Healthy Breakfast: Pumpkin Idli (Dudhi Idli)
2008-03-27 20:18:00
I was introduced to the new concept of Pumpkin Idli only after my wedding. My mother-in-law had prepared it early in the morning for breakfast and I had it with some ghee. Suffice to say that the taste was totally out of this world and I became a big fan of it ever since. It has a sweetish taste because of the pumpkin but when combined with salt, coconut and green chillies, the Idli imparts totally unique flavor.  Pumpkin is chock full of goodness. Not only is pumpkin loaded with Vitamin A and antioxidant carotenoids, particularly alpha and beta-carotenes, it’s a good source of Vitamins C, K, and E, and lots of minerals, including magnesium, potassium, and iron. This along wit some fruits, orange juice/ milk/yogurt can serve as a well balanced breakfast and keep us going through out the day.  This is my entry to Balanced Breakfast WBB#20 hosted by the wonderful and talented Mansi. Ingredients 2 cups grated pumpkin 3/4 cup of idli rava (not the upma rav, adjust according t...

Moong Curry and Cucumber Idli (Mooga Ghashi & Tausha Idli )
2007-11-28 13:59:00
Time and tide waits for none says a 14th century adage and I am sure most of us could not agree with it more. Days fly by at the blink of the eye and even before we realize it months and years have passed by and all that is left behind are memories. Some of them good and warm ones that we like to cherish and some not-so-good ones that we like to forget. There are so many ways of evoking those memories like food, people, places, special days etc but I personally feel that food is the strong catalyst of all. Food is a part and parcel of our everyday lives and more so when there are festivals, get togethers, parties etc and there are bound to be lots of memories associated with it. I instantly go down the memory lane especially while making special festival meals, traditional meals etc and cannot help but recall the experience of joy, family, food, excitement felt during festivals. “Mooga Ghashi” along with “Khotte” (idli steamed in jackfruit leaves) is a quintessential part o...

Idli
2007-06-06 02:55:00
After I passed out of Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya in 96 and my visits to Bajirao Rd were limited to the telephone exchange. There are a number of things I miss about my old college neighbourhood. Places like Saras Baug, Hindustan Bakery and most of all Wadeshwar. On Bajirao Road right opposite the telephone exchange there is a small place called that sells the most delicious idlis you'll ever eat. You wouldn't come across it unless you knew of it as the actual place is on the first floor, almost 10 metres above the footpath. 90% of Wadeshwar's business comes from Idli-Sambar. Two hot idlis in a bowl with a generous helping of Sambar that came out of a tap. And back then it was all at a very reasonable price or 2 Rupees making it a highly sought after destination for cheap bastards like yours truly. It was also a great place to sketch as some really interesting, senior gentry from the ‘old city’ frequented the place. Really the sketching wasn't as interesting as watching feeb...
Jackfruit Idli with Mango Chuteny
2007-05-07 20:17:00
Jackfruit? There is something about jackfruit which fascinates me all the time. The huge spiky hard exterior which contains sweet golden yellow sheaths has always been one of my favorite fruits. I remember the days when my sister, brother and myself would always find some reason to stay away from volunteering to pare and seed the jackfruit. Once the sticky glue was removed and the golden flesh is separated, we kids would happily go and sit cross legged on the floor next to the big cane basket which would be filled with sweet jackfruits and happily eat one after the other. Amma would sit there peeling sheaths of fruit and tell us her childhood memories where she with her sisters and brothers and some dozens of cousins would gather and have fun while peeling jackfruit from its sticky sheaths and burn the jackfruit seeds in open fire. Although I am lucky to have many cousins, it is no where close to what my parents have. I can very well imagine the fun my parents had while growing up w...
Wal-Mart?s Midlife Crisis
2007-04-21 06:40:00
If Wal-Mart seems short of answers at the moment, it might well be because there aren’t any good ones. Increasingly, it appears that America’s largest corporation has steered itself into a slow-growth cul de sac from which there is no escape. “There are a lot of issues here, but what they add up to is ...

The Gift of Letting Go In Midlife
2007-04-07 17:04:00
There is a very big gift waiting on the other end of learning how to let go when we reach middle age. The gift is an abundance of energy. In midlife, we begin to see how precious energy is and how without it, nothing else really matters. After all, who cares if you are able to amass a large sum of money if you don't have the energy to enjoy it? Who cares if you are blessed with beautiful grandchildren if you don't have the energy to get down on your hands and knees and play with them? Who cares if you live to be a hundred if your life is dull and boring?I believe that everything is made of energy....everything. At its most primal level, everything IS energy. Even money is energy! In fact, my concept of God/ess, great mystery, spirit is Energy. I've said for a long time that God is a verb and not a noun. As human beings we are made of life force energy and are constantly being infused with it. What we do with that energy is completely up to us. We are totally in charge of it and b...

