Hurricane Felicia was ho hum for Kona, Hurricane Guillermo even moreso...
2009-08-20 08:31:00
We rarely have hurricane weather in Kona when hurricanes pass the Big Island. We managed to get some weird winds and one evening with 3 inches of rain when it passed to the north, but looking at the weather radar it didn't seem to be directly from the storm. Anyways, other than having to tuck around corners to stay out of the wind it didn't affect the diving as far as viz and such. We've still been quite busy. On the 13th I was looking at the calendar and thinking the next day would be one of the last charters for the month, then the phone started to ring and I'm looking at maybe 2-3 days off the rest of the month if I get no more phone calls... I'm hoping for calls to fill in empty spots, got an office to fill up.I haven't been working in the "office" much lately, I had two days off a week ago that I thought I'd be able to get in, but spent it sleeping off a heavy cold. I'm cutting up palmwood trim to cover that white stripe in the middle of the walls from a picture a fe...
Ten Social Media Methods To Fight Hurricane Season
2009-08-19 18:13:00
Katrina's devastation on New Orleans was BSM (before social media). It's hard to think that we lived during a period of time without social networking, but only 4 years ago Facebook was barely one year old, and Twitter was yet to be inked out on a restaurant napkin.
Hurricane Felicia's coming... sort of...
2009-08-08 00:02:00
We've got our first hurricane "threat" of the season going on right now. Hurricane Felicia made it to a category 4 hurricane a day or two back, was down to a category 2 by last night or this morning and will likely be a good sized rain cloud by the time it reaches Hawaii. I think they're predicting it to be a tropical depression. Sounds like larger surf on the east side of the island is likely on Sunday. We'll see if anything comes of it on our side of the island when it passes. In years past that I've lived here, "hurricane days" have been gorgeous and good days for diving.I've got a couple days off after tonight's dive, and I don't expect a whole lot of phone calls 'til this thing passes. I may go shorediving Monday morning to take some pictures if the water's flat. I'm running low on unposted photos, haven't carried the camera on dives in some time, so a day on my own might be fun. Here's something you don't see a whole lot of in Hawaii... the photo above is of ...

Hurricane watch
2009-06-09 14:00:00
With the 2009 hurricane season officially beginning this past week,  Sean Broderick offers four stock picks — two bullish, two bearish — to play this summer's potentially "wild weather."In his Uncommon Wisdom advisory he offers one pair of picks that he believes will do well should the hurricane season turn out to be mild and a second pair of stocks that would see rising profits in the event that damaging storms hit in "Hurricane Alley.""Last year's stormy weather spawned 16 named storms, which was higher than the long-term average of about 10 tropical storms and six hurricanes per year in a typical Atlantic hurricane season."The major hurricane forecasters have now made their predictions, and it's for a 'moderate' hurricane season. Cooler seas off the coast of Africa and a prediction of a weak El Nino get the credit for the calmer forecast."That's good news for America's oil and gas ...
Hurricane Rescue Vehicle for New Orleans?

Hi, A little while ago, I put a suggestion for a new type of vehicle on Ky's invention thread. (Here please read) Now I just finished watching yet another show on Hurricane Katrina, and the flooding of the Mississippi in 1925, and I was struck with the idea that this vehicle could be
How To Cope, The Next Time You Are Caught In Verbal Hurricane
2009-02-18 03:39:00
Arguments, are inevitable in life. There are times, when people don?t agree with what YOU want; what you do; what you say. In most situations, you can probably resolve the disagreement in an amicable manner. Other times, it brings out the worst in people. Here are some tips to help you cope, the next time you are in a heated discussion.1. Don?t let those words escapeDuring a verbal hurricane, your temperament usually boils over. You will have offensive things bubbling up in your throat, threatening to burst out of your mouth! If you go ahead and say it anyway, you might regret it when you have calmed down. Or maybe, you agonize what you could have said. You might be able to apologize once the whole thing blows over, but you can't take your words back. 2. Ask yourself, ?Is this really something worth arguing about?By all means, I am not asking you to be a headless chicken! Sometimes, our ego gets in the way and somehow we NEED to prove that we are right! Arguments can stem from the p...

Hurricane Neoliberal Wrecks Iceland
2008-10-12 08:21:00
Updated October 12:Iceland is about to go bankrupt. Moral to the story: the more a nation swallowed the neoliberal poison, the more fucked the are. The more sensible and socialist they were, the safer they are.As I said before, if anything comes out of this world economic collapse we are presently experiencing, it is that neoliberalism should be buried for once and forever with a stake through its heart. That's not going to happen, but it should.Since 1980, the entire world has been aswoon with something called neoliberalism. Started by Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago, it quickly become championed by both US political parties, almost the entire US corporate media - newspapers, magazines, TV and radio - and almost every single economics department at every US university. An entire generation of economists was graduated with a sole idea in his head.Neoliberalism was tried for decades in Latin America. Or, actually, it was forced down their throats at gunpoint. It failed ...
Who Should Pay for Hurricane Damages?

