Speediest GIDP Leaders of 2008
2008-11-03 15:13:00 Speediest GIDP Leaders of 2008 Grouding into a double play is inferiating when watching your favorite team. From a sabermetrical standpoint it?s the worst thing you can do (while values vary from system to system one thing is certain, a GIDP is statistically far worse than a K, CS, FO, etc). Even from a non-statistical standpoint ...

More Talk About Trading Ichiro
2008-07-17 17:19:00 Seattle P-I’s Jim Moore is the latest local guy to write about the possibility of trading Ichiro Suzuki. Unfortunately for us, ESPN has seemingly picked up on it, meaning we may not hear the end of it. There are more pressing issues at hand, but would dealing Ichiro really be such a bad idea? Bad PR and ...
Ichiro Makes Catch Of Our Lifetimes
2008-05-27 07:19:00 In the 5th inning of last night’s Boston Red Sox versus Seattle Mariners game, Jason Varitek crushed a ball from Felix Hernandez to deep center field. Ichiro finally has a batting average
2008-03-14 11:42:00 You can breathe easy now, Mariners fans.Ichiro managed to get that elusive first hit of spring, ending an 0-for-21 drought. In typical Ichiro fashion, the ice breaker was a slow grounder to second base that he narrowly beat out at first. Ichiro is now batting a skimpy .043 for the spring, but at

2008-03-13 18:39:00 We’re a few weeks into Spring Training and Mariners outfielder, Ichiro Suzuki is without a hit. In seven games he’s 0-21 with an RBI. The interesting point about Ichiro’s hitless streak is that he doesn’t care. “To tell you the truth, some of this is kind of fun,” Ichiro said, speaking through translator Ken Barron. “To ...

Ichiro can't buy a hit
2008-03-09 17:32:00 Was perusing the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this morning and stumbled upon the fact that Ichiro Suzuki is 0-for-14 so far this spring. Fantasy owners probably aren't too worried about the perennial .300+ hitter, though, truth be told, it gives me another reason to feel good about staying away from him this year.Ichiro will turn 35 years old this fall, and I'm not sure how much longer you can expect a guaranteed 30+ stolen bases from him. (Last year, he only swiped 14 bags after the All-Star Break, including just one in September, and he was caught stealing three times as often in the second half.) I also don't expect him to post an average anywhere near the .351 he put up in '07. My guess he'll hit somewhere between his 2005 (.303) and 2006 (.322) totals. He's still a great source of run production and will net you between 50 and 60 RBIs, but I don't think he's worth taking with the 23rd overall pick, which is where, on average, Yahoo players are drafting him. That's ahead of ...

Ichiro Suzuki Ties Record With Another 200 Hit Season
2007-09-05 00:49:00 Another Baseball Record Is Threatened As Ichiro Makes Milestone Against Yankees:Ichiro Suzuki had three hits off Clemens to equal another record, Felix Hernandez pitched seven sharp innings and the Mariners beat the New York Yankees 7-1 Monday in the opener of a crucial series. Suzuki homered in the third inning to reach 200 hits for the seventh consecutive season, tying the AL mark. He also singled twice against Clemens to raise his career average against the right-hander to .217 (5-for-23). Seattle ended its season-worst nine-game losing streak and trimmed New York's wild-card lead to one game, winning for the first time since it beat Texas 4-2 on Aug. 24. "Two-hundred hits is always special for me, no matter what the situation," Suzuki said through a translator. "But I did have the plus also today of getting a win after nine consecutive losses and getting it off of Roger Clemens." The young right-hander easily got the better of the banged-up Clemens, who also has been bother...

Ichiro Ozawa
2007-07-23 06:06:00 ????Ichiro Ozawa, leader of Japan's main opposition party Minshuto (Democratic Party of Japan), has a real chance of guiding his party to victory over Shinzo Abe and the LDP in the upcoming elections for the House of Councillors on July 29.Indeeed, the wily 65-year-old Ozawa has staked his political future on the outcome - promising to retire from public life if his party fail to take an overall majority. This claim should be taken with some skepticism.Throughout his long and controversial political career as a central player in the perplexing world of Japanese politics over the last four decades, Ozawa has consistently changed tack when events have pushed the Keio University educated, Iwate native into a tight corner.Ozawa entered politics in the late 1960s, was elected to the Diet in 1969, becoming a member of the powerful Kakuei Tanaka faction.Ozawa has twice held key offices in LDP governments, first in 1985 as Home Affairs Minister under Yasuhiro Nakasone and in 1989 as LDP Se...

Ichiro Seems Likely To Stay
2007-07-10 16:48:00 Larry Stone of the Seattle Times describes how drastically the atmosphere has changed in Seattle over the last year, especially from Ichiro's point of view. Gone are the negative tree metaphors; the vibe is positive under John McLaren. Winning doesn't hurt either. Stone speculates that a contract extension could happen soon for Ichiro. He may not be a home run hitter, and he may not draw walks. But all the hits have led to a strong .379 career OBP. And he's hit enough triples and doubles to bring his career SLG to .439 despite averaging about ten home runs per year. Throw in premium center field defense and international appeal, and a four-year, $72MM extension sounds fair.

Hargrove Resignation Could Help Ms Retain Ichiro
2007-07-02 07:01:00 Today's surprising resignation by Mariners manager Mike Hargrove could have a major effect on our world. That is, the trade and signing world of MLBTR. Ken Rosenthal has a new video up at FOXSports discussing the Hargrove resignation. Rosenthal mentions the well-known fact that Ichiro did not have a great relationship with Hargrove. He speculates that the resignation could affect Ichiro's decision on whether to stay in Seattle after this season. Rosenthal adds that Ichiro likes new Mariners manager John McLaren. The bigger factor, though, has likely always been Ichiro's desire to play for a winning team. The Mariners, at a surprising 45-33, are just one game out of the Wild Card (trailing the Tigers). It's starting to look like there's a good chance the Mariners retain Ichiro. Which player would be shifted to right field, Ichiro or superprospect Adam Jones? By the way, if the season ended today, the playoff matchups would b...

Ichiro: No stolen bases this spring
2007-03-26 16:13:00 Mariners OF Ichiro Suzuki has yet to record a stolen base in 16 spring games. He was caught stealing in his lone attempt. He is, however, hitting .321 with eight runs, three doubles and six RBI. Don't worry about Ichiro's lack of steals this spring. The team just probably wants to save his legs for the season. It looks as though he will enter the season in the last year of his contract and that could be big for his performance as he will be playing for a new contract. Consider the Fantasy stud one of the top 15 outfielders to go off the board in the first four rounds in all leagues on Draft Day. It certainly helps he's motivated by being in a contract year.
