Sugar Doesn?t Make Kids Hyper!
2009-06-09 07:02:00
I may not be a parent, but I do have ears. Over the years, I've heard that giving your children too much sugar makes them hyperactive. I've heard this ever since I was a kid myself during the 1970s, when sugar cereals began to get a bad rap. Later, when I worked for the phone company, I would o

That is the question our government would be asking you if they were your waiter.  While I was doing this morning’s mortgage market update, that thought came to mind as a great way to sarcastically explain the government’s actions thus far. With job losses mounting, the government claims they need to force through another stimulus package which creates more jobs, government jobs that is.  And they did exactly that, well not exactly as the amount of jobs they actually will create versus what they claim will not equal each other, and it will be inversely proportional to how much the cost is.  In simpler terms, they won’t create the promised amount of jobs and it will ultimately cost more than what they said.  Also, history shows that growing the government is exactly opposite of what the government should be doing, at least in a capitalistic society.  maybe the dessert selection will be socialism? I don’t think there are many out there ...
Does Sugar Really Make Kids Hyper?
2008-12-19 05:00:00
A new report by Indiana University medical professor Dr. Aaron Carroll reveals a few interesting facts about commonly heard beliefs. Take the conventional wisdom about kids and sugar-that it makes them go wild for a couple hours. The report found no connection between sugar and hyperactivity, and 12 highly scientific studies back that up. One of those ...

Aden sisters: Hyper-inflation or deflation?

“There’s no question these are dangerous times and the financial world is in uncharted waters,” caution resource experts Mary Anne and Pamela Aden ( The Aden Forecast (, the sisters offer an exceptional in-depth discussion on inflationary vs. deflationary foreces, their outlook for precious metals, and their top gold and silver positions for long-term investors.“The global financial system is on very thin ice, teetering on collapse. Global central banks clearly are literally pulling out all the stops to revive lending and the world economy.“Will these efforts work? Will they be enough? Those are the most important unanswered questions of the day and only time will tell, but we should know much more in the critical month or so ahead. Why?“The Fed is spending money at an astronomical rate. It’s creating this money out of thin a...

Behavior Modification VS Medicating Hyper Children
2008-08-12 14:55:00
Today is Lily' s fifth day of Kindergarten. She is doing great at school. The first few days she wasn't really able to settle down enough to communicate with me. Now she is back to her old self. I wonder if kids with ADD or ADHD are always like that? I mean for days Lily couldn't settle down enough to listen or talk, I knew she was in there but I couldn't get a connection. Some of the things I did which seem to have helped Lily settle down: I put us on a schedule. I used only a soft patient voice, even though she was driving me crazy and I wanted with every fiber of my being to scream, "knock it off". I gave her a physical outlet for her extra energy, like going for a walk or wrestling with me. I also get her up for school about an hour before we need to leave for the bus, that gives her enough time in the morning for a lea surly breakfast and time to goof off and not be in a rush. Finally she started to come out of that hyper place and was our Lily again. I hope the sam...

MSDN and TechNet Powered by Hyper-V
2008-05-21 21:26:00
For the last several months we have had the opportunity to focus on virtualizing both the MSDN and TechNet websites with Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V as a start to our overall virtualization adoption strategy. This was a group effort across our entire Operations Team including individuals from the Technical Architecture group I am part of, the System Engineers who run the sites, the data center hosting team which handles our infrastructure changes and the very supportive product group which is responsible for MSDN and TechNet. Today we are very pleased to be able to share how Hyper-V was deployed for those two sites and our lessons learned through that process.  We have written an article on the TechCenter which goes through how we approached virtualizing MSDN and TechNet and hopefully conveys how successful we found Hyper-V to be as a web platform. The article covers the reasons and characteristics which made MSDN the first site we looked to move onto Hyper-V.   It provides an over...

Virtual Machine Snapshots with Hyper-V
2008-04-27 23:20:00
Snapshots are a new feature of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Snapshots are a point in time version of a virtual machine?..what does that mean you ask? It means that you can be running a virtual machine, take a snapshot and at any point you can select a previous snapshot and revert back to that point in time.  You end up with the virtual machine in the EXACT configuration that it was when you took the snapshot?and I mean exact?.memory, virtual hardware, processes, state, etc. So you can have a running virtual machine, take a snapshot, change the virtual hardware configuration, format the disk and install a different OS, it does not matter, when you apply the previous snapshot it looks exactly like it did when you took the snapshot. Snapshots do not affect the running state of the virtual machine, meaning that taking a snapshot does not change the virtual machine hardware, applications, or the currently running processes. It also means that deleting a snapshot does not change the virt...

2008-04-20 20:03:00
As we have moved from Beta to RC the number of questions I have been getting around Hyper-V performance have grown quite a bit. It?s time to put some tips out on how to avoid some common pitfalls. Pitfall 1: The first and most common has been running without Integration Components ( )  This is understandable because they are new with Hyper-V and figuring out if they are running is not simple unless you know a few tricks. The IC?s are important because they can improve overall workload performance from 10?s of percent to more commonly 100?s of percent. This is why they are so important. Resolution: Make sure IC?s are installed. I have two tips on how to do this. The first is to connect your VHD?s / Drives to the Virtual Machine using the virtual SCSI controller. What?s nice about this is if your drive shows up is Disk Manager (run diskmgmt.msc) you know you are using IC?s. The virtu...