Hurricane Ike Deaths Coverup?
2008-09-25 01:42:00
I just received the following email from someone. I'm aware of Hurricane Ike death toll coverup allegations floating around the Net, but they are mostly on crazy conspiracy sites right now, but hey, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Nevertheless, something strange does seem to be going on right now.Let me say right now that I would put virtually nothing beyond this diabolical Administration, the utterly depraved and wicked political party, and the Stepford Wives followers. Seriously, Bush could do just about anything (and he pretty much has) and the dittoheads just jump right in line and defend it or ignore it.Same thing they were bashing Dems for the other day? No problems. Same things they are bashing Dems for at the moment? No problems either. Just deny and project, the Freudian two-step. Call them on their contradictory mental nonsense? Deny, project, get angry, end conversation, divert to something irrelevant and begin logical fallacies [insert].I don't know who is s...

Are ready with 1 million ready to eat meals for those impacted by Ike.Have 2, 000 disaster relief workers on the ground. 1,400 more on their way to help those affected by Ike.Here in Mississippi on Thursday Morning the Gulf of Mexico rose up about a block from where it normally gently laps the shore. Roads, bridges and homes were flooded. During high tide it was impossible to get in or out of my neighborhood. This flooding continued through Friday until Ike made landfall in Texas several hundred miles away. We did not get any rain that I know of the flooding was the entire Gulf of Mexico being pushed inland. The storm was so big it lifted the Gulf up and pushed that enormous body of water about a block inland. It was unbelievable to see.It has been m...

So Much Fab Fashion To Cover! And Hurricane Ike.
2008-09-12 18:54:00
Well today (September 12th) marks the final day of the Spring 2009 shows at NY Fashion Week and not a single show has been covered on Hip Candy yet! Incroyable! That's "incredible" in French if you didn't know already... ok, nevermind, that was a lame attempt at being chic. Anyhoo, my weekend plans are to peruse all the glorious shows of some of my fave designers (like Christian Siriano, that's hisfabulous yellow gown above..) post up fabulous pics and then try to determine any emerging trends from the Spring 2009 season. But like I said, that's the plan. For those of you who don't know, I live in Louisiana, we just came off of a devastating hurricane, "Gustav", and now there's another one in the Gulf, "Ike" so Gulf States are all on watch this weekend even if we're not in the storms direct path. They're saying that Hurricane Ike has a ridiculous 900 mile spread which means we'll probably feel some effects of any outer bands from this storm. I'm such a meteorologis...

Christians in Texas Command Hurricane Ike to Stop
2008-09-12 02:41:00
A group of Christians from Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas, has decided to call upon the Almighty to stop the advancement of Hurricane Ike into Houston.  By beseeching the assistance of Jesus, the alleged son of God, they have "power and authority to affect the weather," says one churchgoer upon questioning. When asked how it came to be known that they possessed this extraordinary ability, the answer was simple: faith. While it may seem absurd to claim any knowledge of this power since it has not been borne out by evidence of any kind, faith is all the evidence these believers need. Rev. Caldwell, pastor of the church, says, "It is definitely by faith that we know that we have an impact." Their church recently held a prayer meeting in order to officially command Ike to cease and desist its approach into the Houston area. Some participants claimed to have calmed Edouard and sent hurricane Gustav into southern Lou...

Hurricane Gustav: Twitter "Tweets" of New Orleans Residents Show They're Le
2008-08-31 20:54:00
I just happened to check out the Twitter "tweets" -- messages -- left by New Orleans residents, or at least those who listed as living in that city which seems to be the target of yet another Hurricane, this one called Gustof.  How I did it was by simply typing "New Orleans" in a search on Twitter. Some of the messages are from people who have already departed, like aliciammyers, who reports that she's "Driving towards Nashville. Want eggs so badly. Traffic is non-".  Then sarahmparks writes that she's "keeping an eye on Gustav".   Emmaleigh3 reports that she's "Watching pirates of the carribean and waiting for the storm".   She'd better get out of there!! Twitter's a good way to determine the mood and place of people in a region during a disaster like Gustav.  I'm going to follow the New Orleans people via Twitter in the days to come.

Hurricane Gustav: BE SAFE.
2008-08-31 20:31:00
Hurricane Gustav is headed for landfall in Louisiana and neighboring states in the next 24 hours, with currently around an equal chance of being a category 3 storm or a category 4 storm. Gustav has 150 mph winds at the moment as it begins to enter the gulf of Mexico and a million people evacuate. After failing in their response to Hurricane Katrina three years ago, FEMA is trying to be more proactive.Hopefully anyone reading this on this blog right now is completely out of harms way and somewhere safe away from the Louisiana, Mississippi Gulf Coast. Hopefully this thing turns out to be nothing more than a slight breeze with a little rain. But in any case, everyone from the potentially affected regions.. be safe.Chanel

Location : US Gulf CoastFrom where I'm sitting, this is one uncomfortable picture.  The above satellite imagery shows the whole of the US gulf and Atlantic area. The One on tip of Cuba is Gustav and more to the east is Hanna. Hanna is projected to die down a bit to "Tropical Storm" status over the next few days, but Gustav is slated to hit the Louisiana coast on the 1st PM or 2nd PM. Which should make my life uncomfortable sometime late on the 30th.

Hurricane Fay - Hype or Hurricane?
2008-08-19 11:35:00
Hurricane season is in full swing - or is it? Florida may be our favorite state to hang out and swim with the dolphins - but maybe not during hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center in Miami is buzzing with activity as tourists and residents try to figure out what Hurricane Fay (the 6th storm this season) will do as she works her way further up the coast. But even though she's been given her own name, she's not technically a "real" hurricane yet. read more