How to find cheap auto insurance - guidlines and tips
2007-02-11 05:58:02
Author: David Hunter Article: If you are a resident of the United Kingdom and drive a car, then you certainly have to buy auto insurance policy, because no one is allowed to drive a car in Britain without having his car insured. For someone auto insurance might seem an awesome burden, and they hate paying money for it having no other choice. However, there are some ways to reduce car insurance costs and some of us really need to know about these insurance tricks. Before going further we have to mention that cheapest car insurance is not the best car insurance. You should always bear in mind it. When selecting an insurer, try to find out more about the company, its history and credentials. Ask your friends and relatives about it, may be they can suggest you something you are not aware of. Make a thorough research, which most likely will take several days to complete. But where are you supposed to get started with the research? The bets place to look in is the Internet. ...
Idli-Vada-Sambar
2007-01-28 20:40:01
At last?. It?s a time for the Queen of South Indian breakfast dish: Idli-Vada with Sambar. I call it a queen because for me King means Dosa. This Sunday we had Idli-Vada for breakfast. My hubby and my dad are big fans I have ever seen when it comes to Idli-Vada. The steaming fluffy and soft Idlis with little spicy and tasty Vadas dipped in delicious Sambar? Awww?. Nothing is better than that. I won?t talk a lot about it because I have got to post 3 recipes here in single post:). So talk less and work more is the theme here;) Here we go? Idli-Vada-SambarRecipe for Idli:Ingredients:2 cups of Rice1 cup Urad DalSalt to taste Soft and Fluffy IdlisMethod:Soak rice and urad dal separately in water for 2-3 hours.First grind the urad dal to smooth paste. If you are a South Indian then one thing which will always follow you everywhere is Idli-Sambar. Be it a small hotel or gaadiwala or some ?sagar? hotels, the white, soft and fluffy Idli?s with big bowl of mouth watering Sambar and Coconut Chutney will take your breath away. Here I?m posting a recipe another version of idli called Rava Idlis. Your Midlife Crisis War Unfolds
2006-12-26 07:02:01
And don't you want it? I do. I want an end to: - American imperialism because we're not doing it right. - cracked heels. But that's another post. - death, death, and more death. - separated families. - wars for oil. - incompetence. - mismanagement. And to all a good night.
MALLIGE IDLI
2006-12-11 03:20:00
y in-laws are from Mysore and every time I visit India during November - December time MIL would take me to the Dasara Exhibition. We used to shop and shop; after which we made a point not to miss a single food stall in there :) . Wow! Food in India is the second thing that I miss the most after my family I guess. OK now coming to food, we used to order something called "Mallige Idli" there (Mallige means Jasmine flower in Kannada - thus relates 'coz of its extra smoothness and softness). They are so soft that they would just melt in my mouth, & I always wondered if there was a secret behind this. My Idlis do come out good but not as soft, extra fluffy and smooth as those mallige idlis from the stalls. I kept trying and trying and never gave up; finally woo hoo I got the secret way yesterday. My Idlis came out fantastic, so very similar to the Mysore Mallige Idlis; although it still can't beat those mallige idlis from the gaadi ;). These idlis with authentic spicy hot sambar - you...
Meals from Leftovers :3 Idli Upma
2006-12-06 21:10:02
Idli Upma, originally uploaded by Anupama 72.Continuing with my Meals from Leftovers series this is one of my favourites. Idlis are a firm favourite in my house, so it is very rare that they are leftover. Normally there is a tussle between the three of us as to who will get the last idli. So I was particularly thriled yesterday when I saw that 6 idlis were left untouched .I always make this deliciously spicy upma from the leftover idlis. To make this I used :6 idlis crumbled coursely (one day old), 1tspn mustard seeds, 1 pinch asafoetida, 2 dry red chillies, 2 tspn urad dal, 3 to 4 fresh curry leaves, 3 tspn oil, 1/2 tspn sugar, salt to taste, 1 tspn lemon juice (optional), corainder to garnish.Heat the oil in a pan add the mustard seeds. When they begin to splutter, add the asafoetida, the urad dal, the curry leaves and the red chillies. Fry all this for a few seconds tiil the urad dal turns golden. Add to this the crumbled idlis, salt, sugar and lemon juice. Toss it all well. Garn...
Is it really a midlife crisis?
2006-12-02 16:12:07
With the aging of the baby boom generation, about 2 million U.S. women a year are now entering menopause, which signals the end of their reproductive life. That's about 180,000 women a month, or about 6,000 a day. The shutdown of all those ovaries leads to some major hormonal shifts that have been blamed for everything from dry skin to mental illness. (It also leads to a multibillion-dollar trade in prescription medications, over-the-counter remedies, how-to publications, designer fans and lines of loose-fitting or perspiration-wicking clothing, among other commodities.)
