While Hybrids can save you a substantial amount of money over the life of the vehicle, they do come with a few drawbacks. They are often small and have a limited range while running on full electric power, but does running almost completely silent present itself as a downside? According to many people it does and Lotus Engineering has designed a system to help reduce the worries associated with running silently. Break even time on hybrid vehicles drastically dropping with rising gas prices When automakers first began offering hybrid models at the turn of the century, it was hard to validate the car's higher purchase price — when compared to gasoline-only counterparts — against the relatively low cost of gas. However, as gas prices continue to rise, the case for purchasing a hybrid vehicle is becoming stronger. With national gas prices hovering around $3.70, the time it takes for a hybrid to pay for itself has been drastically reduced. Just a few years ago, the higher sticker price of a hybrid took five or more years to be offset by fuel savings. But with gas prices at record highs, some hybrid will pay for themselves in just two or three years, according to USA Today. Based on driving 15,000 miles a year, Edmunds figure that the $889 premium the hybrid Toyota Camry commands over a comparably equipped gasoline Camry will only take 1.7 years to be offset by fuel savin...

You may be surprised to find out that the United States consumes a quarter of the world's oil supply but only carries three percent of the world's oil reserves on its own territory. As a result, America is forced to import over 60% of the oil our country needs, relying more and more on foreign countries, particularly in the Middle East, to support our oil dependency. Many experts are under the impression that the introduction and popularity of hybrid vehicles in the US will lessen our dependency on overseas oil. Powered jointly by gasoline and electric engines, hybrids use much less gasoline than conventional vehicles and therefore use less oil. Over 11 million barrels of oil are imported into the US each day and although most of it is contributed to industry, the running of vehicles still uses quite a bit of oil and hybrids provide a way to limit that amount.Because the market reacted so well towards the introduction of hybrid vehicles, it is predicted that more Americans will buy...

Searches for hybrid vehicles on the Cars.com Web site are at an all-time high. In fact, a recent Cars.com survey showed that 59 percent of car shoppers have purchased or would consider purchasing a hybrid as their next car.So which cities are greener when it comes to car shopping? According to the group's ranking of hybrid vehicle searches by market, West Coast shoppers show the greatest interest in going green. San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Sacramento and San Diego make up the top five.In each of these markets, hybrids account for more than 3 percent of new car searches. Cities in the south -- Houston, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Birmingham, and Miami -- round out the bottom five."Gas prices definitely play a role in hybrid interest, because West Coast cities traditionally have higher gas prices on average than the rest of the country," said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com editor in chief."The Cars.com Green Index also shows that interest is high in markets that are traditionally concerne...
Duke Energy, Coca-Cola tesing plug-in hybrid vehicles
2008-03-16 02:08:00
The Wolfpack Power Pack drinks Coke.We recently told you about North Carolina's Duke Energy's new research center for plug-in hybrids. Yesterday, Duke Energy announced that the energy company and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated (based in Charlotte) will be working together on research for plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) technology. The partnership won't just be to test vehicles - both companies will convert some hybrids currently in their fleets to PHEVs (Coke will convert three Priuses) - but also to educate the public on what a plug-in hybrid is all about. This isn't Coke's first foray into greener vehicles. Just a few weeks ago, Eaton announced that Coke had ordered 120 hybrid trucks. Now, if they can find a way to replace all the HFCS with sugar - the old fashioned style - in American Coke, I might drink the stuff more often. Pedestrians and Dangers from Hybrid Vehicles
2008-01-12 15:58:00
The other day, I put a scare into both myself and a driver when I almost stepped out in front of her hybrid car. She was shaken up and looked stunned that an adult would be so careless. I was just embarrassed. But as I told a friend about it the next day, I found that it?s more common than I thought. He had done the same thing a few weeks earlier. Then, someone else told me about a woman who was putting groceries in the trunk of her car and didn?t even realize that a hybrid vehicle nearly backed into her! Hybrid cars are so popular that auto manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up with the demand. The ones already on the market include Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Toyota Highlander, Lexus, Honda Civic, Honda Accord and the Ford Escape. They use both gas and batteries to operate. At higher speeds, they run on gasoline just like any other car. However, at lower speeds (such as less than 20 mph), hybrids are powered by batteries. At the slower speeds, these battery-powered cars ...

