2009-05-06 00:24:00 Chika and her friends are back and even sillier things than ever before are happening in Ichigo Mashimaro Encore. Much of what is animated in Encore is from the 6th volume of the manga. If you have read and enjoyed these chapters, you are likely to enjoy them again as animation.If you don't care that Miu's antics can make demons in hell laugh, then you probably won't care so much. And if you don't care that Nobue is not their friend, but their gang boss, or that Miu and Chika's friendship is almost alien in it's intense weirdness, then, again, you probably don't want to watch this anime.But if you are a member of the Miu Fan Club, if you like the idea that Miu and Chika's relationship surpasses words and has moved on to bizarre ASCII art, if you like the idea that Chika and Miu make a stellar comedy team then you too, will enjoy Encore.Yuri is low, with one "are we lesbians" gag but despite that, yes, I still think the Miu is a EPL-in training. Ichigo Mashimaro Manga, Volume 6
2009-04-25 02:03:00 Once more it is my genuine pleasure to welcome Sean Gaffney back as Guest Reviewer!The sixth volume of Ichigo Mashimaro is finally out in Japan (it's been running since 2001, but is only up to Volume 6 due to the author's frequent breaks and the sometimes short chapters). There's no earth-shattering changes, except that if anything Nobue gets even less to do. As Chika has gotten more tsundere and taken over much of the beatings of Miu, Nobue has sadly faded into the background a bit.In any case, we get 10 new chapters here, interspersed with 'a day in the life' interstitials. My favorites of the interstitials are a) Miu responding to her teacher's request to solve a difficult fraction problem by getting out her giant protractor, and b) Miu's amusing giant geek glasses she wears during chemistry, complete with spiral effect.The girls battle a cockroach, have fun drawing on each other's faces (in 2 separate chapters, one with a 'third eye' and the other with Japanese charact...

2007-09-03 21:19:00 See, here's the thing. We all know that, in Ichigo Mashimaro. Miu has a crush on Nobue. It's also obvious that it'll never happen. (And not just 'cause Nobue is more interested in Ana and Matsuri. It just isn't ever going to happen. Nobue and Miu are way too similar to work as a couple, even if everything else managed to work out.)But recently, I have become convinced that - should everything else work out - Miu and Chika might, possibly work as a couple. But that really has nothing at all to do with Ichigo Mashmaro OVA 3. I just thought I'd mention it.It's spring. It's an extended holiday and Chika really, really wants to go somewhere or do something special. Despite her protests, Nobue has just the thing - a free trip to a B&B in Izu. Life exploded again.In a desperate attempt to find some balm for my harried soul, I watched the third and final volume of the Strawberry Marshmallow series. For the time it lasted, it was just the thing. :-)In this volume, we continue to watch Itou Nobue, her sister Chika, Chika's sociopath friend Miu and two younger girls, Matsuri and Ana do basically nothing. But they do nothing very amusingly. They sit around watching a hypnotist, play soccer, go to a public bath and talk about Santa Claus. Amusingly.Miu is, as always, the highlight of the show. Having decided to "hypnotize" Chika, Miu says that she will turn Chika into her dog, Satake. When Chika leaves the room, Miu runs off, and returns accompanied by the pup. Matsuri, always the perfect straight man, believes that Miu has succeeded until Chika shows up in person. Yuri Manga: Ichigo Mashimaro, Volume 5 (Japanese)
2007-05-16 01:09:00 If ever there was a manga that could be called a "clip episode" volume, Ichigo Mashimaro, Volume 5, is that manga.Since the last volume was released in 2005, there have been only a very few new pages of Ichigo Mashimaro that have run in Dengeki Daioh magazine. So few that there really could not have been anything like a full volume from them. So interspersed with the 4-6 page shorts that have been running in the magazine are some "classic" chapters from past volumes.The one new chapter really worth mentioning was fairly recent. Miu, as usual, begins it all by asking what the difference between "tomodachi" (friend) and "shinyuu" (close friend) is. Miu inquires of all of them how they feel about her, asking Chika if they are shinyuu. She asks everyone how they define the words, and pins Matsuri and Ana down with an investigation when they say that they are shinyuu. She takes a look at Matsuri's phone and sees a conversation with Ana that reads something on the order of "I'm a little...

So today we have a guest review, once again, from fellow Cult of Miu member, Sean Gaffney (who is also working on an Ichigo Mashimaro fanfic for me. Feel free to harrass him into finishing it.)We've hit the third volume of Ichigo Mashimaro, and this is the volume where things really change... no, wait, it's not. Things continue on exactly as before. But that's OK, cause this is Ichigo Mashimaro, and you aren't watching for growth or change, you're watching for freaky Miu and sarcastic Nobue. Which this has in abundance.I will admit I wasn't as fond of the first story as the others, as generally when Miu is Miu I don't like it to have as much consequence as it does here.
