Masterworks of 20th Century Russian Literature and Illustration New York Au
2008-05-13 18:06:00 Bloomsbury Auctions New York is delighted to bring to the market an extraordinary collection of early 20th Century Russian Literature, autographs, photographs and associated illustration art from 1900 through to 1950, beginning with pieces from the 'Silver Age' through the Revolutionary and post Revolutionary periods through to the Stalin era. This wide ranging collection shows how the word in the novel and in poetry alongside the art of the illustrator became one of the few ways of expressing oneself in an ever more tightly controlled society. It is an unprecedented collection of rare and desirable association material from the major Russian authors and artists of this tumultuous period of history.

McBess 3D and 2D Talent
2008-04-30 11:20:00 His illustrative work may seem to give off a slightly vintage whiff, but I think he puts just enough contemporary elements to make you feel like it's a completely new style. His 3D animation is damn fine and looks 100% professional too making this one of my new fave all-rounded artists from the last couple years. Apparently, he also has some music which will be released in a couple months and I'm really looking forward to that. Visit his entertaining website HERE.The video is definitely worth a watch. A 2 minute visual portfolio of his 3D work...stunning!You can read an interview with him HERE.

Vector Illustration - Glory days
2008-03-29 06:22:00 [ Download | 1024x768 ]Hmm..this is the very first time I designing something like this. I know its not looking very good though. I visited a lot of design blog/website everyday and see their artworks including these funky design. I told to myself -> Ohh..that was really easy. But when I'm trying to design it by myself, my head start spinning in the air. Yes, it quite hard if you're a newbie like me. You've to consider a lot of things - elements to use, colors, shapes, placement, typography, theme and so on..So in this illustration, I've use the sunburst shape as the background and the purplish colors as well. Maybe in the next tutorial section I will tell you how do I created the sunburst effect. So don't forget to get a free updates via my blog feed or email. Secret Wars Series 2 Grand Final
2008-03-11 21:18:00 I was nervous. It was the first time Cafe 1001 had hosted an event like Secret Wars and I was really worried that our regular punters wouldn't show. Fuck that. It was one in, one out by 10pm on a Friday night! The place was heaving and heads from all over came down to witness the live illustration event of the year. It was a really debated Final with loads of drama in the days to follow.....Secret Wars Rules: 90 mins on the clock. Black pens only. Freestyle (no sketches). Go big or go home. The winner is decided by two judges and the third vote uses a crowd decibel reader to see which artist is cheered for more. I was unlucky enough to be one of the judges who would decide which artist would win a thousand quid. Yes, that's right 1,000 GBP for the winner!!!!!!The following is a summary about what happened on that freaky Friday 29th Feb at the Secret Wars Series 2 Grand Final....Illustrator WEN was on the left and Graffiti Artist ODISY on the right hand panel. Both pieces were full...

Front-Loaded Penguins
2008-03-10 00:23:00 Woke up around 9 this morning and instantly remembered why I hate "Springing Forward". Of course, in two weeks I won't even be able to tell the difference. It was cold today, and windy, let's just say Don Quixote would've had his hands full. Luckily, I had a nice hat. Nothing showy, but comfortable.I'm not crazy about brimmed hats anymore. I don't think the whole brim fad will last much longer anyway.Typography has been interesting me lately. I'll never do the actual work involved in creating a usable font, I don't have the patience for it, but I like the idea of using it in my illustrations.Earth tones are really speaking to me lately. I've always loved them in general, but I'm really going to start limiting my palette to them. I'm not talking style change; well, I guess I am. Just a color change. Skin tones too.Question of the day: Why does Mrs. Honeybrow always steal my newspaper?

Adam Haynes
2008-03-07 12:20:00 Adam Haynes has been illustrating for Nike 6.0 (their extreme sports label) for a couple years now and I think he rocks. His illustrations are so rich in detail, yet aren't necessarily made up of clean, straight lines. I first saw his work in a copy of Ride BMX magazine and loved his "rider's perspective", standing on the top of a massive drop off, waiting to just jump or roll into that huge transfer etc. This dude has a really bright future in the illustration game. Thanks to UKAdapta for the heads up.Check more of Adam's work HERE.

Jesus Christ Superhero?!
2008-02-23 21:09:00 It’s true that we all need a superhero because it’s just in our subconscious that we all need a Savior. That’s why comics like Superman, Spider-man (my childhood favorite) and even Wonder Woman, with their celluloid enactments pull in so many millions both at comic stores and at the box-office. But to put the Lord Jesus ...

Illustration Tuesday
2008-02-19 04:52:00 I haven't drawn illustrations for quite some time due to the absence of clients. Magazines and newspapers nowadays don't need freelance illustrators as they used to. Fortunately, a weekly horror magazine, which has been using my illustrations for quite a long time e-mailed me just a few days ago and asked for a few drawings. I sent them five and they accepted three of the works. The illustration you see included in the post is one of the two drawings rejected. I feel a bit disappointed because it is my favorite among the bunch I sent. But then it probably wasn't what the magazine needs so its fine. A very good lesson can be derived from this rejection regarding freelance illustrators submitting sample illustrations to magazines and newspapers for that matter. The lesson is:"submit only those works that the magazine or the newspaper needs". Your artwork maybe perfect, beautiful and well-polished technically but it's not what the magazine needs. So there's a big chance your illus...

The Assassination of Sense
2008-02-17 22:11:00 Here's the beginnings of a new project. Right now, let's just call it Big Head. The top of the head will be rounded out more. However, as in most of my work, the beard/hair are intentionally placed oddly.I just saw this today, and it really was great. You have to be invested in watching it, what with the 160 minute running time, but I thought it was well worth it.This is one of my favorite shots in the film. Using the doorway as a frame is nothing new, but I always like it when it's used. This is the finished product from the piece I showed. I ended up calling it Then, Things Got Interesting. If it goes up for voting at DBH, I'll make sure to post a link.Have a good one.----------------Now playing: The Who - Baba O'Rileyvia FoxyTunes

Illustration Friday - Choose
2008-02-09 15:39:00 This is a repost from last year that I thought was appropriate for this week Illustration Friday Entry. I have added a video process of how I painted it as well. Another demo I did for my class. Conceptual landscape watercolor illustrating 1 of four words. I chose the word choice in dealing with the choice of quitting to smoke is a personal decision that know one can make for you. So my idea is to show a super close up of a ugly ashtray. On a cigarette stands a teen on the tip of a cig like he “walking the plank” to his doom. He has made the choice to walk away. Outside on the ground is himself there to help him get through it because in the end it’s your choice and yourself that gets you through it. I am imagining what this might be like not from personal standpoint with smoking, but from other life challenges being strictly a personal decision and no one else’s.