While there is certainly a large number of GOPers who don't want to give the idea of climate change the time of day, the national security wing of the Party is most likely very much in favor of reducing the amount of oil imports. Therefore, it makes some sense that when GM was named to be the "Official Vehicle Provider to 2008 Republican National Convention," they chose to make the 300-vehicle fleet "primarily" of flexible-fuel and hybrid models.GM has worked with the Republicans for the last seven GOP conventions, and this year GOP convention President and Chief Executive Officer Maria Cino said in a statement (available after the jump) that the partnership will be part of "the greenest convention in our Party's history." Since the convention will be held in Minnesota, my guess is that the E85-capable vehicles will actually have ethanol in them. Still, it'd be nice if someone can check for us when the convention happens in September. Anyone want to volunteer? On an OT side note, ...
How Do Hybrid Vehicles Work?
2007-12-12 11:35:00
It is easy to save fuel with two motors Why are hybrid vehicles so fuel efficient? This all is very simple – these cars just burn gasoline when it is necessary. Judging by the term itself we can see that the car under its hood combines two engine types – a standard gasoline powerplant and a powerful electric engine. The electric engine is provided with rechargeable batteries. It is the main power which moves the car during driving with slow speed, for instance, in stop-and-go city traffic. When a motorist taps on the brakes lightly, for instance during slow down phases and coasting, the wheels of the car are automatically engaged to electrical generator. To slow the car down the extra load id made by this generator. It also serves to convert the mechanical energy of the car into electricity back thus recharging the batteries. When the car is driving with the higher speed, during steady road cruising, for example, the gas-burning engine is automatica...
Think Hybrid vehicles are cool?
2007-11-30 01:11:00
Think Hybrid vehicles are cool? Well, in a sense they are, but they still burn the good old fossil fuels, so they still rely on the age old internal combustion engine, and, when you get down to the economics of it, the initial cash you put out over a standard car of the same model, and you're making more of a fashion statement than anything else. But they still get good gas mileage. What about Full Electric cars? General Motors had such a vehicle for lease in the 1990s but has since pulled the plug on them and sent them to the scrap heap, even though many who leased the vehicles offered to buy them. They were that good. Companies are searching for the next best thing, with biofuels, fuel cells, and electric vehicles getting all kinds of press. What about a hybrid vehicle in the sense that it is not a four wheel car, but a three wheel, that can carry two people and still have room for several surfboards and beach chairs? Images courtesy Aptera Aptera may have the concept for you. C...

Googlediving, hybrid vehicles, and energy consumption
2007-11-28 03:56:00
A recent thread of discussion (namely, some comments on the hybrid cars podcast episode) brings me to remind you of the wisdom of cross-checking ostensibly "scientific" things you hear in conversation, or see mentioned in print or online somewhere. Fortunately, it's pretty easy these days to check things using the internet. When I run across something that seems to be questionable, I've gotten into the habit of doing a quick bit of checking things out with Google. I call this "googlediving" -- it's essentially the information equivalent of dumpster diving but doesn't leave you all smelly when you're done. Best of all, it usually takes just a few minutes to run a quick check. Let's look at the recent discussion as a good example....
Beware of Hybrid Vehicles in Parking Lots
2007-10-30 14:54:00
Today’s tip is a safety tip cautioning readers to be aware of the "dangers" of hybrid and electric vehicles to pedestrians. Last week, my children and I were almost hit by a Prius in a health food store parking lot. I can imagine the headline: "Environmentalist run over by a hybrid vehicle." Ironic, eh? My near-encounter with the Prius occurred because the car was running on its electric motor, thus making the car virtually silent. As the Prius backed out of its parking space, I was caught by surprise and realized how much I rely on my ears to warn me of traffic. We tell children to "look both ways and listen" for cars when crossing streets, but as our fleet moves toward hybrid vehicles (and hopefully electric ones, too), we will need to adjust which senses we rely on to keep us safe in parking lots and crossing roads. I am not the only one to be startled by a low noise car. In particular, hybrid vehicles running on their electric motors especially affect blind people, who rely ...

How do Hybrid Vehicles Get Such Great Gas Mileage?
2007-10-02 23:02:00
It?s not by accident that many of the most fuel efficient vehicles for the 2005 model year were hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), also known as hybrid vehicles, or simply hybrids. Hybrid vehicles are built in a variety of configurations to achieve different objectives. They combine an electric motor with the best features of the internal combustion engine and are capable of significant improvements of fuel economy without giving up performance or driving range. Some hybrids are also configured to supply power for power tools or other electrical devices.Hybrid vehicles are powered primarily by an internal combustion engine, just like conventional vehicles. However, they also convert energy normally wasted during braking and coasting into electricity. This energy is stored in a battery until it is needed by the electric motor. Internal combustion engines are least efficient in low-speed driving conditions, and when hill climbing or accelerating. This is where the electric motor k...
Basic Technology of Hybrid Vehicles Explained
2007-10-02 21:53:00
Petroleum-based fuels are ideally suited for internal combustion engine technology, which has powered most cars and trucks for over a century. Burning fossil fuels for over a hundred years however has done some serious damage to the ecology of the planet. Enter the electric vehicle with lower emissions, but correspondingly lower power. Finally, both technologies have come together in hybrid vehicles, also known as hybrid electric vehicles or HEVs.Present-day hybrid vehicles are equipped with both gas internal combustion engines and electric motors. The gas engine produces power through small and continuous controlled explosions that push pistons which turn a rotating crankshaft. The force created by the rotation crankshaft is transmitted through a number of components and ultimately turns the vehicle's wheels. The electric motor is powered by a battery which creates energy through a chemical reaction. The battery is continually recharged by a generator that is powered by the...

Toyota To Make Flex-Fuel Capable Hybrid Vehicles
2007-03-16 06:13:00
I am talking about Toyota, what else? You have a quick I.Q. that is right. I am referring to its world?s most famous hybrid maker - Toyota - which is said to have been able to create a vehicle that can run on a pure ethanol fuel. The Japanese automaker is currently doing a study about the so called fuel-flex hybrid which is making a big sound on the US car market. Jim Press, the Japanese automaker's North American president, mentioned this today in Washington. Press also added, ?A hybrid that uses ethanol is a pretty good solution.? He also did add that hybrid vehicles are ?the kinds of things we need to consider?. This he stated when he was interviewed after he testified in Congress on fuel-economy standards. Both Toyota and Honda are the only large makers of hybrid vehicles which are destined for the US car market. They are also those companies who do not make cars that run on E85, 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Which is why Toyota decides to venture in a fuel-flex hybrid which they...
