandered the offers of international aid which poured in following Hurricane Katrina. The story appeared in today's Washington Post, and it will be interesting to see if it receives the attention it deserves. In one exchange, State Department officials anguished over whether to tell Italy that its shipments of medicine, gauze and other medical supplies spoiled in the elements for weeks after Katrina's landfall on Aug. 29, 2005, and were destroyed. "Tell them we blew it," one disgusted official wrote. But she hedged: "The flip side is just to dispose of it and not come clean. I could be persuaded."How about some accountability? How about explaining why so much money never reached the Mississippi and Louisiana residents in need?Tags: Hurricane Katrina, Bush, Mississippi, Louisiana, government

Opening Old Wounds: 18 Months After Hurricane Katrina
2007-03-04 14:51:00
I just watched Spike Lee's outstanding documentary on Hurricane Katrina, When the Levees Broke. I thought I could handle it. After all, it has been 18 months since the hell that was Katrina, and I was spared most the agony many others experienced. It turned out to be an intense emotional blow, making me feel like it was happening all over again. I woke up this morning in the midst of a nightmare and ran to the window to make sure my property had survived. Now I just feel numb again, except for the flashes of rage directed toward the government who allowed the horrific aftermath to happen and who has yet to resolve the situation in Mississippi and Louisiana. This is a film every American needs to view, chronicling a disaster no American should be allowed to forget.Watching the images of Katrina was much harder than I expected. It brought back the vivid memories of seeing the devastation outside my window. I'll never forget the roar of that wind or the cracking of trees snapping in ...
