I can't shake off Embarrassing Illnesses
2008-05-06 17:38:00
I mentioned on Friday that last week was the most popular in the blog's history for an 'embarrassing' reason. Here's why.Back in January one of our regular contributors emailed us about an advert she had spotted on her work intranet regarding an upcoming Channel 4 TV show called 'Embarrassing Illnesses'. I then wrote about this on the blog – and as well as mocking the central premise of the show, I also pointed out that the intranet advert at one point spelt the word 'embarrassing' with one 'r'. As I wrote at the time, everyone makes spelling mistakes, but come on – the word 'embarrassing' was in the name of the show...So far, so ordinary. But on Monday last week, Channel 4 aired the first episode in the series (now going by the title 'Embarrassing Bodies') and the blog started receiving hundreds of hits from people Googling 'embarassing illnesses channel 4'. Note the single 'r'.How ironic – by blogging about misspellings I attract people to the blog who can...

2008-04-19 10:46:00
Company insists its food is '100% safe' A worrisome health trend among dogs and cats across the country has surfaced in the past few months. Scores of pets from California to South Carolina have experienced sudden and recurring bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, and other digestive problems.Through an examination of reports submitted by readers, ConsumerAffairs.com has uncovered a common link among these pets: They all ate the same brand of food: NUTRO pet food.In all of the cases we've examined, the animals' conditions improved once their owners switched them to another brand of food."I've been feeding my chocolate Lab, Indy, NUTRO for almost four years," said Laura F. of Las Vegas, Nevada. "He's always been happy, healthy, and big. Recently I switched him to NUTRO (Natural Choice) Lite at my vet's request. Three weeks ago, he started vomiting uncontrollably."Laura said her veterinarian initially thought Indy had pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. The vet prescribed so...

Mental illnesses are biological brain disorders that many people suffer from, through no fault of their own. They cannot be wished away or combated through will power. Lingering Illnesses

13 things that testify to the fact that you have had illness in your home for the last 6 weeks. You are popping Vitamin C like candy. You have considered buying stock in Motrin and Tylenol. You wonder if you will see the day when you wear something other than pajamas. You new perfume smells strangely like Lysol. You are more familiar with your bathroom than you would care to admit. You begin to come face to face with the fact that even with an empty bladder you can cough and sneeze hard enough to wet your pants.Even though it makes a great drawer or trunk liner you wonder why God EVER saw fit to create cedar. (severe allergies)Your children cry at the site of the nebulizer. (breathing treatments)Mom and baby make a perfect fit; baby has a high fever and mom has the chills, so mom cools baby with cold hands and baby warms mom up.If you ask where did your fever go the answer is higher and higher. You have a funny crick in your neck from holding your head at an angle to allow for your ear to...

I continued Carl Jung’s research of dream interpretation and discovered the anti- conscience, which Jung believed to be a part of the unconscious. illnesses HUA HIN
2007-11-20 18:43:00
It must be stressed that this section has not been compiled by doctors. It is meant as a guide only to some of the more common health problems you may encounter in Hua Hin.Should you be unfortunate to be stricken by one, you must seek proper, qualified medical advice. We have indicated some remedies for the less serious afflictions, but have purposely not attempted to advise on more serious conditions. Nevertheless, this page will hopefully make you aware of what can happen to you health-wise in Hua Hin.Disease and illness Water and food-borne diseasesThe simple rules are don't drink the tap water and be careful of ice. Although tap water is cleaner in Hua Hin than in other areas of Thailand, it's not worth the risk to drink it as bottled water is so cheap. Likewise, ice can be contaminated, but you'll not have trouble with it in restaurants or bars and when you buy it for home make sure it is correctly packaged. Again, it is cheap. Food is almost always clean and fresh, so you'...

Epidemic of illnesses related to food and the digestive tract prompts Food
2007-09-24 03:43:00
Are you dealing with frustration, anger or disbelief about delays in diagnosis or lack of belief of the role of food in illness or health?Daily I hear stories of frustration, anger, or disbelief about the lack of understanding or appreciation of the role of food and the gut in health. In the Celiac community and literature delays of diagnosis of Celiac disease in adults are known to average between eleven and thirteen years. Many children have diagnoses delayed for years and some are missed completely until after adolescence when additional growth is not possible or in early adulthood when inability to get pregnant or multiple miscarriages have already occurred. The epidemic of chronic illnesses linked to food and the gut remain unrecognized. Many other people suffer from chronic fatigue, gas and bloating, joint aches, mental fogginess or onset of irreversible autoimmune diseases. Many people just feel poorly and don’t know why. Some believe they found a link between food and their...

