The Padres Series
2008-05-19 06:01:00 Over the last 13 years of my life, I have never become uninterested in the Mariners. That is, until about the last week of April, 2008. I typically would watch all 9 innings of a game. When I would go to games, I would stay until the very last pitch, including the Cleveland double-header last ...

The perennial All-Star and hit machine got his first of the spring while his Seattle Mariners tied the San Francisco Giants 3-3 in 10 innings. “We can all sleep tonight,” Mariners manager John McLaren said, chuckling. Suzuki’s 0-for-21, one short of his ...

Ichiro Suzuki Ties Record With Another 200 Hit Season
2007-09-05 00:49:00 Another Baseball Record Is Threatened As Ichiro Makes Milestone Against Yankees:Ichiro Suzuki had three hits off Clemens to equal another record, Felix Hernandez pitched seven sharp innings and the Mariners beat the New York Yankees 7-1 Monday in the opener of a crucial series. Suzuki homered in the third inning to reach 200 hits for the seventh consecutive season, tying the AL mark. He also singled twice against Clemens to raise his career average against the right-hander to .217 (5-for-23). Seattle ended its season-worst nine-game losing streak and trimmed New York's wild-card lead to one game, winning for the first time since it beat Texas 4-2 on Aug. 24. "Two-hundred hits is always special for me, no matter what the situation," Suzuki said through a translator. "But I did have the plus also today of getting a win after nine consecutive losses and getting it off of Roger Clemens." The young right-hander easily got the better of the banged-up Clemens, who also has been bother...

Money Talk$
2007-07-16 22:10:00 The last week has rendered some of the biggest and possibly most outlandish contract deals in my recent memory. I want to take just a little bit of time to address the situations and the money that went down in the last week and tell you what I think it meant and what it means for the future. We'll start in football. The Lions gave Cory Redding a seven-year, $49 million contract that included $16 million in guarantees, including $13 million in signing bonus and roster guarantees just today. Last season Cory had 48 tackles (39 solo), 8 sacks, and 2 FF. He's a great young player and I think that was a great move for the Lions to make. It's important for the team to commit some $$ to the defensive side of the ball and that they certainly did. Hopefully (for the Lions' sake) the kid continues to get better and can prove he's worth all that money - which probably means racking up more than 8 sacks next season.Let's stay in football and on the defensive side of the ball (you all know...

But the A.L. Stars Shine that Much Brighter...Again [J. Mark English]
2007-07-11 06:40:00 What is wrong with the National League? They lost again tonight to the American League, in a losing streak dating back to 1996. Here is a bit of a recap from the New York Times:On a night of tricky hops, Ichiro Suzuki and the American League also bounced back to win. Instead of a Barry Bonds splash shot, the defining hit at Tuesday's All-Star game was Suzuki's inside-the-park home run, the first in the game's history.Suzuki lined a go-ahead, two-run drive off the right-field wall in the fifth inning, Carl Crawford and Victor Martinez later hit conventional shots and the Americans made it 10 straight over Nationals, holding on for a 5-4 victory. After Alfonso Soriano's two-out, two-run homer in the ninth, the NL loaded the bases. Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez then retired Aaron Rowand on a routine fly to right for a save.Willie Mays, Bonds' godfather, was honored with a touching tribute before the game. In the Say Hey Kid's day, the NL ruled All-Star games but not anymore. ...

Ichiro Seems Likely To Stay
2007-07-10 16:48:00 Larry Stone of the Seattle Times describes how drastically the atmosphere has changed in Seattle over the last year, especially from Ichiro's point of view. Gone are the negative tree metaphors; the vibe is positive under John McLaren. Winning doesn't hurt either. Stone speculates that a contract extension could happen soon for Ichiro. He may not be a home run hitter, and he may not draw walks. But all the hits have led to a strong .379 career OBP. And he's hit enough triples and doubles to bring his career SLG to .439 despite averaging about ten home runs per year. Throw in premium center field defense and international appeal, and a four-year, $72MM extension sounds fair.

Hargrove Resignation Could Help Ms Retain Ichiro
2007-07-02 07:01:00 Today's surprising resignation by Mariners manager Mike Hargrove could have a major effect on our world. That is, the trade and signing world of MLBTR. Ken Rosenthal has a new video up at FOXSports discussing the Hargrove resignation. Rosenthal mentions the well-known fact that Ichiro did not have a great relationship with Hargrove. He speculates that the resignation could affect Ichiro's decision on whether to stay in Seattle after this season. Rosenthal adds that Ichiro likes new Mariners manager John McLaren. The bigger factor, though, has likely always been Ichiro's desire to play for a winning team. The Mariners, at a surprising 45-33, are just one game out of the Wild Card (trailing the Tigers). It's starting to look like there's a good chance the Mariners retain Ichiro. Which player would be shifted to right field, Ichiro or superprospect Adam Jones? By the way, if the season ended today, the playoff matchups would b...

Ichiro Suzuki (OF-SEA)
2007-06-02 23:53:00 Suzuki now has a 25-game hitting streak, a Mariners record. Most impressive has been his .383 batting average and 13 stolen bases over the past four weeks. Ichiro has once again established his elite status in fantasy leagues and should be starting in every format.
