China FDI In Iceland. Soft Power Done Hardly Well At All.
2011-10-21 09:58:00
The following is a guest post from one of our readers in Iceland, Neil Holdsworth. Neil has been updating me via email regarding a Chinese investor who is seeking to purchase a massive amount of land in Iceland and the controversies that have been attendant to that. When he asked me why I don't write a post about it, I asked him the same question and the below is the result.  As has been reported extensively elsewhere, China has taken an interest in Iceland as a potential location for a deep sea port on arctic shipping routes and as a future source of fresh water. Though China has not shown signs of embarking on an Africa-style resource grab in Iceland, it obviously has a long term strategic interest in the country. It is proposing to develop what will be by far the biggest embassy in Reykjavik, raising eyebrows among the country's 320,000 inhabitants. Despite Iceland's being part of the European Economic Area, investment opportunities for outsiders here are limited. Illinois is viewed as same credit risk as Iceland
2010-12-16 04:21:00
In the last two years, Iceland has seen massive unemployment, it's currency collapsed, major banks failed and taken over by the government, riots, and resignation by many top politicians. In other words, the financial and social outlook in Iceland is gloomy.Well, how are we over here in Illinois? According to Zero Hedge, Illinois is perceived as a higher risk of default as Iceland. Zero Hedge tracks countries and ranks them by chance of default....

Photo Friday: The Beauty of Iceland
2009-12-04 19:00:00
Iceland is easily one of the most beautiful countries I've even been to. What makes this such a stunning place to visit? Well....there are the ever-present (in late Spring, anyways) rainbows that arc over moss-covered former lava fields,   there's the city of Reykjavik, with its brightly-colored houses against the backdrop of the bay and the mountains,   plummeting waterfalls everywhere you look,   and of course, the famous, eerily bright, Blue Lagoon....

First Iceland, and then the U.S.?
2009-01-26 16:05:00
The government of Iceland fell. Went kerplop. Disintegrated into so much slush and rubble. Melted away. Died.Three months ago, Iceland's currency, the krona, collapsed, along with some of their major banks and their stock market. (Hey--that last part sounds familiar.) Some of its banks were then nationalized, and the country limped along. Then, thousands of protesters assembled, demanding that Prime Minister Geir Haarde resign (which he refused to do, but he did announce he would not run for re-election due to health issues). But then, his Commerce Minister resigned, slamming on the brakes of the administration's giant snowmobile.Meanwhile, the IMF promised $827 million to pump into the frozen Icelandic economy right away, after inflation had reached 12 percent. Then, $1.2 billion more is expected in installments from the IMF, as well as the burgeoning snowball of aid from its neighbors, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, contributing another $2.5 billion.Still scrambling for m...

Hurricane Neoliberal Wrecks Iceland
2008-10-12 08:21:00
Updated October 12:Iceland is about to go bankrupt. Moral to the story: the more a nation swallowed the neoliberal poison, the more fucked the are. The more sensible and socialist they were, the safer they are.As I said before, if anything comes out of this world economic collapse we are presently experiencing, it is that neoliberalism should be buried for once and forever with a stake through its heart. That's not going to happen, but it should.Since 1980, the entire world has been aswoon with something called neoliberalism. Started by Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago, it quickly become championed by both US political parties, almost the entire US corporate media - newspapers, magazines, TV and radio - and almost every single economics department at every US university. An entire generation of economists was graduated with a sole idea in his head.Neoliberalism was tried for decades in Latin America. Or, actually, it was forced down their throats at gunpoint. It failed ...

World's Healthiest Countries (Forbes): Iceland, Sweden and Finland.

According to Forbes’ website, northern Europe is home to some of the world's healthiest countries, including top-ranking Iceland, Sweden and Finland. Clean air, low rates of illness and access to food are important factors that contribute to make these the world's 15 best places to live.Read more"Historically, these countries had an ethic of having more of a nationalized health care system,""There's this mentality that health care should be a given right for citizens.""Everyone, needs to be aware that how we provide health care to people in a country is a critical issue." said Kate Schecter, a program officer for the American International Health Alliance.“Countries' success in combating pollution is likely due to a mix of policies addressing the problem, enforcement of standards and the use of clean fuel”“But some places, such as those located along coastlines, are simply luckier than others, since crosswinds can dilute air pollution”said Kiran Pandey, a senior envir...

Eurovision 2008: Iceland to win
2008-03-23 14:38:00
So all 43 of this year's Eurovision Song Contest entrants have been selected and it looks to be a poor year for song quality with the exception of a few outstanding gems.My money is on Iceland winning Eurovision 2008 with the upbeat club track 'This is my life' performed by Euroband. The song stands head and shoulders above all the other entrants especially as Sweden failed to select Bodies Without Organs (BWO) to represent them, which would have been Iceland's nearest rival. It is by far the strongest song this year and judging by the video, the performance from Fririk mar and Regina sk is slick and polished. It would be the first win for Iceland so fingers-crossed.Another song that stands out is the entry from Ukraine, Ani Lorak singing Shady Lady (Ukraine seems to garner the political vote these days). Also, Israel's Boaz Mauda singing 'The Fire In Your Eyes' will do well.A welcome return to the contest for Dima Bilan who represented Russia in 2006 and came 3rd. In 2008...