The "Rodney Dangerfield" of illnesses; chronic fatigue syndrome is now wide
2007-07-19 00:47:00
It was like the "Rodney Dangerfield" of illnesses. It got no respect at all. But finally chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is recognized by the both the medical community and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a serious illness. CFS is also widely associated with depression.“People with C.F.S. are as sick and as functionally impaired as someone with AIDS,  with breast cancer, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” said Dr. William Reeves, the lead expert on the illness at the C.D.C., who helped expose the centers’ misuse of chronic fatigue financing. The New York Times reported yesterday that studies have shown that people with the syndrome experience abnormalities in the central and autonomic nervous systems, the immune system, cognitive functions, the stress response pathways and other major biological functions. Researchers believe the illness will ultimately prove to have multiple causes, including genetic predisposition,...
Uninsured Adults With Chronic Illnesses Use More Health Care Services When
2007-07-18 13:30:00
Uninsured adults with common chronic illnesses had greater health expenditures and more frequent physician office visits and hospitalizations after they became eligible for Medicare compared with those who had insurance before age 65, according to a study published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine, Reuters reports. For the study, researchers from Harvard Medical School used data from the federal Health and Retirement Study to compare Medicare expenses for 1,385 people who were uninsured before becoming eligible for the program at age 65 and 3,773 who had private coverage before becoming eligible for Medicare (Emery, Reuters, 7/11).According to the study, 2,951 beneficiaries were diagnosed with either cardiovascular disease or diabetes -- conditions for which treatment can prevent severe consequences that can require extra doctor visits and hospitalization. Health care expenses were 51% greater for previously uninsured beneficiaries who were diagnosed with chronic cond...

Warm Weather Dinings Mean Foodborne Illnesses
2007-07-13 11:07:00
Foodborne IllnessesNassau County Department of Health reminds residents that in the hot weather, food is more susceptible to spoilage.Temperature and time, as well as personal hygiene, are critical factors that can lead to foodborne diseases. The following are some recommendations to help prevent foodborne diseases: * When storing or transporting food, kept the food's temperature below 40 F. or above 140 F. * When preparing poultry, pork or beef, make certain it is cooked until the juices run clear. The best way to check that cooked foods are safe to eat, including those foods cooked on a barbecue, is to measure their internal cooking temperature with a chef's type of stem thermometer. Poultry should reach 165 F. on the thermometer; ground beef should reach 158 F.; pork should reach 150 F.; solid cuts of meat or fish should reach 140 F. * No cooked food, or foods which are ready to eat (salads, sandwiches, etc.) should ever come in contact with a plate, cutting board or ...

Common Childhood Illnesses…
2007-06-08 06:29:00
Children are very susceptible to illnesses, in part because their immune systems are not fully mature. Breastfeeding of course provides some immunity to common illnesses, but nowadays most children are weaned by the time they are 1 year old. Children also have a habit of exploring the world around them with their mouths and their hands. Anything that comes into contact with their mouth and hands can potentially cause an illness. The good news is that the more your child is exposed the stronger their immune systems will become, and their ability to fight off infection in the future. Some of the most common childhood illnesses and symptoms to be on the look out are listed below: Colds/Cough – Cold and coughs are usually caused by viral infections, thus must be spread by person to person contact, not through the weather alone. Common symptoms of a cold include a stuffy nose, cough, possible sore throat and occasionally a temperature. Colds can become more severe and result in bro...

Ground Zero Illnesses Clouding Giuliani?s Legacy
2007-05-14 18:26:00
Anyone who watched Rudolph W. Giuliani preside over ground zero in the days after 9/11 glimpsed elements of his strength: decisiveness, determination, self-confidence. Those qualities were also on display over the months he directed the cleanup of the collapsed World Trade Center. But today, with evidence that thousands of people who worked at ground zero have ...

Google Used by Doctors to Diagnose Illnesses
2006-11-13 16:39:04
Researchers found that almost 6 in 10 difficult cases can be solved by using the Google as a diagnostic aid. A team at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane identified 26 difficult diagnostic cases published in the New England Journal of Medicine last year. They selected three to five search terms from each case and did a Google search while blind to the correct diagnoses. Google searches found the correct diagnosis in 58 % of cases. Do Other Illnesses Co-occur with Bipolar Disorder?
1970-01-01 00:59:00
Alcohol and drug abuse are very common among people with bipolar disorder. Research findings suggest that many factors may contribute to these substance abuse problems, including self-medication of symptoms, mood symptoms either brought on or perpetuated by substance abuse, and risk factors that may influence the occurrence of both bipolar disorder and substance use disorders. Treatment for co-occurring substance abuse, when present, is an important part of the overall treatment plan.