Hyper-V Installation Tricks - Part 3: Integrated Installation and The Beaut
2008-03-28 01:18:00
Thus far we covered the steps necessary to capture a system image with Hyper-V installed, and how to install Windows and Hyper-V at the same time without dealing with system images at all. Let's take a step back and talk about system images again.  Images are a great way to deploy a customized version of Windows to many different workstations or servers without having to go through the effort of configuring each system independently of each other. Even if you're just setting Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 up from a DVD, you're still using an image to do the installation.  If you look on the DVD in the sources folder, you'll find a file called install.wim.  WIM stands for Windows IMage, and it's an actual image of a real Windows installation that Setup applies directly to your hard drive (and then manipulates a bit, but that's a different story). You can also make your own WIM files using the imagex.exe tool that ships with the Windows AIK, which I'll li...
Facebook's goes hyper-viral with 'People You May Know'
2008-03-27 22:09:00
Facebook has about 67 million members. With the new "People You May Know" feature, the number of connections per member will skyrocket, extending the reach and stickiness of Facebook's social graph. People You May Know finds people within six degrees or so of separation and suggests them as potential friends. It appears that the threshold is set at four, meaning you are connected to four of the same people as the suggested "friend." FriendFeed has taken a somewhat similar approach for recommending new people to "follow." This type of recommendation engine, which taps into the social graph, is like a Las Vegas slot machine that keeps on giving. Every time you pull the lever you get a bunch of new friend connections, which makes you want to keep pulling the lever until it runs out of recommendations. The end result is that Facebook generates some exponential growth, creating more density in its web of people connections. And, Facebook members now have an ea...
Hyper-V Installation Tricks - Part 2: Unattended Installation of Windows an
2008-03-26 07:33:00
Picture it:  Sicily, 1914.  You've got a bunch of Servers that you need to install and configure Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V RC0 on.  You don't feel like messing around with Sysprep.  What do you do? Well, since none of these things existed in 1914, you're probably pretty safe, but that doesn't really help anyone right now, does it? What you need, is a way to do an unattended installation of Windows and Hyper-V so you don't have to sit there the whole time and type commands when the system is ready for you.  Lucky for you, we've already thought of that.  Before you begin, I strongly recommend that you download the Windows AIK for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1.  The AIK contains tools and documentation specifically for helping administrators just like you to roll-out Windows on a large scale.  With the AIK, you'll get a nifty little tool that will help you build unattended installation files (formerly called sysprep.inf,...
Hyper-V Installation Tricks - Part 1: Sysprep and Hyper-V
2008-03-26 07:31:00
Before we jump right into this, I thought it would be best if we got a few things straight.  For the remainder of this post, everytime I say "sysprep," I'm referring to running Sysprep with the /generalize switch.  This is the best way to make sure that the Windows installation image that you capture and apply to other systems actually works when you put it on those other systems. For more details on what Sysprep with and without the /generalize switch does, I encourage you to read the documentation, which I have conveniently provided a hyperlink to. So, you're planning to sysprep a Windows Server 2008 box with Hyper-V installed?  Good choice.  I'm sure you'll be happy with the result, but there are few things that you'll have to do to make sure Hyper-V functions properly after you apply the image to a different computer.  A KB article that describes all of these things is in the works, but I thought I'd get this out in the open as soon as ...
Hyper-V Installation Tricks - Prologue
2008-03-26 07:28:00
As you may have heard, we've shipped Hyper-V RC0.  Sorry for the lack of posts - it seems like I'm always on vacation when we ship a major release like this, so my posts lag a few days behind. Installing Hyper-V isn't exactly a difficult task, but if you have to do it on multiple machines, installing Windows, installing Hyper-V and then applying the RC0 patch can be a bit time consuming.   The purpose of this series of posts is to offer a few different ways to help you speed up your Hyper-V deployments. Here are the major topics I'm planning to post about: Sysprep and Hyper-V Unattended Installation of Windows and Hyper-V RC0 Integrated Installation - The Beauty of the Win6 servicing stack If you've got any other suggestions for topics, please let me know.

The Hyper Efficient Acabion GTBO

What color is your Rocket? The good folks over at Acabion have developed a two wheeled (with tip over wheels) fully enclosed and hyper efficient speed machine that's not for the faint of heart, or pocket book!    Prices start at 1.83 Million Euros. This is the GTBO and it's a performance engineers dream machine with: "750 hp and 700 lbs vehicle weight result in more than 2100 hp per ton.   They boost the jet-like GTBO to jet-fighter punch and to new dimensions of both efficiency and speed.   v max is 340 mph at half throttle, governor limited. 0 to 300 mph in less than 30 sec.   Economic theories tell us, that you can not maximize effect and minimize effort at the same time. The Acabion GTBO proves the opposite.   It minimizes weight and maximizes power and aerodynamic efficiency.   The effects are just out of this world. 100 mph at 1.7% throttle and 100 miles per gallon. 150 mph at 4.3% throttle and...
